Chapter 4: The Secret in the Hallway

For several seconds after the screen went black, nobody moved.

The video had ended.

But the silence it left behind felt heavier than anything they had watched.

Mia held tightly onto Adrian’s hand.

“Daddy…”

He looked down at her.

“What?””

“Was Mommy scared?””

The question broke something inside him.

Adrian looked back at the phone.

At the frozen black screen.

At the proof that Sarah had been hiding something.

“I don’t know,” he whispered.

And that was the truth.

For the first time in years, Adrian realized how little he knew about the things happening around him.

The people he trusted.

The conversations he missed.

The moments he never saw.

Claire watched Vanessa carefully.

Unlike before, Vanessa was no longer trying to look confident.

She looked exhausted.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.

Adrian stepped toward her.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes lifted.

“You really want to know?””

“Yes.””

“Even if it changes everything?””

Adrian looked at Mia.

Then back at her.

“It already has.””

The guests remained frozen around the room.

Nobody knew whether they should leave.

Nobody wanted to.

Everyone had just watched a family fall apart in real time.

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

Then toward the staircase.

Finally, she sat down on the edge of a chair.

The woman who had entered the party with perfect makeup and perfect confidence now looked completely different.

“I didn't plan any of this,” she said quietly.

Claire crossed her arms.

“That's not an answer.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You think I'm the villain.””

“I think Mia deserves the truth.””

Vanessa looked away.

“She does.””

Adrian’s voice was firm.

“Start talking.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Sarah came home because she found something.””

“What?””

“A message.””

“From who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“From who?””

“Me.””

The room went silent again.

Mia looked confused.

“You sent Mommy a message?””

Vanessa looked at the little girl.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Because I wanted to talk to her.””

“About what?””

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“About you.””

Adrian frowned.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Claire stepped forward.

“What were you saying about Adrian?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I told Sarah she needed to stop pretending everything was okay.””

Adrian stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your marriage was falling apart.””

Nobody spoke.

Mia looked between the adults.

“Mommy and Daddy were fighting?””

Adrian immediately knelt beside her.

“Mia—”

But Vanessa continued.

“She knew.””

Adrian stood again.

“Don't bring Mia into this.””

“I’m not trying to hurt her.””

“Then stop.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She deserves to know that adults have problems too.””

Claire shook her head.

“Not like this.””

Vanessa looked at the phone.

“Sarah and I had an argument.””

“About what?””

“About leaving.””

Adrian froze.

“Leaving what?””

“Leaving you.””

The words landed like a slap.

Mia’s face changed.

“Mommy was leaving?””

Adrian quickly turned.

“No.””

But he didn't know if he was telling Mia or himself.

Vanessa saw his reaction.

“She was thinking about taking Mia and moving away.””

Claire stared.

“Is that true?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

And that scared him more than anything.

Vanessa continued.

“She found out things weren't what she thought.””

“What things?”” Adrian asked.

“You tell me.””

His expression hardened.

“I’m asking you.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Sarah thought you were hiding something.””

“What?””

“She thought you were protecting someone.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

Adrian’s face changed slightly.

“Who?””

Vanessa stayed quiet.

Claire noticed.

“You know.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“You do.””

“I know what Sarah believed.””

“And what did she believe?””

Vanessa looked directly at Adrian.

“She believed you knew about Mia.””

Adrian frowned.

“About Mia?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She believed someone had been hurting her.””

The room went completely still.

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa looked toward Mia.

Then away.

“She thought you knew.””

Mia hugged herself.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You're accusing me now?””

“No.””

“It sounds like you are.””

“I’m saying Sarah was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“Of what would happen if she told you.””

Claire watched Adrian carefully.

He looked devastated.

Not angry.

Just confused.

“What did Sarah tell you?””

Vanessa looked down at her hands.

“She said Mia kept drawing the same picture.””

“What picture?””

“A little girl standing alone.””

Mia’s eyes widened.

“I drew that?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Then Mia whispered:

“I drew it because I was waiting.””

Adrian turned.

“Waiting for what?””

Mia looked at the floor.

“For someone to come.””

Claire’s expression softened.

“Mia…”

The little girl squeezed Adrian’s hand.

“I thought if I drew it, someone would understand.””

Adrian’s face broke.

He crouched down.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Mia looked at him.

“I tried.””

The words hurt more than anything else.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time, even she seemed uncomfortable.

Claire spoke quietly.

“Adrian, what happened before today?””

He looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“You said you didn't know.””

“I didn’t.””

“But Mia tried to tell you something.””

He looked at his daughter.

His mind raced.

The little moments he had ignored.

The times she became quiet when Vanessa entered.

The times she asked if he would be home.

The times he thought she was just being emotional.

He remembered.

And he hated himself for not seeing it.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“I never wanted her hurt.””

Everyone looked at her.

Claire laughed softly.

“You ruined her birthday dress.””

“I know.””

“You made people question her.””

“I know.””

“You scared her.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Because I was angry.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

Adrian stared at her.

“At Mia?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Vanessa looked at Sarah’s video still on the phone.

“At Sarah.””

“Why?””

“Because she always thought she was better than me.””

Claire frowned.

“That’s your reason?””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“I was tired of being invisible.””

Nobody expected that answer.

She continued.

“Sarah was always the perfect mother. The perfect wife. The person everyone trusted.””

Adrian shook his head.

“This was never a competition.””

“It was to me.””

“Vanessa…”

“I watched her get everything.””

Claire stepped closer.

“And you decided to hurt her child?””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“But you did.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I wanted to scare her.””

Adrian stared.

“Scare who?””

“Mia.””

The confession made everyone gasp.

Mia moved closer to Adrian.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at her.

And for a second, she looked ashamed.

“Because I wanted Sarah to feel what it was like to be afraid.””

Adrian’s expression turned cold.

“You used my daughter to punish Sarah.””

Vanessa had no answer.

The phone buzzed again.

Everyone looked.

A new message appeared.

This time from Sarah.

*I know you saw the video.*

Adrian opened it.

Another message followed.

*There is something you need to know about Vanessa.*

Claire leaned closer.

The next line appeared.

*She wasn't the only person in the house that night.*

Adrian looked up.

“What?””

The phone buzzed again.

A photo appeared.

A picture from the hallway camera.

The timestamp read:

*11:53 p.m.*

Sarah was standing there.

Vanessa was facing her.

And behind them…

A third shadow appeared on the wall.

Someone else had been watching.

Someone neither of them noticed.

Mia whispered:

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*Adrian, the person who hurt Mia has been inside your family for years.*
