Thinking

Chapter 8: The Empty Classroom

Adrian did not wait for anyone to stop him.

He ran.

Past the kitchen.

Past the birthday table.

Past the balloons that still swayed beneath the ceiling as if nothing had happened.

Mia was gone.

His daughter was somewhere out there, and a stranger had just demanded that he come alone.

“Adrian!””

Claire caught up with him at the front door.

“You are not going alone.””

“He told Vanessa to tell me to come alone.””

“And you think that means you should actually do it?””

Adrian turned.

“You heard him.””

“Yes. I also heard enough to know this person planned everything.””

Daniel came down the stairs behind them.

“I’m coming.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“You don't know what you're walking into.””

“That’s exactly why you’re not coming.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

“I've listened to you all night.””

The words hit hard.

Daniel released his arm.

Claire stepped between them.

“We don't have time to argue.””

Vanessa stood several feet away, still holding the phone.

She looked at the screen again.

“He said the old school.””

Adrian turned.

“Which one?””

“St. Mary's.””

Mia had attended kindergarten there.

A small brick building less than fifteen minutes away.

Adrian immediately pulled out his keys.

Claire followed him.

“I’m driving.””

“No.””

“You’re too shaken.””

“I said no.””

“Then I'm coming in your car.””

Adrian stared at her.

Finally, he nodded.

Daniel stepped forward again.

“Adrian…”

“You stay here.””

“And do what?””

“Find Sarah.””

Daniel went silent.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“You stay with him.””

Vanessa nodded.

Then Adrian stopped.

“Wait.””

He turned back.

“Where is Sarah now?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Think.””

“I swear.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“She knew Mia was in danger. She had the recordings. She knew someone was watching this family. She wouldn't disappear without leaving something.””

Vanessa looked at the phone.

Then suddenly her eyes widened.

“The message.””

“What message?””

“Before the call.””

She opened the thread.

Another text was waiting.

*When Adrian arrives, he will find the truth where Mia first learned to fear me.*

Claire read it.

“That's the school.””

Adrian turned toward the door.

Then Vanessa said quietly:

“There’s something else.””

He stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“The school closed one classroom years ago.””

“Why?””

“A teacher disappeared.””

Adrian stared.

“When?””

“The year before Mia started there.””

Claire frowned.

“What does that have to do with her?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Adrian opened the door.

“Let's go.””

The drive felt endless.

Rain streaked across the windshield.

Claire watched the clock.

“Ten minutes.””

Adrian gripped the steering wheel.

“Mia hates thunder.””

“I know.””

“She'll be scared.””

Claire reached over and placed her hand over his wrist.

“She knows you're coming.””

Adrian swallowed.

“I should have seen this.””

“Don't do that now.””

“I should've believed her.””

“You know that.””

“She tried to tell me.””

“And now you're going to listen.””

Adrian stared through the windshield.

“I can't lose her.””

“You won't.””

Neither of them knew whether that was reassurance or a promise.

When they arrived at St. Mary's, the front gate was open.

Adrian slowed.

The school should have been locked.

The parking lot was empty.

No cars.

No lights.

Except one.

A hallway light flickering behind the main entrance.

Claire looked at the building.

“This doesn't feel right.””

Adrian parked.

They got out.

He looked around.

“Stay close.””

The front door stood slightly open.

They entered.

The smell of old floor wax and damp paper filled the hall.

Adrian called out.

“Mia!””

Nothing.

Claire tried the office door.

Unlocked.

Inside, everything looked abandoned.

Old attendance sheets.

Stacks of files.

A calendar from two years ago.

Adrian looked around.

“Why would someone bring her here?””

Claire pointed toward the hallway.

“There.””

A child's drawing was taped to the wall.

A house.

A little girl.

A dark figure standing outside the door.

Adrian's heart pounded.

“Mia drew that.””

Claire touched the paper.

“Maybe someone wanted you to find it.””

A sound came from farther down the hall.

A faint scraping noise.

Adrian followed it.

At the end of the corridor was a classroom door.

A brass plaque read:

*ROOM 6*

He recognized it immediately.

“Mia's first classroom.””

The door was locked.

A piece of white paper had been slid underneath.

Adrian picked it up.

Three words were written on it.

*You were late.*

His face hardened.

Claire looked around.

“Adrian…”

“What?””

“There are footprints.””

Wet shoe prints crossed the floor.

One set led toward Room 6.

Another set came from the opposite direction.

And one tiny set—

Mia’s shoes.

Adrian's breathing stopped.

“She was here.””

He tried the door again.

Locked.

Claire pointed toward the wall.

“Emergency key box.””

Adrian smashed the glass with his elbow.

He grabbed the key.

The lock clicked.

He opened the door.

The classroom was dark.

Small chairs.

Tiny desks.

Alphabet posters.

A faded mural of stars.

Mia's old name tag still hung above one desk.

Adrian stared at it.

Then he heard a quiet sound.

Sniffling.

“Mia?””

A tiny voice answered.

“Daddy?””

Adrian rushed toward the sound.

“Mia!””

The voice came from a storage room at the back.

He opened the door.

Empty.

The sniffling stopped.

Claire looked behind the shelves.

“It's a speaker.””

She found a small device hidden beneath a box.

A recording played automatically.

Mia's voice.

“Daddy?””

Adrian went still.

“This isn't live.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Mia's recorded voice said:

“I was here before.””

Adrian looked around.

The recording continued.

“Aunt Vanessa told me to wait in this room.””

Claire's eyes widened.

Then Vanessa's voice played.

“Stay here until your mother leaves.””

Adrian clenched his fists.

The recording continued.

Mia began crying.

“I want Daddy.””

“You can't.””

“Why?””

“Because he won't understand.””

Then another sound.

A door opening.

A man's voice.

“Is she here?””

Adrian stared at Claire.

The recording continued.

Vanessa whispered:

“She’s in the storage room.””

The man's voice answered:

“Good.””

Mia screamed.

Adrian stepped backward.

The audio crackled.

Then Vanessa said:

“No. Don't touch her.””

A struggle.

A loud crash.

Then the recording cut out.

Claire stared at Adrian.

“Vanessa knew.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Adrian—”

“She wasn't alone.””

They left the storage room.

At the front of the classroom stood a large metal cabinet.

Adrian noticed the back panel was slightly open.

“Help me.””

Together they moved it.

Behind it was a narrow doorway.

Claire stared.

“This school has another hidden room?””

Adrian opened it.

A steep set of stairs descended.

At the bottom was a small basement.

Someone had recently been there.

A blanket.

A bottle of water.

A child's stuffed rabbit.

Mia's rabbit.

Adrian grabbed it.

“She was here.””

Claire pointed.

“There.””

On a wooden table sat a small envelope.

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Mia at five years old.

She was standing outside the school.

Beside her was a man.

His face had been scratched out.

But his wrist was visible.

Black watch.

Adrian turned the photograph over.

A sentence was written on the back.

*Ask your brother why he stopped protecting you.*

Adrian froze.

Daniel.

Claire looked at him.

“You think he knows?””

Adrian shook his head.

“I don't know anymore.””

A noise came from behind them.

The basement door slammed shut.

Adrian spun around.

Locked.

Claire rushed to it.

“It's jammed!””

The lights went out.

A voice came from the darkness.

“You always were the last one to understand.””

Adrian turned toward the sound.

“Who are you?””

A match struck.

A small flame appeared.

A man stood at the far end of the basement.

Adrian could barely see his face.

But he could see the black watch.

The man smiled.

“You brought Claire.””

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

“How do you know her?””

The stranger took one step forward.

“Because I know your whole family.””

Adrian stepped in front of Claire.

“Where is my daughter?””

The man pointed toward the floor.

A trapdoor stood between them.

“She was here.””

“Where is she now?””

The stranger smiled.

“Ask your brother.””

Adrian’s phone suddenly rang.

The screen showed Daniel.

He answered.

“What?””

Daniel's voice was breathless.

“Adrian, listen to me. I figured out who he is.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then Daniel whispered:

“He's not an outsider.””

Adrian stared at the man.

Daniel continued.

“He's Dad's son.””

May you like

The stranger's smile disappeared.

And beneath the crack of thunder outside, the basement floor suddenly began to open.
