Chapter 10: The Child Who Carried the Secret
Rico Moretti had faced armed men.
He had faced betrayal.
He had faced enemies who smiled while holding knives behind their backs.
But nothing had prepared him for four words.
Leo Moretti is not your biological son.
The sentence destroyed something inside him that even bullets never could.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Leo stood near Clara, holding the blue toy Elena had given him years ago.
Completely unaware that the adults around him had just watched their world collapse.
Rico looked at Elena.
Slowly.
Almost afraid.
“Explain.””
Elena’s face was covered in tears.
“Rico…”
“Explain.””
His voice was quieter this time.
That made it worse.
Elena looked down.
“Leo is your son.””
Rico stared.
“Dante said he isn’t.””
“Biologically.””
The word cut through the room.
Rico stepped back.
“You knew?””
Elena didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
“I found out after he was born.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I was afraid.””
The anger that appeared on Rico’s face was immediate.
“Afraid of what?””
Elena looked at him.
“Of losing him.””
The answer silenced him.
Because that was the one thing Rico understood.
Losing Leo had been his greatest fear since Elena died.
Or since he thought she died.
“What happened?”” Rico asked.
Elena took a shaky breath.
“When I was pregnant, Matteo found out.””
Everyone looked at Matteo.
His expression was unreadable.
“He knew Leo wasn’t yours,” Elena continued.
Rico’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“Because he was the one who arranged the situation.””
The room went cold.
Matteo finally spoke.
“You’re blaming me?””
Elena turned toward him.
“You manipulated everything.””
Clara looked confused.
“Someone please explain.””
Elena looked at her.
“Before I met Rico, I was trying to escape my family.””
She glanced at Matteo.
“My brother controlled everything. My choices. My money. My relationships.””
Matteo scoffed.
“You make me sound like a monster.””
“You threatened anyone who got close to me.””
Rico clenched his jaw.
“And Leo?””
Elena looked at him.
“Leo was conceived before I met you.””
The words hurt.
Even though Rico already knew.
“Who is his father?””
Nobody answered.
Then Matteo smiled.
“I think you deserve to know.””
Elena’s expression changed.
“Don’t.””
But Matteo continued.
“His father was my closest friend.””
Rico looked at him.
“Who?””
Matteo’s smile disappeared.
“Jonathan Vance.””
The room went silent.
Clara froze.
“No.””
Elena looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
Clara shook her head.
“No.””
Her eyes filled.
“My father?””
Elena nodded.
“Jonathan was the only good man in that world.””
Rico stared at Elena.
“So you married me while carrying another man’s child.””
“I married you because I loved you.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
Rico looked away.
“Did Jonathan know?””
“Yes.””
“And he left me his daughter?””
“He protected both of you.””
Clara felt like she couldn’t breathe.
Her entire life had become a story written by people who never asked her permission.
“My father knew?””
Elena nodded.
“He raised you because he loved you.””
“And you?””
Elena looked at her.
“I watched from a distance.””
Clara laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””
“No.””
Elena’s voice broke.
“It’s supposed to make you understand I was wrong.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Leo walked toward Rico.
“Daddy?””
Rico looked down.
The little boy reached for him.
And that was when Rico realized something.
The child in front of him was not a blood connection.
Not a name.
Not an inheritance.
Just his son.
The boy who cried when he left the room.
The boy who held his hand in the hospital.
The boy who had finally called him Daddy without fear.
Rico dropped to his knees.
“I’m here.””
Leo touched his face.
“Sad?””
Rico closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Because the truth was complicated.
Because adults broke things children had to live with.
Because love was supposed to be simple.
But he only said:
“Because I was scared.””
Leo hugged him.
And Rico held on.
For the first time all night, Matteo looked uncomfortable.
Clara noticed.
“You wanted this.””
Matteo looked at her.
“What?””
“To hurt them.””
“No.””
“Then why reveal everything?””
Matteo’s expression hardened.
“Because the truth matters.””
Clara stared at him.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Because control matters to you.””
The words hit him.
“You think you know me.””
“I know enough.””
A tense silence followed.
Then Rico stood.
His grief was still there.
But something else had returned.
The man everyone feared.
“Dante.””
“Yes, boss?””
“Lock every exit.””
Matteo’s expression changed.
“You’re going to arrest me?””
“No.””
Rico looked at him.
“I’m going to find out what else you’re hiding.””
Matteo smiled.
“You still think I’m the biggest threat.””
Rico’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Matteo looked toward the window.
Then at Leo.
“Ask yourself one question.””
“What?””
“Who told Dante to run that DNA test?””
Nobody answered.
Because suddenly everyone understood.
The test had not been ordered by Rico.
Or Elena.
Or Clara.
Someone else wanted the truth revealed.
Someone else had access.
And someone else had been watching.
Dante’s phone buzzed.
He checked it.
His face changed.
“What?””
He looked at Rico.
“Boss…”
“Say it.””
Dante swallowed.
“The DNA sample wasn’t requested from the hospital.””
“Then where did it come from?””
May you like
Dante looked at Leo.
“It came from inside your house.””
