Chapter 9: The Letter My Wife Left Behind

The next morning, I drove to the place where Claire and I first met.

A small park near the river.

It was strange how the world could continue moving while yours was falling apart.

People walked their dogs.

Children played.

Couples laughed.

Nobody knew that my entire understanding of the past had changed overnight.

I sat on the bench where Claire once told me she wanted three children.

We only had one.

But she loved Emily enough to fill the world with that love.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Michael.

*I found the last thing Claire left for you.*

I immediately called.

“Where is it?””

“Dad had it.””

“Why?””

“Because Claire asked him to keep it safe.””

My heart started racing.

“Bring it.””

Twenty minutes later, Michael arrived.

He handed me a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not printed.

Written.

In Claire’s handwriting.

The sight almost destroyed me.

I hadn’t seen her handwriting in three years.

I ran my thumb over the letters.

“Why didn’t you give me this before?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“Because Dad told me not to.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted to protect you until he knew the truth.””

I stared at him.

“My whole family kept secrets from me.””

“I know.””

“No. You don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You all decided what I could handle.””

Michael looked down.

“You’re right.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one page.

Only one.

*Daniel,*

*If you are reading this, then I wasn’t able to explain everything myself. I’m sorry.*

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

*First, I need you to know that I love you. I loved you before Emily was born, and I loved you every day after. Nothing changed that.*

I swallowed.

*But I made a mistake. I trusted someone because I wanted to believe people could change.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

*Rebecca knows things about our family that she shouldn’t know.*

I stopped reading.

My heart pounded.

Claire knew Rebecca.

Before me.

I continued.

*She approached me months before she met you. She asked questions about our life. About your finances. About Emily.*

I closed my eyes.

*At first, I thought she was harmless. Then I realized she wasn’t interested in friendship. She was interested in becoming part of our family.*

My breathing became uneven.

The river moved quietly in front of me.

The world felt unreal.

Then I reached the final lines.

*Daniel, if anything happens to me, protect Emily. Do not trust anyone who says they know what is best for her. Especially someone who believes love requires removing what is inconvenient.*

I lowered the letter.

Michael looked at me.

“She knew.””

I nodded.

“She knew.””

For three years, I thought Claire’s death was the tragedy.

But maybe the tragedy started before that.

Maybe someone had been trying to enter our lives long before we noticed.

I folded the letter carefully.

“What happened to the investigation?””

Michael looked away.

“Dad stopped it.””

“Why?””

“He found something.””

“What?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he said:

“A recording.””

My heart stopped.

“A recording of what?””

He looked at me.

“Claire’s last conversation before the accident.””

I stood up.

“Where is it?””

Michael’s face changed.

And I knew there was something else.

Something he had been hiding.

“Daniel…”

“Where is it?””

He swallowed.

“Rebecca has it.””

The wind seemed to disappear.

The river.

The cars.

The voices around us.

Everything faded.

Rebecca didn’t just know about Claire.

She didn’t just plan to remove Emily.

She had something that could explain my wife’s death.

And she had kept it hidden.

I looked at Michael.

“Why would she keep that?””

He answered quietly.

“Because the recording proves she was there.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

“Where?””

May you like

Michael looked directly into my eyes.

“On the night Claire died.””
