Chapter 5: The Brother Who Disappeared
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because of Rebecca.
Not because of the broken wedding.
Because of my father.
Because someone had just told me the one thing I never imagined:
My father’s signature might have been stolen.
I sat at the kitchen table while Emily slept upstairs.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
For years, this place had been filled with little sounds.
Emily running down the stairs.
Emily singing while brushing her teeth.
Emily asking impossible questions before bedtime.
Why do clouds move?
Why do people get older?
Why do dogs understand sadness?
I used to think those moments were ordinary.
Now I knew they were everything.
My phone sat on the table.
The unknown number hadn’t called again.
Only those two messages.
I stared at them for almost an hour.
Then I typed:
*Who are you?*
The reply came almost immediately.
*Someone who should have spoken sooner.*
I frowned.
*That doesn’t answer my question.*
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
*Meet me tomorrow. Alone.*
I hated mysterious messages.
I hated secrets.
And more than anything, I hated that my family seemed to be full of both.
The next morning, I took Emily to school.
She held my hand the entire walk from the car.
Usually, she ran ahead.
Usually, she complained that I walked too slowly.
Not today.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Are you sad?””
I looked down.
“Why do you ask?””
“Because you’re quiet.””
Children notice everything.
Especially children who have spent their lives afraid of losing people.
“I’m just thinking.””
“About Rebecca?””
I paused.
“Yes.””
Emily looked at the sidewalk.
“Did she not like me?””
The question hurt.
I knelt down.
“Emily.””
She looked at me.
“Some adults make mistakes because they forget what matters.””
She was quiet.
“Did I make her upset?””
“No.””
“Then why did she want me gone?””
I opened my mouth.
But I couldn’t find an answer that wouldn’t hurt her.
So I told her the truth.
“Because Rebecca wanted something different.””
Emily nodded slowly.
“Something without me.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“No.””
I held her shoulders.
“Listen carefully.””
She looked at me.
“You are not something people have to tolerate.””
Her eyes watered.
“You are someone people should be grateful for.””
She hugged me.
And I realized something.
Rebecca had spent months planning how to remove my daughter from my life.
But she never understood the most important thing.
Emily wasn’t just part of my life.
She was the reason I rebuilt it.
After dropping her off, I drove to the location from the message.
An old coffee shop downtown.
When I walked inside, I immediately recognized the person sitting in the corner.
My aunt.
Margaret.
My father’s younger sister.
She stood when she saw me.
“Daniel.””
“What are you doing here?””
She looked guilty.
“Trying to fix something I should have stopped years ago.””
I sat down.
“What happened?””
She looked around before speaking.
“Your father was sick.””
I frowned.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
She lowered her voice.
“He knew he was getting worse.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What does that have to do with Emily?””
“Everything.””
She pulled out an envelope.
“This was your father’s.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn’t you give me this before?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She looked at me.
“Your brother.””
The room seemed colder.
“Michael?””
She nodded.
“Your father discovered what Michael was doing.””
“What was he doing?””
My aunt looked down.
“Manipulating him.””
I froze.
“Explain.””
She took a deep breath.
“Michael convinced your father that you were destroying your own future.””
I clenched my jaw.
“He said I was too focused on Emily?””
“Yes.””
“That’s not a crime.””
“No.””
She looked at me sadly.
“But Michael didn’t stop there.””
I waited.
“He told your father that if something happened to him, Emily would have no protection.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He convinced your father to create legal documents.””
“Like the custody agreement?””
She nodded.
“But your father never wanted Emily gone.””
My chest tightened.
“Then why sign anything?””
“Because Michael told him it was temporary. He said it was only a backup plan.””
I looked at the envelope.
“What’s inside?””
My aunt pushed it toward me.
“Your father’s final letter.””
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The handwriting was immediately familiar.
My father’s.
The first line nearly broke me.
*Daniel, if you are reading this, something went very wrong.*
I kept reading.
*I need you to know one thing. I never wanted Emily taken away from you. Never.*
My vision blurred.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
*Your brother told me he was protecting you. But I discovered the truth too late. The documents were changed after I signed them.*
I stopped breathing.
Changed.
After he signed.
Someone had altered the agreement.
Someone had turned my father’s attempt to protect us into a weapon against my daughter.
I looked up at my aunt.
“Where is Michael now?””
Her face changed.
And I knew before she spoke that I wasn’t going to like the answer.
“He’s coming back.””
“When?””
She looked toward the window.
“Today.””
My phone suddenly rang.
I looked down.
One name appeared on the screen.
May you like
A name I hadn’t seen in two years.
*Michael.*
