Chapter 11: The Enemy Wearing a Familiar Face
Rico Moretti trusted very few people.
That was why betrayal hurt differently.
An enemy outside the walls was expected.
An enemy inside the walls was a failure.
And Rico hated failure.
The security team searched the mansion before sunrise.
Every room.
Every camera.
Every employee.
Nobody was allowed to leave.
Clara sat in the living room beside Leo.
The boy had fallen asleep against her shoulder.
She watched him breathe.
A small, peaceful thing in a world filled with secrets.
“You should rest.””
Rico’s voice came from behind her.
She looked up.
“You?””
He nodded.
“I don’t sleep much.””
“That’s obvious.””
For the first time in hours, something almost like a smile appeared.
Almost.
Clara looked back at Leo.
“Does it change anything?””
Rico knew what she meant.
“Leo?””
She nodded.
He was quiet.
“No.””
The answer surprised her.
“No?””
“He’s my son.””
“But biologically…”
“I don’t care.””
Rico looked at the child.
“I was there when he learned to walk.””
His voice lowered.
“I was there when he got sick.””
A pause.
“I was there when he cried for his mother.””
Clara watched him.
“That’s being a father.””
Rico looked at her.
“You sound like you’re defending me.””
“I’m not.””
A small smile.
“I’m reminding you.””
For a moment, the silence between them felt different.
Less dangerous.
More human.
Then Elena entered.
She looked exhausted.
“Rico.””
He stood.
“What?””
“I need to tell you something.””
Clara immediately sensed the tension.
“What?””
Elena looked at her.
“Not everything about Leo’s birth was an accident.””
Rico’s expression hardened.
“Explain.””
Elena looked down.
“When Matteo found out I was pregnant, he tried to use Leo.””
“For what?””
“Leverage.””
Rico’s hands tightened.
“He wanted control over me.””
“And over you,” Elena said.
Rico stared.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
Clara understood.
“He wanted Leo to become a connection between families.””
Elena nodded.
“He knew if I married you, Leo would become your heir.””
Rico looked disgusted.
“He saw my son as a business arrangement.””
“Yes.””
Then Elena looked at Clara.
“And he saw you as insurance.””
Clara frowned.
“What?””
“If something happened to Leo, Matteo believed you would be the next person he could control.””
The room became silent.
Rico’s expression turned dangerous.
“He planned this before Leo was born.””
“Yes.””
A knock interrupted them.
Dante entered.
“We found something.””
Rico turned.
“What?””
“The DNA test.””
Everyone became quiet.
Dante held a tablet.
“It wasn’t stolen.””
“Then?””
“It was copied.””
Rico frowned.
“By who?””
Dante hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
He handed the tablet over.
The security footage showed a person entering the mansion office.
A person everyone recognized.
Clara felt her stomach drop.
“No.””
Rico stared.
Because the person on camera was someone they trusted.
Someone who had been there for Leo.
Someone who had comforted him.
Someone who had access to everything.
The nanny.
“Why would she do this?”” Clara whispered.
Dante shook his head.
“She didn’t.””
Rico looked at him.
“What?””
“The footage was manipulated.””
Silence.
“So someone wants us to think it was her.””
Dante nodded.
Rico stared at the screen.
The person behind the betrayal was getting closer.
But not closer physically.
Closer emotionally.
Someone who understood their routines.
Someone who knew where cameras were.
Someone who knew Leo.
Then the mansion alarm sounded.
Everyone froze.
Dante immediately moved.
“Security breach.””
Rico grabbed his weapon.
“Location?””
“Leo’s room.””
The world stopped.
Rico ran.
Clara followed.
They reached the hallway.
The door was open.
The room was empty.
The blue toy sat on the floor.
And on the bed was a note.
Rico picked it up.
His hands shook.
