Chapter 5: The Meeting That Changed Everything

At 11:00 a.m., Grace entered the headquarters of Pierce Capital Holdings.

She wore a simple cream-colored dress beneath a tailored navy coat.

No expensive jewelry.

No designer handbag.

Her hair was tied back, and a faint bruise remained visible beneath her makeup.

Daniel walked beside her.

Michael followed a few steps behind.

Nathan carried a leather folder containing copies of the trust documents.

At reception, a young woman looked up.

"Good morning. How may I help you?""

Daniel answered.

"We're here to see Rebecca Collins.""

The receptionist checked her computer.

"Of course. Ms. Walker?""

Grace nodded.

The receptionist's expression changed slightly.

"Yes. They are expecting you.""

She picked up the telephone.

"Ms. Collins, the Walker family is here.""

A moment later, the elevator doors opened.

Rebecca stepped out.

She was in her early forties, dressed in a charcoal suit, with a tablet tucked beneath one arm.

"Mrs. Walker?""

Grace extended her hand.

"Yes.""

"Thank you for coming. Please follow me.""

They entered a conference room overlooking the Charlotte skyline.

Richard Pierce was already seated at the far end of the table.

Lauren stood near the window.

The moment she saw Grace, her expression tightened.

She looked at Grace's dress.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Michael and Nathan.

"You're bringing your entire family to a business meeting?""

Michael pulled out a chair.

"Is that a problem?""

Lauren gave him a cold look.

"Not at all.""

Richard stood.

"Mrs. Walker. I'm Richard Pierce.""

Grace shook his hand.

"It's nice to meet you.""

He studied her face briefly.

Then his eyes settled on the faint mark near her cheek.

His expression became serious.

"I understand there was an unfortunate incident at your home last night.""

Grace didn't look at Lauren.

"Yes.""

Richard nodded.

"I'm sorry that happened.""

Lauren shifted uncomfortably.

"Daddy, we're here to discuss the acquisition.""

Richard didn't turn toward her.

"We are.""

Rebecca opened the folder.

"Let's begin with the original financing agreement.""

Nathan placed his copy on the table.

"Before we do, I'd like to clarify something. My sister isn't here to negotiate away her rights without independent legal advice.""

Rebecca nodded.

"That is entirely appropriate.""

Daniel added, "We have retained counsel to review the documentation.""

Lauren rolled her eyes.

"Nobody is trying to steal anything from her.""

Michael looked directly at her.

"Then this should be a very easy meeting.""

Richard gestured toward the seats.

"Please.""

Everyone sat.

Rebecca began explaining the ownership structure.

The initial capital.

The trust's role.

The contractual provisions.

The distinction between operational management and approval rights over extraordinary transactions.

Grace listened carefully.

She asked questions whenever she didn't understand something.

At one point, she stopped Rebecca.

"Could you explain that last part again?""

Rebecca nodded.

"Certainly. The trust does not automatically control every decision made by Walker Development. However, the original agreement gives the trust certain protections if the company attempts to transfer a controlling interest or make specific material changes.""

Grace looked at the document.

"So if Ethan sells the company, he needs the trust's authorization?""

"Subject to the precise terms and any applicable amendments, yes.""

Lauren leaned forward.

"Which is why we're trying to resolve this quickly.""

Grace looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because my family has already spent considerable time and money on this transaction.""

"Then why wasn't I informed?""

Lauren opened her mouth.

Richard interrupted.

"That is a fair question.""

Lauren turned toward him.

"Daddy—"

"Let her finish.""

Grace looked at Rebecca.

"Was I supposed to be informed when the acquisition discussions started?""

Rebecca considered her answer.

"Given the trust's approval rights, the beneficiary's interests should have been properly considered during the process.""

Grace nodded.

"Then why was my name omitted from the proposed agreement?""

Nobody answered.

Lauren finally spoke.

"Ethan told us you weren't involved.""

Grace looked at her.

"And you believed him?""

Lauren's jaw tightened.

"He is the chief executive.""

"That doesn't make everything he says true.""

Michael lowered his eyes to hide a smile.

Richard remained serious.

"Lauren, did you know Grace was married to Ethan when you began working with him?""

Lauren stiffened.

"That's personal.""

"It became relevant when you entered a home and participated in a confrontation with his wife.""

"Daddy, please.""

Richard's voice sharpened.

"Answer the question.""

Lauren looked at Grace.

"Yes. I knew.""

"And you continued the relationship?""

Lauren said nothing.

Richard leaned back.

"Understood.""

Grace looked down at the papers.

There was something she wanted to ask.

Something that had been bothering her since the previous evening.

"Mr. Pierce?""

Richard turned.

"Yes?""

"Does your daughter know what happened at my house?""

Richard glanced at Lauren.

"I understand that there was an argument.""

Grace's voice remained steady.

"Your daughter stood beside my husband while he slapped me. She watched him do it. Then she told me I was no longer wanted in my own marriage.""

Lauren's face turned red.

"That's not how it happened.""

Michael immediately sat forward.

"Then tell us how it happened.""

Lauren pointed at Grace.

"She was screaming at me.""

Grace stared at her.

"I asked you whether you were having an affair with my husband.""

"You were being hostile.""

"I asked you to leave my home.""

"You don't own the entire world, Grace.""

Michael laughed once.

"No. But she does have the right to ask you to leave her dining room.""

Richard raised his hand.

"Enough.""

Lauren turned toward her father.

"She is making this sound like I attacked her.""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Did Ethan strike her?""

Lauren hesitated.

The silence answered the question.

Richard slowly turned toward Rebecca.

"Make a note of that.""

Lauren stared at him.

"You're actually doing this?""

Richard ignored her.

He turned toward Grace.

"Mrs. Walker, I want to make something clear. Whatever happened between you, Ethan, and my daughter, I will not allow it to influence the integrity of this transaction.""

Grace nodded.

"Thank you.""

"However, I also want to know whether your husband deliberately concealed your interest in the company.""

Grace looked at the documents.

"So do I.""

Rebecca opened another folder.

"We have reviewed several communications supplied during the preliminary due diligence process.""

Lauren frowned.

"Which communications?""

Rebecca removed three printed emails.

"These were submitted by Walker Development's legal representative.""

She passed the first one to Richard.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Richard read them.

His expression gradually darkened.

Lauren leaned forward.

"What is it?""

Rebecca answered.

"Mr. Walker repeatedly represented that no family trust or third-party beneficiary held approval rights affecting the proposed sale.""

Lauren looked at Grace.

"That could have been a misunderstanding.""

Nathan spoke for the first time.

"Three separate representations?""

Lauren turned toward him.

"Who are you?""

"Nathan Walker.""

"I wasn't asking for your opinion.""

Nathan smiled faintly.

"That's unfortunate. You're getting it anyway.""

Richard placed the emails on the table.

"Lauren, I want you to explain something.""

She swallowed.

"What?""

"Did Ethan ever tell you that his company had been financed through a family trust?""

Lauren hesitated.

"He said he received private investment.""

"That's not what I asked.""

"He said it was an early-stage financing arrangement.""

Richard looked at Rebecca.

"Have we verified whether the beneficial ownership was disclosed in the original acquisition materials?""

"Not completely. We are still examining the records.""

Richard nodded.

Then he looked at Grace.

"Mrs. Walker, may I ask whether you have any intention of exercising your rights?""

Grace looked at her brothers.

Daniel didn't answer for her.

Michael didn't either.

Nathan simply closed his folder.

For the first time in her life, Grace understood that the decision was hers.

Not her husband's.

Not Lauren's.

Not even her brothers'.

Hers.

"I don't know yet," she said honestly.

"I need to understand everything first.""

Richard nodded.

"That's reasonable.""

Lauren let out an irritated breath.

"How long is that going to take?""

Grace looked at her.

"However long it takes.""

"We have a deadline.""

"Then you should have checked the documents before setting one.""

The room went silent.

Daniel looked down.

Michael's mouth twitched.

Nathan actually smiled.

Lauren stared at Grace as though she had never heard her speak that way.

Then Richard slowly nodded.

"Well said.""

He turned toward Rebecca.

"Freeze the transaction review until independent counsel completes the ownership verification.""

Lauren stood.

"You cannot be serious!""

Richard looked at her.

"I am.""

"You're letting her hold up a billion-dollar transaction?""

"I'm preventing this firm from purchasing something under potentially misleading representations.""

Lauren grabbed her handbag.

"Unbelievable.""

She walked toward the door.

But before she reached it, Grace spoke.

"Lauren.""

Lauren stopped.

"What?""

Grace looked at her.

"Why did you come into my house last night?""

Lauren gave a bitter laugh.

"Because Ethan wanted me there.""

"Did you think I would simply disappear?""

Lauren looked at her for several seconds.

Then she said something that made the room go completely still.

"Ethan told me you were already separated. He said you were only staying in the house because you had nowhere else to go.""

Grace felt her stomach tighten.

"What?""

Lauren shrugged.

"He said your marriage was over months ago.""

Grace looked at Daniel.

Then back at Lauren.

"Did he tell you I was pregnant?""

Lauren didn't answer.

Grace's voice became almost a whisper.

"Did he tell you before or after he invited you to my anniversary dinner?""

Lauren looked away.

Richard stood.

"Lauren, sit down.""

But she didn't.

She walked out.

The door slammed behind her.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Rebecca placed another document in front of Grace.

"There's something else you should see.""

Grace looked down.

It was a draft agreement between Ethan and Pierce Capital.

A clause had been highlighted.

The clause described a proposed management restructuring following the acquisition.

Grace read it twice.

Then she looked at Rebecca.

"What does this mean?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"It means Mr. Walker had proposed that, after the transaction, certain existing company interests would be transferred into a new holding structure.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Without the trust's approval?""

"That's what we're investigating.""

Nathan looked at the document.

"Who would control the new structure?""

Rebecca turned the page.

The answer was written beneath a section titled Proposed Executive Beneficiaries.

Grace read the first name.

Ethan Walker.

Then the second.

Lauren Pierce.

She felt the room tilt.

Her husband hadn't simply been planning to leave her.

He had been planning a future in which Lauren would receive a position and financial interest in the company.

A future built using assets whose underlying rights might belong to Grace's family trust.

Michael pushed his chair back.

"That man is unbelievable.""

Daniel's voice was cold.

"How long has this been planned?""

Rebecca looked at the date.

"At least four months.""

Grace stared at the paper.

Four months.

Four months before her anniversary.

Four months before she discovered the affair.

Four months before Ethan slapped her.

And then she noticed something else.

A handwritten note in the margin.

It was Ethan's handwriting.

The note read:

Grace will not challenge this. She doesn't understand the structure.

Grace slowly placed the document on the table.

She didn't cry.

Instead, she looked at Rebecca.

"I want a complete copy of everything.""

"Of course.""

"And I want an independent lawyer.""

"That is advisable.""

Grace nodded.

May you like

Then she stood.

"Because I think my husband has been planning to take something that was never his to give away.""
