Chapter 2: Three Brothers, One Promise

The first brother arrived eleven minutes later.

Grace heard the sound of tires against the gravel driveway.

Then a car door slammed.

She stood up so quickly that the chair scraped against the hardwood floor.

The doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then someone knocked.

"Grace!""

Daniel's voice.

She hurried toward the entrance.

When she opened the door, her oldest brother stood beneath the porch light in a charcoal overcoat, his dark hair slightly disheveled.

Daniel Walker was forty-one.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and rarely raised his voice.

He didn't need to.

People who worked with him knew that his silence was often more intimidating than someone else's anger.

But the moment he saw his sister's face, his expression changed.

"Who did this?""

Grace tried to smile.

"Daniel—"

"Who?""

His eyes moved to the red mark spreading across her cheek.

Then they dropped to her hand resting over her stomach.

He stepped inside.

"Grace, sit down.""

"I'm okay.""

"No, you're not.""

He closed the door behind him and gently guided her toward the living room.

When she sat, Daniel crouched in front of her.

"Did he hit you once?""

Grace nodded.

"Did he threaten you?""

"No.""

"Did he touch your stomach?""

"No.""

Daniel exhaled slowly.

"All right. We're going to get you checked by a doctor.""

"Daniel, please don't make this bigger than it is.""

He looked at her.

"Your husband slapped you while you're pregnant. Tell me exactly how small you think this is.""

Grace lowered her eyes.

Daniel took her hand.

"Listen to me. You don't have to protect him from us.""

That was when she started crying.

Not loudly.

Just a few tears slipping down her cheeks.

Daniel stood and pulled her into his arms.

For a few seconds, he held her the way he had when she was eight years old and had fallen from her bicycle.

Then his phone rang.

Michael.

Daniel answered.

"Where are you?""

"Two minutes away," Michael replied.

"Nathan's behind me.""

"Come straight in.""

A pause.

"How bad?""

Daniel looked at Grace.

"Bad enough.""

"Understood.""

The call ended.

Grace wiped her face.

"Daniel, promise me something.""

He pulled a chair closer.

"What?""

"Don't do anything stupid.""

He looked almost offended.

"Grace, I've been stupid before. I'm not planning to make it a habit.""

She gave a small, exhausted laugh.

"You're not funny.""

"I'm a little funny.""

The front door opened again.

Michael entered first.

At thirty-eight, he was the most physically imposing of the three brothers. He had a strong build, a closely trimmed beard, and a habit of walking into rooms as though he had already noticed every exit.

He was also the brother who had once driven six hours through a snowstorm because Grace had called him after a flat tire.

Nathan followed him.

Thirty-four.

The youngest, but arguably the sharpest.

Where Daniel was measured and Michael was direct, Nathan was observant. He noticed things people assumed nobody had seen.

Tonight, he noticed the ultrasound photograph on the dining table.

He picked it up.

"Is this...?""

Grace nodded.

Nathan's expression softened.

"You're having a baby.""

"Seventeen weeks.""

He smiled briefly.

"Congratulations, little sister.""

Then he noticed her cheek.

The smile disappeared.

"Was it Ethan?""

Grace nodded again.

Michael stopped walking.

"Where is he?""

"Michael," Daniel warned.

"I'm asking a question.""

"He left," Grace said.

Michael looked toward the front door.

"Good. Because I don't know if I can stand looking at him right now.""

Nathan placed the ultrasound photograph carefully on the table.

Then he walked toward Grace and knelt beside her.

"Does the baby feel okay?""

"I think so.""

"Think so?""

"I haven't had any pain.""

Nathan nodded.

"Then let's not guess. We'll get you checked.""

Michael pulled out his phone.

"I'll call the private clinic.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Call her obstetrician first. We need someone who knows her medical history.""

Grace looked at them.

"Please, I don't want everyone panicking.""

Michael crouched beside her chair.

"Grace, look at me.""

She did.

"You could call me at three in the morning because you ran out of coffee, and I'd still come.""

He paused.

"This is not coffee.""

She laughed through her tears.

Nathan smiled.

"He's right. Although I would like to formally request that you stop calling us only when something goes wrong.""

Grace shook her head.

"You all worry too much.""

Daniel stood.

"That's because we know you.""

For several minutes, the brothers focused on making sure Grace was comfortable.

Daniel called her doctor.

Nathan brought her a glass of water.

Michael checked the locks and turned off the candles.

Then his eyes landed on the dining table.

Four plates.

One untouched anniversary dinner.

A bottle of expensive wine.

A small gift bag.

He picked up the bag.

"What's this?""

Grace looked away.

"Ethan's present.""

Michael opened it.

Inside was a leather watch case containing a personalized watch.

A small inscription was engraved on the back.

To Ethan. Five years down, forever to go. Love, Grace.

Michael stared at it.

Then he closed the case.

"I need a minute.""

Daniel gave him a warning look.

"Stay here.""

"I'm not going anywhere.""

Nathan picked up the phone bill Grace had left beside the kitchen counter.

He had noticed several printed pages underneath a grocery receipt.

"Grace, what's this?""

She hesitated.

"Nothing.""

Nathan unfolded the pages.

His eyes moved across the columns.

"These are call records.""

Grace nodded.

"I found them a few days ago.""

"Whose numbers?""

"Ethan's and Lauren's.""

Nathan studied the dates.

"How long?""

"Six weeks. Maybe longer.""

"Did you confront him?""

"Not until tonight.""

Nathan placed the papers on the table.

"Did you know anything about Lauren before this?""

Grace looked at him.

"She's a senior consultant at Walker Development. She works on acquisitions.""

"That's what Ethan told you?""

"Yes.""

Nathan's expression became thoughtful.

"Interesting.""

Daniel looked over.

"What?""

Nathan tapped the paper.

"Nothing yet.""

Michael returned from the hallway.

"Doctor says she can come in for an examination in forty minutes.""

Daniel nodded.

"Good.""

Grace stood.

"I need to change.""

Daniel helped her toward the stairs.

"Take your time.""

As they reached the landing, Grace turned.

"Daniel?""

"Yes?""

"Please don't hate Ethan because of me.""

Daniel looked at his sister for a long moment.

"Grace, I don't need your permission to dislike a man who hits you.""

She lowered her eyes.

He softened.

"But I promise we won't do anything reckless.""

Downstairs, Michael picked up the wineglass Lauren had used.

"She drank from Grace's glass.""

Nathan glanced up from his phone.

"That's not our biggest problem.""

Michael frowned.

"What do you mean?""

Nathan turned the screen toward him.

"I searched her name.""

Michael leaned closer.

"Lauren Pierce?""

"Yes.""

"And?""

Nathan's face had gone unusually still.

"She isn't just a consultant.""

Daniel came down the stairs before Nathan could continue.

"What did you find?""

Nathan turned the phone around.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

Lauren stood beside a group of people at a corporate event, wearing a white suit and holding a glass of champagne.

Beside her was a man Daniel recognized immediately.

He had seen that face on television, in business magazines, and on the cover of financial publications.

But it wasn't Lauren's photograph that caught his attention.

It was the name beneath it.

*Lauren Pierce — Director, Pierce Capital Holdings.*

Daniel read it twice.

"Pierce Capital?""

Nathan nodded.

Michael leaned against the counter.

"Isn't that the firm that tried to acquire the Southgate properties?""

"Yes," Nathan replied.

Daniel looked at Grace's brothers' phones, then at the photograph.

"How did Ethan meet her?""

"Apparently, through the Southgate acquisition.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Michael folded his arms.

"Why?""

"Because Pierce Capital doesn't send ordinary consultants to negotiate acquisitions of that size.""

Nathan scrolled.

"That's not all.""

He opened another document.

It was an article about a corporate restructuring that had taken place nearly two years earlier.

The article mentioned Pierce Capital's founding family.

Nathan enlarged the photograph.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"Do you recognize the woman standing behind Lauren?""

Daniel stared.

His expression changed.

"That's her.""

Michael frowned.

"Who?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

He looked toward the staircase, where Grace was slowly coming down wearing a cream sweater and holding her coat.

"Grace," he said carefully.

"Do you know Lauren's full legal name?""

Grace shook her head.

"Just Lauren Pierce.""

Nathan turned his phone toward her.

"Have you ever seen this woman before?""

Grace studied the photograph.

"No.""

Daniel took a breath.

"Her name is Lauren Elizabeth Pierce.""

Grace nodded.

"Okay.""

"She's the daughter of Richard Pierce.""

Grace's eyes widened slightly.

"Richard Pierce? The investor?""

Michael looked between them.

"Somebody explain.""

Daniel walked toward the window.

"Richard Pierce built Pierce Capital Holdings. He's one of the biggest private investment figures in the country.""

Nathan added, "And Lauren isn't just an employee. She's his only daughter.""

Grace looked confused.

"Why does that matter?""

Daniel turned around.

"Because Ethan has been negotiating with her family.""

Grace's fingers tightened around her coat.

"Is that bad?""

Nathan hesitated.

"It could be.""

"Why?""

Daniel looked at his youngest brother.

Nathan answered.

"Because the Southgate deal involves more than money. It involves the company your husband thinks he owns.""

Grace frowned.

"What does that have to do with me?""

The three brothers exchanged a look.

Daniel approached her.

"Grace, there's something about your marriage that Ethan may never have understood.""

She stared at him.

"What?""

Before Daniel could answer, Nathan's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the notification.

Then he opened an email.

His eyes moved across the screen.

A moment later, he looked up.

"Daniel.""

"What?""

Nathan turned the phone toward him.

The subject line read:

*URGENT — WALKER DEVELOPMENT: CHANGE OF CONTROL AND BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP REVIEW.*

Daniel's face hardened.

Michael stepped closer.

"What's going on?""

Nathan looked at Grace.

"Your husband has been trying to sign a major agreement without understanding who actually controls the investment structure behind his company.""

Grace shook her head.

"Ethan owns Walker Development.""

Daniel slowly looked at her.

"Does he?""

And for the first time that night, Grace realized that her brothers weren't merely angry about the slap.

They had discovered something much bigger.

May you like

Something Ethan had apparently been hiding.

Something Lauren might not have known either.
