Chapter 12: The Daughter of Two Worlds

Rico Moretti had spent his entire life believing fear was a weapon.

If people feared him, they respected him.

If they respected him, they obeyed.

If they obeyed, the people he loved stayed safe.

But standing inside Leo’s empty bedroom, holding that note, he finally understood something.

Fear protected nothing.

Love was the thing that made people vulnerable.

And someone had just used his love against him.

“Find him.””

The order was quiet.

But every person in the room felt it.

Dante nodded.

“We will.””

Rico looked around.

“No.””

Everyone stopped.

“We don’t search like this.””

Dante frowned.

“Boss?””

“Whoever took him knows our methods.””

Rico looked at the cameras.

“They know our blind spots.””

He looked at the security team.

“They know how we think.””

Clara stood near the doorway.

Her face was pale.

“Then who?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was terrifying.

Someone close.

Elena walked into the room.

And immediately knew.

Her expression collapsed.

“Where is Leo?””

Rico looked at her.

“He’s gone.””

Elena covered her mouth.

“No.””

The sound wasn’t the sound of a powerful woman.

It was the sound of a mother.

“I told you.””

Rico turned.

“What?””

Elena looked at him.

“I told you Matteo wasn’t alone.””

Dante stepped closer.

“You know who helped him?””

Elena shook her head.

“Not exactly.””

“Then start explaining.””

She looked at Clara.

“When I disappeared, I wasn’t hiding from Matteo.””

Clara frowned.

“Then who?””

Elena looked at Rico.

“I was hiding from the person Matteo feared.””

The room went quiet.

“Matteo feared someone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Elena hesitated.

Then said:

“Your father.””

Rico froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Impossible.””

Elena shook her head.

“Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was.””

The words landed heavily.

Rico’s father had been dead for ten years.

A respected businessman.

A man whose name built the Moretti empire.

“What does my father have to do with this?””

Elena looked toward the empty room.

“Everything.””

Clara stepped forward.

“Explain.””

Elena took a breath.

“Years ago, Jonathan Vance discovered that your father and Matteo were working together.””

Rico stared.

“No.””

“He discovered they were using companies to move money and information.””

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The truth kept breaking pieces of him.

“He was the reason Jonathan died.””

Clara went still.

Rico looked at her.

“Clara…”

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“No more secrets.””

She looked at Elena.

“Tell us everything.””

Elena nodded.

“Your father discovered the truth.””

She looked at Rico.

“He tried to expose them.””

“And?””

“He failed.””

A pause.

“Because someone close to him betrayed him.””

Rico’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Elena looked toward the hallway.

“I don’t know.””

Then every phone in the room rang at the same time.

Everyone froze.

Dante checked his.

Unknown number.

Rico answered.

A child’s voice came through.

“Daddy?””

Rico’s heart stopped.

“Leo?””

A shaky breath.

“Daddy…”

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then another voice.

An adult voice.

“Hello, Rico.””

Rico knew it immediately.

Matteo.

“Where is my son?””

“You still don’t understand.””

Rico’s grip tightened.

“Understand what?””

“That Leo was never the target.””

A pause.

“The target was always you.””

Rico’s eyes moved toward Clara.

“Why?””

Matteo answered:

“Because Elena’s daughter is the key.””

Clara froze.

“What key?””

Matteo continued.

“Your father left something behind.””

Rico’s expression changed.

“What?””

“Something hidden.””

“Where?””

Matteo laughed softly.

“With her.””

Everyone looked at Clara.

Her face went pale.

“I don’t have anything.””

Matteo’s voice came through the phone.

“You do.””

A pause.

“You’ve had it your entire life.””

Clara touched the necklace around her neck.

The only thing her father had left her.

The only thing she never removed.

Matteo whispered:

“Open the pendant.””

Clara stopped breathing.

Because nobody knew about the pendant.

Nobody.

Except her father.

And now Matteo.

She slowly removed it.

Her fingers shook.

Rico stared.

“What is that?””

Clara opened the small metal piece.

Inside was a tiny photograph.

Not of her.

Not of Jonathan.

But of Elena.

And a message written on the back.

A message that changed everything.

Clara, if you are reading this, your mother survived because I betrayed the Morettis.

The phone went silent.

Then Matteo spoke one final time.

“Now you know the truth.””

A pause.

May you like

“And now you have to decide who deserves to be saved.””

The call ended.
