Chapter 1: The Hand He Chose

The child who had bitten the first man who touched him willingly held her hand.

For three seconds, nobody in Il Destino moved.

The restaurant had been filled with noise only minutes earlier—glasses clinking, conversations flowing, expensive perfumes mixing with the scent of garlic and roasted herbs drifting from the kitchen.

Now there was only silence.

Clara Vance looked down at the tiny fingers wrapped around hers.

Leo Moretti’s hand was small.

Warm.

Shaking.

She could feel the fear still trapped inside him.

“Hi,” she whispered.

The little boy blinked.

His cheeks were wet from tears, and his dark curls stuck to his forehead.

“You’re holding my finger,” Clara said softly.

“That means you’re doing a brave thing.””

Leo looked confused.

Maybe nobody had called him brave in a long time.

Across the table, Rico Moretti stood frozen.

A man who had spent years making other people nervous suddenly looked like he didn’t know what to do with his own hands.

Dante Russo stared at the scene.

“Boss…”

Rico didn’t answer.

His eyes never left his son.

Leo released Clara’s finger only to reach for the glass of milk again.

He took another sip.

Then another.

The room slowly began breathing again.

A businessman near the window leaned toward his wife and whispered, “Did that just happen?””

His wife shook her head.

“I’ve heard stories about that kid.””

Clara heard.

She also saw Rico hear.

His expression hardened.

Not at her.

At himself.

Rico lowered himself into the chair beside Leo.

“Leo.””

The boy immediately looked away.

That tiny movement hurt more than any scream.

Clara noticed.

Rico noticed too.

The most powerful man in the room had just been rejected by a three-year-old.

And somehow, that was the only thing that could hurt him.

“I’m going to check the kitchen,” Clara said quietly.

Leo’s fingers tightened around hers.

She stopped.

The boy didn’t speak.

He didn’t need to.

Everyone understood.

He didn’t want her to leave.

Rico’s eyes lifted.

“Stay.””

It wasn’t a command.

It was almost a request.

Clara looked at him.

“I’m still working.””

“You’re not fired.””

The entire staff froze.

Marco Bellini nearly dropped the tray he was carrying.

Rico Moretti never changed his mind.

Not publicly.

Not when people were watching.

But tonight, he had.

Clara slowly sat on the edge of the chair beside Leo.

“Okay.””

For the next twenty minutes, the impossible happened.

Leo ate three bites of pasta.

He allowed Clara to wipe a little sauce from his cheek.

He even answered one question.

“What’s your favorite color?”” she asked.

The boy looked down.

“Blue.””

“Like the ocean?””

He nodded.

“Mommy liked blue.””

The words landed like a stone.

Rico’s face went pale.

Clara glanced at him.

She had heard Elena Moretti’s name everywhere.

But she had never seen the grief behind it.

Rico looked away.

After dinner, Clara walked Leo to the private elevator.

She expected Rico to take his son.

Instead, Leo held onto her apron.

“Leo,” Rico said gently, “come here.””

The boy hesitated.

Then he looked at Clara.

Waiting.

Asking permission without words.

Clara smiled.

“Your dad is right there.””

Leo slowly walked over.

Rico picked him up.

For one second, father and son were together.

Then Leo whispered something into Rico’s ear.

Rico’s expression changed.

“What did he say?”” Clara asked before she could stop herself.

Rico looked at her.

“He asked if you’re coming tomorrow.””

Clara smiled sadly.

“I work tomorrow night.””

Leo looked relieved.

Then the elevator doors opened.

A man in a gray suit stepped out.

Rico immediately changed.

The softness disappeared.

The businessman returned.

The dangerous man returned.

The stranger handed him a sealed envelope.

“Mr. Moretti, this came from the investigation team.””

Rico took it.

His jaw tightened when he saw the name written on the front.

Clara didn’t mean to read it.

But she saw it anyway.

Elena Moretti.

Rico stared at the envelope.

Then at his son.

Then at Clara.

And for the first time that night, Clara realized something.

May you like

Leo hadn’t only reached for her hand.

He had accidentally pulled her into a war that had started six months ago.
