Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Restaurant
Marco Bellini had always been invisible.
That was what made him dangerous.
For fifteen years, he had walked through Il Destino carrying paperwork, approving schedules, greeting important guests, and remembering every employee’s birthday.
He knew which businessmen preferred private rooms.
Which politicians arrived late.
Which servers talked too much.
Which cameras had blind spots.
He knew everything.
And nobody ever looked twice.
Rico Moretti stared at him.
The man who had managed his restaurant.
The man who had stood beside him after Elena’s supposed death.
The man who had watched Leo fall apart.
“You.””
Marco smiled sadly.
“I was hoping for a warmer welcome.””
Dante stepped forward immediately.
Rico raised a hand.
Not because he trusted Marco.
Because he wanted answers.
“Explain.””
Marco looked around the room.
At Elena.
At Clara.
At Leo.
Then back at Rico.
“You always did this.””
Rico’s expression hardened.
“Did what?””
“Assumed power meant control.””
A strange calm filled Marco’s voice.
“I spent years watching you make decisions. Buying companies. Destroying competitors. Removing anyone who threatened you.””
Rico stepped closer.
“And?””
“And you never noticed the people standing next to you.””
The words landed.
Because they were true.
Rico had always looked outward.
Never inward.
Elena’s voice was quiet.
“Marco.””
He looked at her.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You helped them.””
Marco didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Leo moved closer to Clara.
She wrapped an arm around him.
Marco noticed.
His eyes narrowed.
“So this is the girl.””
Rico immediately looked at him.
“What did you say?””
“The waitress.””
Marco laughed softly.
“The one Elena trusted.””
Clara felt a chill.
“You knew about me.””
“Of course I did.””
Rico’s voice dropped.
“Why?””
Marco walked toward the desk.
“Because Elena spent years preparing for the possibility that something would happen.””
He touched the photograph of Elena and Leo.
“She knew someone inside your world would betray you.””
Rico’s jaw tightened.
“She knew it was you?””
“No.””
Marco smiled.
“She suspected everyone.””
Elena looked disgusted.
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
Marco looked at her.
“Even you suspected Rico.””
Silence.
Rico turned.
“Elena?””
She looked away.
A painful pause.
“After everything I saw…”
Rico’s face changed.
“You suspected me?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I suspected the world around you.””
The answer hurt him.
But before he could respond, Marco continued.
“She hired Jonathan Vance.””
Clara froze.
“My father?””
Marco nodded.
“Your father was the only person Elena believed she could trust.””
Clara stared.
“Why?””
“Because he wasn’t interested in money.””
Marco looked at Rico.
“He refused to become part of your empire.””
Rico’s expression darkened.
“My empire?””
Marco smiled.
“See? You still don’t understand.””
He walked toward the window.
“You built a machine, Rico. You convinced yourself it was protection. But everyone inside it became part of the danger.””
Clara looked between them.
“Then what happened to my father?””
Marco’s smile faded.
“Your father found evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“Proof that someone was moving money through Moretti companies.””
Rico immediately understood.
“A traitor.””
Marco nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Marco looked directly at him.
“Someone you trusted more than anyone.””
Dante shifted.
“Stop playing games.””
Marco laughed.
“You think I’m the only one?””
The room became tense.
Rico’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Marco reached inside his coat.
Dante immediately raised his weapon.
But Marco only pulled out a small envelope.
He placed it on the desk.
“Inside is the evidence your wife hid.””
Rico didn’t touch it.
“Why give it to me?””
Marco looked at Elena.
“Because she was right.””
Everyone looked confused.
Marco continued:
“She was right to run.””
Elena’s face went pale.
“Marco.””
“You know what happens if he finds out.””
Rico stepped forward.
“Finds out what?””
Nobody answered.
The silence became unbearable.
Then Leo spoke.
“Daddy?””
Rico turned.
The boy was staring at Marco.
Not scared.
Confused.
“Why does he smell like Uncle?””
Everyone froze.
Rico looked at his son.
“What did you say?””
Leo pointed at Marco.
“Uncle.””
Marco’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
But Clara saw it.
And so did Rico.
“Leo,” Rico said slowly, “who is Uncle?””
The boy looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Then he whispered:
“Mommy said not to talk about him.””
Elena’s face went white.
Because she knew exactly who Leo meant.
“Rico…”
But before she could finish, the lights went out.
The room disappeared into darkness.
A gunshot exploded.
Glass shattered.
Someone screamed.
Then emergency lights flickered on.
Rico immediately grabbed Leo.
Dante moved toward the window.
Clara searched for Elena.

Marco was gone.
And on the desk, the envelope had disappeared.
