Chapter 1: The Woman in My Closet

The strangest part wasn't finding another woman's lingerie beneath my bed.

It was watching my husband kick the footboard to cover the sound of her phone.

I had just returned from an ultrasound appointment with our daughter's picture in my hand.

Damon was shirtless, pulling up his pants.

"I'm changing because I spilled coffee," he insisted.

There was no coffee.

Only a rumpled bed, a champagne-colored lace camisole, and a blue sapphire charm I recognized immediately.

Claire.

My closest friend for twelve years.

She had once shown me that exact camisole over lunch, laughing as she explained how much Owen had paid for it.

Now her hand was gripping the sleeve of my cream winter coat inside my closet.

Her vintage diamond ring was unmistakable.

I stood in the bedroom doorway, one hand resting against my pregnant stomach, the other holding the ultrasound photograph.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Damon's expression changed three times.

First surprise.

Then panic.

Finally, something that looked almost like irritation.

"Emily?"" he said.

I looked at him.

"Where's your shirt?""

He glanced toward the floor.

"I told you. Coffee.""

I looked at the spotless white duvet.

"Where's the coffee?""

He swallowed.

"I cleaned it up.""

"With what? A magic wand?""

"Don't start.""

That was what he said.

Not I'm sorry.

Not What are you doing here?

Just don't start.

I lowered my eyes to the ultrasound photograph.

Our daughter was facing sideways, one tiny hand raised near her cheek. The technician had printed two copies because I had told her Damon couldn't make the appointment.

I'd wanted to surprise him.

I'd planned to place the photograph inside a small gift box, tie it with a pink ribbon, and tell him that our little girl had his nose.

Instead, I was standing in our bedroom looking at another woman's underwear.

"How was the appointment?"" Damon asked suddenly.

His voice had become artificially warm.

I almost laughed.

"You tell me.""

"What?""

"You were supposed to be there.""

"I explained that. The client meeting ran over.""

"Right.""

He walked toward me, reaching for the ultrasound photograph.

"Let me see her.""

I pulled it back slightly.

Something flickered across his face.

"Emily, come on.""

I handed him the picture.

He stared at it for two seconds.

"Beautiful," he said.

Then he placed it on the dresser without another word.

Behind him, the closet door remained open by about three inches.

I could see the cream fabric of my winter coat.

And beneath it, a pale hand.

Claire's hand.

Her phone vibrated again.

The sound was tiny.

Almost insignificant.

But Damon heard it.

His head snapped toward the closet.

Mine didn't move.

"What's that?"" I asked.

"Nothing.""

"Sounds like a phone.""

"Probably yours.""

"My phone is in my bag.""

He stared at me.

I stared back.

The silence stretched.

Then he forced a laugh.

"You're tired. You've had a long morning. Why don't you sit down?""

I had known Damon for six years.

I'd watched him lie to clients, negotiate contracts, and talk his way out of parking tickets.

I knew the way his left eyebrow moved when he invented something.

I knew how he rubbed the back of his neck when he was uncomfortable.

And I knew he was terrified.

Not because he'd been caught cheating.

Because he hadn't expected me to come home.

"Actually," I said, "I'm thirsty.""

He blinked.

"What?""

"Could you get me some ice water?""

He looked toward the closet again.

"Of course.""

"And maybe a little lemon?""

"Sure.""

He hesitated.

Then he kissed my forehead.

The gesture made my skin crawl.

"Don't move around too much," he said.

"You should be resting.""

I watched him leave.

The moment his footsteps reached the staircase, I took out my phone.

First, I photographed the camisole.

Then the sapphire charm.

Then the closet.

I zoomed in on the hand gripping my coat sleeve.

The vintage diamond ring caught the light.

There was no mistaking it.

Claire had inherited that ring from her grandmother. She wore it on her right hand and constantly complained that its setting caught on expensive fabrics.

I had even helped her choose the jeweler who restored it.

I took three more photographs.

Then I noticed something else.

A black leather document folder sat on the upper shelf of my closet.

It wasn't mine.

I recognized it because Damon carried the same brand to work.

I reached up and pulled it down.

Inside were several printed documents, a folded envelope, and what looked like a bank statement.

I didn't have time to examine everything.

But one page caught my attention.

My name.

Emily Carter.

Below it was my date of birth, my home address, and a signature that looked almost like mine.

I frowned.

It was a property authorization form.

Our house.

The house my grandmother had left me before she died.

The house Damon had insisted we keep in my name because it was "better for taxes.""

I turned the page.

There was another signature.

Damon's.

And another.

Claire's.

My stomach tightened.

Why would Claire be signing documents connected to my house?

I heard the kitchen faucet turn on downstairs.

I quickly photographed every page and returned the folder to its original position.

Then I noticed something tucked behind the documents.

A small white envelope.

On the front, in Claire's handwriting, were two words.

*For Damon.*

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Claire and Damon stood together outside a restaurant, smiling at the camera.

But that wasn't what made my fingers go cold.

Claire was holding a champagne glass.

Damon had one arm around her waist.

And she was visibly pregnant.

The date printed on the back was from seven months earlier.

I stared at the photograph.

Seven months.

I'd been pregnant for only four months.

Which meant Claire had been pregnant before I was.

A floorboard creaked behind me.

I turned.

Damon stood in the doorway holding a glass of water.

His face had lost all its color.

"What are you doing?"" he asked.

I slowly slipped the photograph into my pocket.

"Looking for my coat.""

He glanced at the closet.

Then at my hand.

"Emily, that's my folder.""

"Is it?""

"Yes.""

"Why is my name on it?""

He set the glass down too hard.

Water spilled over the rim.

"Give me that.""

I didn't move.

"Why is Claire's signature on a document about my house?""

His jaw tightened.

"You're misunderstanding something.""

"Then explain it.""

He stepped closer.

"Not now.""

"Why not?""

"Because you're pregnant, and you're getting emotional.""

I looked at him.

There it was.

The oldest trick in his collection.

Make me doubt my reaction instead of questioning his behavior.

I took a slow breath.

"Where is Claire?""

He said nothing.

I glanced at the closet.

Then back at him.

"Damon.""

He closed his eyes.

For one moment, I thought he might tell the truth.

Instead, he said, "She came over to discuss something about work.""

"In my underwear?""

His expression hardened.

"Don't be vulgar.""

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

I was standing in my own bedroom, holding an ultrasound photograph, while my husband criticized my language.

Then his phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"Who is it?"" I asked.

"Nobody.""

"Answer it.""

He turned the phone facedown.

I took my water and walked past him.

"Emily, wait.""

I stopped at the doorway.

"What?""

He looked as if he wanted to say something.

But whatever it was, he swallowed it.

"Let's talk tonight.""

I nodded.

"Of course.""

I went downstairs.

I didn't cry.

I didn't scream.

I didn't throw anything.

I sat at the kitchen island and opened my phone.

The first thing I did was send the photographs to a new email account Damon didn't know existed.

The second thing I did was message Claire.

*Emily:* Hey, sweetheart. I found something of yours upstairs. Can you come by tomorrow?

Three dots appeared almost immediately.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

*Claire:* What did you find?

I looked at the screen.

My best friend of twelve years had not asked what time she could come.

She hadn't asked whether I was okay.

She had asked what I'd found.

I typed slowly.

*Emily:* Your blue sapphire charm.

Her response arrived within seconds.

*Claire:* Oh my God. I must have dropped it last time I visited. Please don't let Owen see it. He'll ask questions.

I stared at those words.

Owen.

Her husband.

The man who had paid for the camisole.

The man who had taken her on their anniversary trip to Italy.

The man who had called me two weeks earlier to ask which flowers Claire liked best because he wanted to surprise her.

I typed one final message.

*Emily:* Don't worry. I won't tell him anything.

Then I put my phone down.

Upstairs, a door opened.

Footsteps crossed the hallway.

Damon appeared at the bottom of the stairs, now fully dressed.

He had changed his shirt.

He had shaved.

He looked perfectly normal.

"Are you hungry?"" he asked.

I glanced at the clock.

It was nearly noon.

"Not really.""

He approached and placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Listen. I know things have been stressful lately.""

I looked at his wedding ring.

"Have they?""

He sighed.

"Work. The baby. Money. Everything.""

"Money?""

He paused.

"Just generally.""

I remembered the folder.

The property authorization.

Claire's signature.

And the photograph of her pregnant seven months earlier.

"Maybe we should review our finances," I said.

His hand immediately left my shoulder.

"Why?""

"Because we're having a baby.""

"Emily, I handle the finances.""

"I know.""

"Then trust me.""

I smiled.

It was a small, tired smile.

"Of course.""

He kissed my cheek and walked toward the living room.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*Unknown:* You need to stop looking through Damon's things.

I stared at it.

Then another message arrived.

*Unknown:* You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into.

I slowly turned toward the staircase.

The bedroom door was closed.

Damon was downstairs.

Claire was supposed to be in my closet.

And whoever had just texted me knew exactly what I'd found.

I typed back one question.

*Emily:* Who is this?

The reply came immediately.

*Unknown:* Ask your husband what happened to the baby he lost last year.

My hand went numb.

I read it again.

Then again.

Last year?

Damon had never told me he'd lost a baby.

I looked toward the living room.

He was standing beside the window, speaking quietly into his phone.

And when he noticed me watching him, he ended the call.

For the first time that morning, I felt genuinely afraid.

May you like

Because whatever was happening in my bedroom was only the beginning.

And apparently, my husband had been hiding something long before Claire ever climbed into our bed.
