Chapter 11: The Confession Behind Closed Doors
Rebecca stood in the doorway.
She didn’t scream.
She didn’t panic.
That frightened me more than anything.
Because innocent people react.
They ask questions.
They defend themselves.
Rebecca simply stared.
Like she had been expecting this moment.
“You broke into my apartment,” she said.
Her voice was calm.
I held up the recording device.
“You hid this.””
Her eyes moved toward it.
For the first time, fear appeared.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“What did you hear?””
I stepped forward.
“Enough.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You heard a conversation. Not the whole story.””
“Then tell me the whole story.””
She looked at Michael.
“You brought him here?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
I looked between them.
“You two knew each other before I met you.””
Neither responded.
That was answer enough.
“How?””
Rebecca looked away.
“Daniel…”
“How?””
Finally, she whispered:
“We worked together.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“Years ago.””
“Where?””
“At a financial company.””
I stared.
The pieces started connecting.
“You knew about my money.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Claire.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
“You knew about Emily.””
“Yes.””
Each answer felt like another door closing.
“How did you meet Claire?””
Rebecca’s face changed.
“I didn’t.””
“Then why was she talking to you?””
Silence.
I held up the recorder.
“Tell me.””
Rebecca sat down.
For the first time, she looked tired.
Not innocent.
Just tired.
“Claire found out.””
“About what?””
“About my past.””
“What past?””
She looked at me.
“The reason I needed your family.””
I felt sick.
“You married me for money.””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“I married you because I loved you.””
I stared.
“Then why all this?””
She covered her face.
“Because I was desperate.””
“Desperate enough to send away a child?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted Emily hurt.””
“But you planned it.””
“Yes.””
She admitted it.
No excuse.
No denial.
Just the truth.
“I thought once Emily was gone, everything would be easier.””
The words were worse than anger.
Because she said them like a fact.
Like Emily was a problem that could be removed.
I stepped back.
“You really believed that.””
“Yes.””
Michael looked disgusted.
“You don’t understand what you did.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“You’re the last person who gets to judge me.””
“What does that mean?””
She laughed.
“You helped create this.””
My eyes moved to Michael.
“What?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Tell him.””
Michael’s face changed.
“Rebecca.””
“Tell him.””
I felt the room become smaller.
“What is she talking about?””
Michael looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“What did you do?””
Michael swallowed.
“I introduced you to Rebecca.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I thought she was good for you.””
The betrayal was almost physical.
“You knew her.””
“Yes.””
“You knew her before Claire died?””
“No.””
“Before I met her?””
“Yes.””
I stared at my brother.
“You set this up?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Michael looked broken.
“I wanted you to be happy.””
I laughed.
“You wanted me happy.””
“I didn’t know what she was planning.””
“But you knew enough to hide things.””
Silence.
Then Rebecca spoke.
“Michael wasn’t the only one hiding things.””
I turned.
“What else?””
She looked at the recording.
“Claire knew about me.””
“Yes.””
“She also knew about Michael.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Rebecca looked at Michael.
“Tell him.””
He said nothing.
“Tell him what Claire discovered.””
I looked at my brother.
“Michael?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
He whispered:
“I borrowed money.””
I frowned.
“From who?””
Silence.
Then:
“Rebecca.””
The room went cold.
“You owed her?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Enough that she had control over me.””
I stared at him.
My brother.
My best friend.
The person I trusted.
All of them connected.
All of them carrying pieces of a secret.
“Why didn’t Claire tell me?””
Michael looked down.
“Because she was trying to protect you.””
I looked at the recorder.
The damaged recording.
The missing words.
“What happened the night she died?””
Nobody answered.
Then Rebecca finally spoke.
“I wasn’t supposed to be there.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
“I followed Claire.””
“Why?””
“Because she was going to expose me.””
The room went silent.
“Expose what?””
Rebecca looked at the floor.
“My real name.””
I stared.
“What?””
She looked up.
“The name you know isn’t mine.””
My heart raced.
“What is your real name?””
She whispered:
“Rachel Morgan.””
I had never heard the name.
But Michael had.
His face went white.
“Rachel…”
I looked at him.
“You know that name?””
He didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because suddenly, I realized:
May you like
Rebecca wasn’t the only person in my family’s story who had been hiding.
Michael had known exactly who she was.
