Chapter 8: The Signature That Exposed Everything

For several seconds, Ethan couldn't move.

The auditorium was silent except for the faint clicking of cameras.

Rebecca placed her phone on the table.

"We need to suspend this meeting.""

Richard nodded.

"Agreed.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"What's going on?""

Rebecca looked at him.

"The transfer authorization appears to contain a signature attributed to the trust's authorized representative.""

Ethan swallowed.

"Then it's been approved.""

"Not necessarily.""

"What do you mean?""

"The document is being reviewed for authenticity.""

Daniel stood beside Grace.

"Whose signature is on it?""

Rebecca looked down.

"An authorized trustee's signature.""

Nathan immediately frowned.

"Which trustee?""

Rebecca read the name.

"Daniel Walker.""

Every head turned.

Michael looked at his older brother.

Daniel's face became completely still.

Ethan seized the opportunity.

"There. You see? The authorization exists.""

Daniel slowly stepped forward.

"I did not sign that document.""

Ethan's expression changed.

"Don't do this.""

"I'm telling you the truth.""

"You were involved in the original financing.""

"Yes.""

"Then your signature—"

"Is not on that document.""

Rebecca looked at the file.

"Mr. Walker, are you formally disputing the signature?""

Daniel didn't hesitate.

"Absolutely.""

Ethan laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous.""

Daniel turned toward him.

"Do you want me to explain exactly what happens when someone uses a trustee's signature without authorization?""

Ethan's smile disappeared.

Richard raised his hand.

"Nobody makes accusations without evidence. Rebecca, preserve the original file and notify counsel.""

Rebecca nodded.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Would you be willing to provide a verified specimen signature and cooperate with an independent examination?""

"Yes.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"There's no need to turn this into a criminal investigation.""

Michael stared at him.

"Why are you worried about that?""

Ethan ignored him.

He looked at Grace.

"Please.""

Grace didn't answer.

"Grace, we can settle this privately.""

She looked at the document.

"Did you know Daniel's signature was on it?""

"No.""

"Did you authorize anyone to sign for the trust?""

"No.""

"Then why are you asking me to settle it privately?""

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Because people make mistakes.""

Daniel's voice was cold.

"Forgery isn't a clerical mistake.""

Lauren stepped away from Ethan.

"Wait.""

Everyone turned.

She was staring at the document.

"That isn't the version I saw.""

Richard looked at her.

"What?""

Lauren pointed at the page.

"The authorization I reviewed yesterday didn't have Daniel's signature.""

Ethan turned sharply.

"Lauren.""

She looked at him.

"What?""

"Stop.""

But Lauren was already speaking.

"It had a different name.""

Rebecca looked at her.

"Whose?""

Lauren hesitated.

Then answered.

"Margaret Walker.""

Ethan's mother.

The room went silent.

Ethan stared at Lauren.

"You're mistaken.""

Lauren shook her head.

"No. I remember because I asked why your mother was involved.""

Daniel looked toward Grace.

Michael muttered something under his breath.

Nathan immediately opened his laptop.

"Wait.""

He searched the archived trust records.

Then he looked up.

"Margaret Walker was never an authorized trustee.""

Ethan's face hardened.

"How would you know?""

Nathan turned the laptop around.

"Because the trust's current trustee schedule is publicly recorded.""

Rebecca leaned closer.

"Please send me that.""

Nathan did.

Richard looked at Ethan.

"Mr. Walker, I suggest you stop speaking until your attorney arrives.""

Ethan looked around the room.

For the first time, he appeared genuinely frightened.

An hour later, the auditorium had been cleared.

The announcement was officially canceled.

Reporters waited outside the building.

Senior executives had been instructed not to comment.

Grace sat in a private conference room with her brothers, Richard, and Rebecca.

Caroline Hayes joined through video call.

Daniel had already provided a written statement disputing the signature.

The original transfer authorization was being preserved for independent examination.

Grace looked exhausted.

"Why would someone use Daniel's signature?""

Caroline answered carefully.

"We don't know yet. There are several possibilities. It could have been an unauthorized alteration, a fraudulent submission, or a document created by someone who believed they had authority when they did not.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Who had access?""

Rebecca opened a list.

"Walker Development's legal department, certain executive officers, and the external firm handling the proposed restructuring.""

Nathan studied the list.

"Who prepared the transfer?""

Rebecca looked at him.

"According to the filing record, a lawyer named Steven Cole.""

Nathan's eyebrows rose.

"Steven Cole?""

"Do you know him?""

Nathan nodded slowly.

"He was Ethan's personal attorney before the company hired its current legal team.""

Daniel frowned.

"Why would he be involved now?""

Rebecca answered.

"His firm prepared the initial draft of the Walker Family Reserve structure.""

Grace looked at the screen.

"Can we ask him?""

Caroline shook her head.

"Not until we've preserved the relevant evidence and determined the appropriate legal process. We should avoid direct contact that could compromise the review.""

Grace nodded.

She wasn't interested in making accusations without proof.

She wanted the truth.

And she wanted it documented.

Then Rebecca received another call.

She stepped into the hallway.

When she returned, her expression was serious.

"Richard, we have a problem.""

He looked up.

"What now?""

"Lauren's father has received a copy of an email chain from the original negotiations.""

Lauren, who had been sitting silently near the window, straightened.

"What email chain?""

Rebecca placed a printed page on the table.

"An exchange between Ethan and an outside adviser.""

Grace looked down.

The first email was dated four months earlier.

Ethan had written:

The current structure is too restrictive. I need a way to separate operational ownership from the trust's approval rights before the next expansion phase.

The adviser had replied:

We can explore a new holding company, but any transfer involving trust assets will require proper authorization.

Ethan's response was short.

Find a way to make it happen before Grace becomes aware of the arrangement.

Grace felt her stomach tighten.

She read the sentence again.

Before Grace becomes aware.

For months, he had been planning to keep her in the dark.

Michael stood.

"That settles it.""

Caroline spoke through the screen.

"It establishes that he was exploring a restructuring without informing the beneficiary. It does not, by itself, prove that any unlawful transfer occurred.""

Michael sat back down.

"Fine. But it tells us what kind of man we're dealing with.""

Lauren looked increasingly uncomfortable.

Richard turned toward her.

"Did you know about this?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Did Ethan tell you he intended to restructure the ownership?""

"He said we would create a new entity after the acquisition.""

"Did you know that the entity might receive assets subject to trust restrictions?""

Lauren hesitated.

"He said everything had been approved.""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"By whom?""

Lauren looked toward Ethan's empty chair.

"I don't know.""

Richard leaned back.

"Then you have been participating in a transaction you did not understand.""

Lauren's eyes filled.

"He's been lying to me too.""

Grace looked at her.

The words were almost absurd.

For weeks, Lauren had behaved as though she had taken something from Grace.

Now she was discovering that Ethan might have been using her as part of a much larger plan.

But Grace felt no satisfaction.

She simply felt tired.

"Did he tell you he was divorcing me?""

Lauren looked down.

"Yes.""

"Did he tell you we were separated?""

Lauren nodded.

"Yes.""

"We weren't.""

Lauren's eyes filled further.

"I know that now.""

Grace looked at her for several seconds.

Then she asked the question that had been bothering her.

"Did you know I was pregnant when you came to my house?""

Lauren's lips trembled.

"I knew that evening.""

Grace looked away.

"Then you knew exactly what you were doing.""

Lauren didn't answer.

Richard stood.

"Lauren, I think you should leave.""

"Daddy—"

"Now.""

She picked up her handbag.

Before leaving, she turned toward Grace.

"I didn't think it would end like this.""

Grace's voice was quiet.

"Neither did I.""

Lauren left.

The conference room door closed.

Michael exhaled.

"At least she's finally understanding what she did.""

Daniel looked at Grace.

"Are you all right?""

She nodded.

But her hand was trembling.

Daniel reached for it.

"Come here.""

She moved beside him.

For a moment, she rested her head against his shoulder.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

Grace, this is Steven Cole. I need to speak with you urgently. Your husband isn't the only person involved in the transfer. There is something about the original trust agreement that your brothers haven't told you.

Grace stared at the screen.

Nathan noticed her expression.

"What is it?""

She handed him the phone.

He read the message.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"Do you know this man?""

Daniel nodded.

"He's Ethan's former attorney.""

Michael frowned.

"Why is he contacting Grace?""

Nathan looked at the message again.

"Because he claims there's something we don't know.""

Caroline spoke through the screen.

"Do not respond until we establish his identity and preserve the message.""

Grace nodded.

But another message appeared.

I have a copy of the original letter from Eleanor Walker. It explains why Grace was named beneficiary and why the company was never supposed to belong to Ethan outright.

Daniel slowly stood.

"What letter?""

Grace looked at him.

"You've never seen it?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

Nathan stared at the phone.

"Then what did Grandma write?""

A third message appeared.

Please don't let Ethan destroy the original documents. He knows what they contain.

Grace looked toward the conference room door.

Outside, reporters were still waiting.

May you like

Inside, her brothers were finally beginning to understand that the mystery behind Ethan's company went deeper than a missing signature.

And somewhere in Charlotte, a former attorney was holding a document that could change everything.
