Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I didn’t speak for several seconds.
The name Rebecca felt like poison now.
Every memory.
Every conversation.
Every smile.
I didn’t know what was real anymore.
“What did Claire find?””
Michael was quiet.
“Daniel, you need to understand something.””
“I don’t need another warning.””
“I’m trying to tell you the truth.””
“You’ve had years to do that.””
He didn’t argue.
That scared me.
“Claire discovered Rebecca wasn’t who she claimed to be.””
I looked at the folder.
“Explain.””
“Rebecca didn’t meet you by chance.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying she knew who you were before you met.””
The room became silent.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
I remembered.
The first time Rebecca met me.
A coffee shop.
A spilled drink.
A conversation that felt strangely easy.
She knew I had a daughter.
She knew my wife had died.
She knew exactly what to say.
At the time, I thought she was kind.
Now I wondered if she was prepared.
“How long did she know about me?””
Michael answered quietly.
“Months.””
I sat down.
“Why?””
“That’s what Claire was trying to discover.””
I looked at my aunt.
She was listening.
“Did Dad know?””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“And he never told me?””
“He was trying to protect you.””
“By hiding everything?””
Michael sighed.
“Dad made mistakes.””
That was the first honest thing he had said.
I looked through the documents again.
“Where is the proof?””
“I have it.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You have it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Another pause.
“Because Dad gave it to me.””
The betrayal felt fresh all over again.
“You had evidence.””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing.””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
His answer was barely a whisper.
“Of being wrong.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So you let Rebecca destroy my family because you weren’t sure?””
“I thought she loved you.””
“And now?””
Silence.
“Now I know I was wrong.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where are you?””
“I’m coming to your house.””
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“You don’t get to appear when you feel guilty.””
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I deserve that.””
I didn’t answer.
Then he said:
“But Emily deserves the truth.””
That stopped me.
Because no matter how angry I was, everything came back to her.
“Come.””
I hung up.
Two hours later, Michael stood at my front door.
The last time I saw him, he was leaving our father’s funeral.
Now he looked older.
Tired.
Like he had been carrying a secret too heavy for one person.
He looked past me.
“Where’s Emily?””
“Upstairs.””
He nodded.
“I’m glad.””
“Why?””
“Because she shouldn’t hear this.””
I stepped aside.
“Start talking.””
He sat at the kitchen table.
For a moment, he looked like my brother again.
The person who taught me how to ride a bike.
The person who stayed awake all night with me after Claire died.
Then I remembered.
The person who knew.
“The day Claire died wasn’t random.””
My jaw tightened.
“Go on.””
“Claire called Dad.””
“Before the accident?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Michael looked down.
“She told him she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Rebecca.””
I felt a chill.
“Why?””
“Because Claire discovered Rebecca had been asking questions.””
“What kind of questions?””
“About your money.””
The answer landed heavily.
I stared at him.
“Rebecca knew about my finances?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She researched you.””
I stood up.
“This is insane.””
Michael opened his bag.
He pulled out a folder.
“Read it.””
Inside were printed emails.
Messages.
Bank records.
I scanned the pages.
Then I saw something.
A name.
A name connected to Rebecca.
Not family.
Not a friend.
A company.
A company that had contacted her before she ever met me.
“What is this?””
Michael looked at me.
“Rebecca was in debt.””
I frowned.
“How much?””
“More than you know.””
I kept reading.
The numbers were huge.
“She married me for money?””
Michael didn’t answer.
But he didn’t need to.
I felt sick.
All those nights.
All those promises.
All those moments where I thought I had found someone who loved my daughter.
Maybe she was only waiting for access.
Then I heard footsteps.
I turned.
Emily stood at the bottom of the stairs.
She had tears in her eyes.
“How much did Rebecca hate me?””
My heart broke.
“Emily—”
“I heard everything.””
I rushed toward her.
But she stepped back.
Not because she was afraid of me.
Because she was afraid of the answer.
“Did she only marry you because of money?””
I looked at my daughter.
And I realized something terrible.
Protecting her from the truth was impossible now.
The truth was already inside our house.
I knelt down.
“I don’t know everything yet.””
She cried quietly.
“But she wanted me gone.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I held back my own tears.
“Because some people don’t know how to love the right way.””
Emily looked toward the floor.
Then she asked the question I never wanted to hear.
“Did Mommy know?””
I froze.
Because that was the one question I couldn’t answer.
Michael looked away.
And that told me everything.
Claire knew.
Before she died.
She knew something.

And somehow…
she had tried to warn us.
