Chapter 7: The Hidden Room

The bedroom door slammed hard enough to shake the frame.

“Sarah!””

Adrian grabbed the handle and twisted.

Locked.

“Open the door!””

No answer.

He stepped back and drove his shoulder into it.

The wood cracked.

Claire reached the top of the stairs behind him.

“Adrian!””

“Stay back.””

“You need help.””

He hit the door again.

The lock splintered.

The door flew inward.

The room was dark.

Mia’s toys were scattered across the floor, but there was no one standing inside.

Adrian froze.

“Sarah?””

Claire switched on her phone light.

Empty.

The bed was untouched.

The window was shut.

The closet door was open.

Adrian rushed inside.

“Sarah!””

Nothing.

Then Mia, still downstairs with Daniel, screamed.

“Daddy!””

Adrian spun around.

He ran back to the hallway.

Daniel was standing at the bottom of the stairs, staring toward the kitchen.

Vanessa was gone.

Claire noticed first.

“Where is she?””

Daniel looked confused.

“She was right here.””

Adrian looked around.

The front door was still closed.

The windows were locked.

Then they heard it.

A metallic click.

From inside the kitchen.

Adrian moved quickly.

Claire followed.

Daniel came behind them.

When they entered, they found Vanessa standing beside the counter.

She was holding something in her hand.

A key.

Adrian stopped.

“What is that?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Her face was wet with tears.

“I can explain.””

Claire shook her head.

“You've said that too many times.””

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

“I found this in the basement.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What key?””

Vanessa held it up.

“An old brass key.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does it open?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don't know.””

Daniel immediately said, “Give it to me.””

She pulled it away.

“Why?””

“Because I know what it is.””

Adrian looked at his brother.

“Tell me.””

Daniel stared at the key.

“It belonged to Dad.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

Their father had been dead for eight years.

“What does that have to do with Mia?””

“Nothing.””

Claire looked at him.

“Then why are you scared?””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Because that key opens something you don't know exists.””

Adrian stared.

“What?””

“A room.””

“Where?””

Daniel said nothing.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

“Behind the garage.””

Claire frowned.

“There’s no room behind the garage.””

“There is.””

“How?””

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Your father built it.””

Adrian felt a chill move through him.

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

“You knew about this?””

“I knew there was a space.””

“You never told me.””

“I thought it was sealed.””

Vanessa looked at the key.

“It isn't.””

Adrian took a breath.

“Show me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not with Mia here.””

Mia was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

She looked exhausted.

“Daddy?””

Adrian immediately turned.

“Stay with Claire.””

“But—”

“Please.””

Mia nodded.

Claire put an arm around her.

Adrian, Daniel, and Vanessa walked toward the back door.

The garage sat detached from the house.

Rain tapped against the windows.

The yard was almost completely dark.

Daniel walked around the side of the garage and stopped beside a stack of old garden equipment.

He moved a wooden panel.

Behind it was a narrow metal door.

Adrian stared.

“I've lived here for eight years.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“You knew this was here.””

“Yes.””

“Why did you keep it from me?””

Daniel looked at the lock.

“Because Dad told me never to open it.””

Claire stood a few feet behind them.

“Your father said that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the key in Vanessa’s hand.

“He said what was inside wasn't meant for us.””

Adrian reached for the key.

Vanessa gave it to him.

He inserted it into the lock.

The mechanism clicked.

The door opened with a deep metallic groan.

A smell of dust and damp concrete drifted out.

Adrian raised his flashlight.

The narrow passage led into a hidden room.

Shelves covered the walls.

Old boxes filled the corners.

A desk sat beneath a single hanging lamp.

And on the desk was a stack of photographs.

Adrian walked inside.

The first photograph showed Mia as a baby.

The second showed her at two.

Then three.

Four.

Five.

His skin prickled.

“These aren't family photos.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?””

Adrian picked up another.

Mia was standing outside the house.

She was wearing a red coat.

The date was printed on the bottom.

Three years ago.

“She wasn't supposed to be alone that day.””

Daniel looked at the photo.

“Who took it?””

Adrian turned another one over.

Nothing.

Then Claire picked up an envelope.

“There's a name on this.””

Adrian looked.

*S. MORGAN*

His heart stopped.

“Sarah.””

He opened it.

Inside was a single handwritten page.

Claire read over his shoulder.

*Adrian,*

*If you found this room, then you already know the truth has been hidden longer than I wanted.*

His hands began shaking.

*I didn't build this room. Your father did. But after his death, I discovered what he kept here.*

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Your father?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

Sarah's letter continued.

*He was keeping records. Not of money. Of people.*

Claire looked around the room.

“People?””

Adrian continued reading.

**Names. Dates. Photographs. Conversations.

Every time someone entered this property. Every time Mia was left alone. Every time someone approached her room.**

Daniel went pale.

“No.””

Adrian turned to him.

“You knew.””

“I knew Dad kept records.””

“You never told me.””

“I didn't know what they were for.””

Claire looked through the drawers.

“There's more.””

She found a small notebook.

The cover was worn.

Inside were handwritten dates.

Adrian read the first page.

*April 14 — Vanessa visited. Stayed 47 minutes.*

He looked at Vanessa.

She stepped backward.

“That's impossible.””

Claire turned the page.

*April 22 — Daniel arrived after midnight.*

Daniel stared.

“I wasn't here that night.””

The next page.

*May 3 — Sarah questioned Adrian.*

Then another.

*May 11 — Mia cried outside bedroom door.*

Adrian's breathing stopped.

Another page.

*May 12 — Unknown male observed near upstairs window. Black watch.*

Claire slowly looked up.

“The shadow.””

Adrian kept reading.

*May 18 — Unknown male entered house while Adrian was away.*

He turned the page.

*May 18 — Mia saw him.*

Then the handwriting changed.

The next line was written darker.

*He knows she saw him.*

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa whispered, “Who wrote this?””

Adrian looked at the handwriting.

“Dad.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He was dead before Mia was born.””

Adrian looked up sharply.

“Then explain that.””

Daniel couldn't.

Claire opened another drawer.

Inside was a digital recorder.

She lifted it carefully.

“There are recordings.””

Adrian pressed the power button.

Static crackled.

Then an older man's voice filled the room.

His father.

“I don't trust him.””

Adrian froze.

The recording continued.

“He says he's protecting the family, but he's watching the child.””

Daniel whispered, “Dad…”

The recording crackled again.

“I told Sarah to keep Mia away from him.””

Adrian leaned closer.

The voice continued.

“He has access to everything.””

A click.

Then silence.

Claire pressed play again.

Another recording.

Same voice.

This time weaker.

“If anything happens to me, the key goes to Daniel. But the files must go to Adrian.””

Daniel stared.

“They were talking about us.””

Adrian looked at his brother.

“Who is 'he'?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.””

The recorder clicked.

One final recording played.

A door creaked in the background.

Then Adrian heard his father's voice whisper:

“He's here.””

A pause.

Then another man's voice answered.

“Then you should have kept quiet.””

The recording ended.

Mia screamed from outside.

Adrian dropped the recorder.

He ran.

Claire followed.

They reached the yard.

Mia was standing beside the garage door, pointing toward the house.

“Daddy!””

Adrian looked.

A figure stood upstairs behind the window.

A man.

Watching them.

The room was dark behind him.

But one thing was clearly visible.

A black watch.

Adrian shouted.

“Hey!””

The figure moved.

Adrian sprinted toward the house.

By the time he reached the back door, the figure had disappeared.

Claire ran upstairs.

Nothing.

The window was still closed.

Adrian entered Mia’s bedroom.

Empty.

He spun around.

“Mia?””

Claire stared at him.

“She was just with me.””

Adrian's blood ran cold.

He ran downstairs.

“Mia!””

No answer.

Daniel came through the front door.

“What happened?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Mia is gone.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Vanessa appeared behind him.

Her face drained of color.

Then a phone rang.

Not Adrian’s.

Not Claire’s.

Vanessa reached into her pocket.

She looked at the screen.

And stopped breathing.

Adrian saw the caller ID.

*UNKNOWN.*

Vanessa answered with trembling hands.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through.

“Tell Adrian to come alone.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“Where?””

The voice replied:

“The place where his daughter first saw me.””

The call ended.

Adrian took one step toward her.

“Where is that?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered:

May you like

“Mia’s old school.””

And from upstairs, Adrian heard the unmistakable sound of a bedroom window opening.
