Chapter 13: The Voice Behind the Secret
Nobody spoke.
The recording had ended, but Claire’s voice stayed in the room.
Not because it was loud.
Because it was impossible.
For three years, I had replayed the night she died in my head.
The phone call I missed.
The hospital.
The police officer standing in my doorway.
The moment someone told me I was a single father.
I had always believed I knew the worst moment of my life.
But I was wrong.
The worst moment was realizing I never knew the truth.
I looked at Michael.
My brother.
My family.
The man who had been silent through every revelation.
“Say something.””
He didn’t move.
“Michael.””
His eyes stayed fixed on the recorder.
Then he whispered:
“It was him.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Michael closed his eyes.
“David.””
I frowned.
“Who is David?””
Nobody answered.
Then Michael looked at me.
“Your father’s lawyer.””
The room became silent again.
A lawyer.
Not a stranger.
Not someone random.
Someone who had access to everything.
The documents.
The family finances.
My father’s decisions.
Claire’s concerns.
“How long did you know?””
Michael swallowed.
“I suspected.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You knew.””
“I didn’t know for sure.””
“You knew enough to keep quiet.””
He looked away.
That was the answer.
I stepped back.
“I trusted you.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You were the person I called after Claire died.””
Michael looked at me.
“I know.””
“You held Emily while I couldn’t stop crying.””
“I know.””
“You told me you would protect us.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
The question came out quieter.
More painful.
“Why did you let me spend three years believing I failed her?””
Michael looked down.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of David?””
“Yes.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were scared, so you let me live a lie?””
He had no answer.
Rachel sat silently in the corner.
For the first time, I saw something different on her face.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Who is David really?”” I asked.
Michael took a deep breath.
“Your father trusted him for twenty years.””
“And?””
“He handled everything.””
“Everything?””
“Investments. Legal matters. Property.””
I looked at Rachel.
“And my family?””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
The pieces started falling into place.
Someone close enough to enter our lives.
Someone trusted enough that nobody questioned him.
Someone who could alter documents.
Someone who could manipulate my father.
Someone who could erase evidence.
“Why would he do this?””
Michael looked at the recorder.
“Because Claire found out.””
“Found out what?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“He was stealing from Dad’s company.””
I stared.
“How much?””
“Millions.””
The room went quiet.
Rachel spoke softly.
“Claire discovered the transfers.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“She came to me because she thought I was involved.””
“Were you?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“I was using information I shouldn’t have had, but I wasn’t stealing from your family.””
I almost laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
She looked down.
“But I know I deserve that.””
For the first time, she sounded completely honest.
Michael continued.
“Claire planned to expose David.””
“And he stopped her.””
Michael nodded.
“But he didn’t expect one thing.””
“What?””
“Your father.””
I frowned.
“Dad?””
“Dad started investigating after Claire died.””
I remembered the letter.
*I’m sorry I didn’t protect Claire when I had the chance.*
“He knew.””
“Yes.””
“But he died before he could tell me.””
Michael looked away.
“No.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“He didn’t die before telling you.””
I froze.
“What are you saying?””
Michael’s face turned pale.
“Dad tried.””
The room felt colder.
“What happened?””
Michael looked at the floor.
“David got to him first.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“My father’s death…”
Michael shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
The uncertainty was worse.
Because it meant there were still questions.
Still missing pieces.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice.
Older.
Calm.
“Daniel Hayes.””
I froze.
“Who is this?””
“You know who this is.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“David.””
A pause.
“I see you found the recordings.””
Nobody moved.
“You were listening?””
“I’ve been watching for a while.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
“Because you were getting too close.””
My blood ran cold.
“You killed Claire.””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“I ruined many things, Daniel. But Claire’s death was not my decision.””
“Then whose was it?””
Silence.
Then:
“Ask your brother.””
I looked at Michael.
The call ended.
Everyone stared at him.
Michael looked like he had just seen a ghost.
May you like
Because the question wasn’t whether David was lying.
The question was why he sounded afraid of Michael.
