Chapter 5: The Truth Beneath Elena’s Name
Clara had spent her entire life believing she knew her own story.
She knew where she came from.
She knew who her parents were.
She knew why she had no relatives calling on holidays and why family photographs were limited to a small box under her bed.
She had always thought her loneliness was just bad luck.
Now she wondered if it had been planned.
The next morning, she sat across from Rico Moretti inside his office.
Again.
She hated that she was becoming familiar with rooms she had no business entering.
“I want answers,” she said.
Rico looked exhausted.
He had not slept.
Neither had she.
“You’re not the only one.””
“That doesn’t help me.””
“No.””
He folded his hands.
“But it’s the truth.””
Clara stared at him.
“Tell me about Matteo Vance.””
Rico was quiet.
Finally, he spoke.
“Matteo was Elena’s older brother.””
“And?””
“And he was dangerous.””
“That’s convenient.””
Rico’s eyes narrowed.
“You think I’m making this up?””
“I think powerful people always have a reason for calling someone else dangerous.””
The words hit harder because Rico knew there was truth in them.
“Elena loved her brother.””
“Then why would he threaten your son?””
“Because love doesn’t always stop people from becoming monsters.””
Clara looked away.
She hated how much she believed him.
The office door opened.
Leo walked in with his nanny.
The moment he saw Clara, he smiled.
Rico noticed.
Again.
Always.
“Come here,” Clara said.
Leo ran to her.
The nanny looked relieved.
“He wouldn’t eat breakfast until he knew she was here.””
Rico looked at his son.
“Leo.””
The boy froze.
He knew that voice.
Not angry.
Concerned.
“Did you refuse food?””
Leo looked down.
Clara tried not to smile.
Rico sighed.
“You’re learning from her already.””
Leo smiled slightly.
It was the first time Clara had seen him do that.
A real smile.
A child’s smile.
Then the moment disappeared when Dante entered.
“Boss.””
Rico immediately stood.
“What?””
“We found the original accident report.””
Clara watched his expression.
“What’s wrong?””
Dante placed a folder on the desk.
“The accident six months ago.””
Rico opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
“What?””
Clara stepped closer.
Rico didn’t stop her.
“The car Elena was driving…”
He swallowed.
“It wasn’t attacked.””
Silence.
“What do you mean?””
Dante answered.
“The bullet marks were added later.””
Clara felt cold.
“Someone staged it?””
Rico nodded slowly.
“They wanted me to believe she was dead.””
“Why?””
Rico looked at Leo.
And Clara saw the answer before he said it.
“They wanted me grieving.””
A pause.
“Distracted.””
Clara whispered:
“From what?””
Rico didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
That frightened him more than anything.
Then another detail caught his attention.
A small note attached to the file.
Rico removed it.
His hands tightened.
“What?””
He handed it to Clara.
The handwriting was Elena’s.
Rico, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect our family.
Clara’s heart raced.
She continued reading.
Do not trust the people closest to you.
She looked up.
Rico was silent.
Because everyone in the room understood what that meant.
The enemy wasn’t outside.
It was inside.
Dante looked toward the security cameras.
“Boss.””
“What?””
“There’s someone at the entrance.””
Rico’s hand moved instinctively toward his weapon.
“Who?””
Dante hesitated.
“A woman.””
Clara felt something strange.
“Who?””
Dante looked at the screen.
Then his face changed.
“She says her name is Elena Moretti.””
Nobody moved.
Leo looked up.
“Mommy?””
Rico stared at the camera.
The woman standing outside wore a long black coat.
Her face was hidden.
But her posture.
Her movements.
Everything about her.
It was familiar.
Rico whispered:
“No.””
The doors opened.
The woman stepped inside.

And when she removed her sunglasses, every person in the room forgot how to breathe.
Because Elena Moretti was alive.
