Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Door
The message stayed on the screen.
*The person who hurt Mia has been inside your family for years.*
Adrian read it again.
Then again.
As if the words might change.
They didn’t.
The room that had once been filled with birthday decorations now felt unfamiliar.
The balloons still hung from the ceiling.
The cake still sat on the table.
The candles were still there.
But none of it looked like a celebration anymore.
It looked like a place where the truth had finally arrived.
Adrian slowly lowered the phone.
“Sarah.””
He whispered her name like she was standing right beside him.
“She knows who it is.””
Claire nodded.
“She’s trying to tell us.””
Vanessa stared at the message.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“I didn’t know.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“You just admitted you scared my daughter.””
“I know.””
“You admitted you were angry at Sarah.””
“I know.””
“And now someone else was involved?””
Vanessa looked desperate.
“I swear to you, I didn’t know anyone else was there.””
Claire watched her.
For once, Vanessa didn’t look defensive.
She looked terrified.
Adrian noticed.
“Who else was in this house?””
Nobody answered.
Then Mia quietly spoke.
“Aunt Vanessa?””
Vanessa turned.
“What?””
“Was it the person in my drawings?””
Everyone looked at Mia.
Claire knelt beside her.
“What drawings?””
Mia looked down.
“The ones Mommy kept.””
Adrian frowned.
“Where are those?””
Mia pointed toward the stairs.
“In my room.””
He immediately started walking.
Claire followed.
“Adrian, wait.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I need to see them.””
Mia reached for his hand.
He stopped.
Then he picked her up.
The little girl rested her head against his shoulder.
For the first time all day, she didn’t seem afraid of him.
That hurt him more than anything.
They walked upstairs.
The birthday decorations continued along the hallway.
Pink paper stars.
Photos of Mia from every year.
A timeline of a childhood he thought he understood.
Until now.
When they reached her room, Adrian pushed the door open.
Everything was exactly as Mia had left it.
Stuffed animals lined the bed.
Books sat neatly on the shelf.
A small nightlight shaped like a moon rested beside her pillow.
Claire walked toward the desk.
“What are we looking for?””
Mia pointed.
“The box.””
Adrian followed her finger.
A wooden box sat under the desk.
He placed Mia down and picked it up.
It was covered in stickers.
Princesses.
Animals.
Little drawings.
He opened it.
Inside were dozens of pieces of paper.
Drawings.
Claire picked up the first one.
A house.
A family.
Everyone was smiling.
Then she picked up another.
A family again.
But this time, one person was standing outside the house.
Alone.
“Is this the picture you meant?”” Claire asked softly.
Mia nodded.
“That’s me.””
Adrian looked at the drawing.
“Why are you outside?””
Mia touched the paper.
“Because I wasn't allowed inside.””
His heart stopped.
“What?””
Mia looked confused by his reaction.
“Sometimes Aunt Vanessa told me to wait in the hallway.””
Claire’s eyes widened.
“Why?””
“Because she said adults were talking.””
Adrian looked at Vanessa, who had followed them upstairs.
Vanessa looked away.
“Mia…”
“No,” Adrian said.
Vanessa stopped.
“Let her talk.””
Mia held another drawing.
“This is the door.””
She pointed.
“And this is me.””
A small stick figure stood outside a dark rectangle.
“And this?””
Adrian pointed to another figure.
A tall person drawn in black.
Mia became quiet.
Claire noticed.
“Mia?””
The little girl hugged the drawing.
“I don't like this one.””
Adrian lowered himself beside her.
“Why?””
“Because he gets angry.””
Everyone froze.
“He?””
Mia nodded.
“Who is he?””
She looked toward the hallway.
Then toward Vanessa.
Then back at the drawing.
“I don't know his name.””
Adrian felt his stomach tighten.
“What does he look like?””
Mia thought carefully.
“He wears a watch.””
“A watch?””
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
Mia touched the drawing.
“Black.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire looked at Vanessa.
“Do you know anyone who wears a black watch?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“No.””
Too quickly.
Claire noticed.
“Think.””
“I said no.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You’re hiding something.””
“No.””
“You are.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“I don't know who it is.””
“But you know something.””
Her silence answered for her.
Adrian stood.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa looked at Mia.
Then at him.
“I saw someone.””
The room went quiet.
“When?””
“Last night.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You said you didn't know anyone else was there.””
“I didn’t know who it was.””
“Then what did you see?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“When I came to the house, Sarah was already here.””
Adrian frowned.
“You came here before the party?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked embarrassed.
“Because I wanted to talk to her.””
“About what?””
“My anger.””
Claire crossed her arms.
“Convenient.””
“It’s the truth.””
“Keep going.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“When I arrived, I heard voices.””
“Sarah and who?””
“I thought Sarah was talking to herself.””
“But she wasn't.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at the drawing in Mia’s hand.
“She was arguing with someone.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“You saw them?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“Because I saw their shadow.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“What did the shadow look like?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Tall.””
“Man or woman?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don't know?””
“It was dark.””
Adrian looked frustrated.
“What else?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said:
“They were wearing a black watch.””
Mia’s fingers tightened around the drawing.
Claire looked at Adrian.
The same detail.
The same watch.
Someone else was there.
Adrian turned to Vanessa.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked down.
“That I would be blamed.””
“You were already hurting Mia.””
“I know.””
“And you still kept quiet?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Adrian looked away.
The anger was there.
But something else was too.
Fear.
Because now this was bigger than Vanessa.
Much bigger.
His phone rang.
Everyone jumped.
The caller ID appeared.
*Sarah.*
Adrian answered immediately.
“Sarah?””
For a moment, there was only breathing.
Then her voice came through.
“Adrian.””
He closed his eyes.
“Where are you?””
“I can't stay long.””
“Where are you?””
“I need you to listen.””
“Mia needs you.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I know.””
Adrian looked at his daughter.
“She thinks something happened to you.””
“I’m okay.””
“Then come home.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then Sarah whispered:
“Because the person who did this knows I have the recordings.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
“I mean they know.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked up.
The house went dark.
Mia gasped.
Adrian grabbed her.
“Stay with me.””
Claire pulled out her phone flashlight.
“Did the power go out?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“No.””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
Vanessa’s face was frozen.
“The lights don't go out when the power fails.””
“What are you saying?””
She pointed toward the basement door at the end of the hallway.
“They go out when someone flips the switch.””
A sound came from downstairs.
A door closing.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Someone was inside the house.
Adrian held Mia closer.
Sarah’s voice came through the phone.
“Adrian?””
He whispered:
“Someone is here.””
The line went silent.
Then Sarah said something that made his blood run cold.
“Adrian…”
“Yeah?””
“Do not let them reach Mia.””
The call ended.
And from the darkness downstairs, a voice spoke.
“Adrian?””
Everyone froze.
Because they knew that voice.
It was someone they trusted.
Someone who had been standing in the room with them all along.
May you like
Then the person added:
“I think it’s time we talked.””
