Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Plan
I stared at my brother’s name.
For two years, I had wondered when Michael would call.
I imagined dozens of conversations.
I imagined him apologizing for leaving after our father died.
I imagined him saying he was sorry he disappeared when I needed family the most.
I never imagined he would call the morning after my wedding collapsed.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then his voice.
Older.
Colder.
“Daniel.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Michael.””
“I heard about the wedding.””
Of course he had.
The entire town probably had by now.
“You heard?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
“And you’re calling to check if I’m okay?””
Another pause.
That silence told me everything.
“No,” he said.
My chest tightened.
“Then why are you calling?””
“I need you to listen before you make another mistake.””
I almost laughed.
“Another mistake?””
“Daniel—”
“No. Explain something to me.””
I stood from the table.
“Did you help Rebecca remove my daughter?””
Silence.
Not denial.
Not shock.
Silence.
That was worse.
“Who told you that?””
I closed my eyes.
“You did.””
“I did not.””
“You’re not surprised.””
His breathing changed.
“Where are you?””
“Why?””
“We need to talk face to face.””
“I’m asking questions now.””
“Daniel.””
His voice became serious.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
I looked at my aunt.
She was watching me carefully.
“I know about the documents.””
Silence.
“I know Dad didn’t want Emily taken away.””
Another silence.
Then Michael sighed.
“You found the letter.””
My heart sank.
“You knew about the letter?””
“Daniel—”
“You knew.””
His voice lowered.
“Dad was confused at the end.””
I felt anger explode through me.
“Don’t.””
“What?””
“Don’t use his illness to excuse what you did.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By taking my daughter?””
“No.””
“By convincing Dad I was failing?””
“You were drowning.””
The words shocked me.
“What?””
Michael continued.
“You lost your wife. You stopped living. You became obsessed with being the perfect father because you were afraid of losing Emily too.””
My hands shook.
“You think loving my daughter is obsession?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
“I think you forgot you were a person.””
I stared at the wall.
For a second, I remembered my father saying something similar.
But hearing it from Michael felt different.
Because my father had worried about me.
Michael was using that worry.
“You convinced Dad to sign something.””
“I convinced him to prepare.””
“And then?””
Silence.
“Michael.””
Finally, he said:
“Rebecca changed the plan.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“She was supposed to wait.””
“Wait for what?””
“For you to agree.””
I felt sick.
“She was never going to ask me.””
“That was her mistake.””
“And yours?””
He didn’t answer.
I walked away from the table.
“You knew she planned this wedding.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she planned to send Emily away.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I thought she would realize how wrong it was.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You thought?””
“I was trying to avoid destroying your life.””
“You destroyed it anyway.””
He became quiet.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Daniel, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Rebecca wasn’t the only person who believed Emily needed to leave.””
I froze.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying there are things you don’t know about your daughter’s situation.””
“My daughter’s situation?””
“Yes.””
My voice dropped.
“What did you do?””
No answer.
“Michael.””
Finally, he spoke.
“I found something in Dad’s files.””
“What?””
“A report.””
“What kind of report?””
A long pause.
Then:
“About Emily’s biological mother.””
My heart stopped.
My daughter’s mother had died three years earlier.
There was no mystery.
No unfinished story.
At least, that was what I believed.
“What report?””
Michael’s voice became quieter.
“The kind that explains why your father was so afraid.””
I looked toward the window.
The world outside continued like nothing had changed.
People walked.
Cars drove by.
Everyone living normal lives.
But my family’s secrets were opening one by one.
“What did the report say?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
Then he whispered:
“Daniel… your wife’s death wasn’t as simple as you were told.””
The call ended.
I stood there frozen.
My father’s hidden documents.
Rebecca’s betrayal.
Michael’s lies.
And now my wife’s death.
For three years, I thought I knew the story of my family.
But suddenly, I realized I had only been told the version someone wanted me to believe.

And upstairs, my seven-year-old daughter was sleeping peacefully.
Unaware that the biggest secret of her life had just been uncovered.
