Chapter 4: The Woman Lauren Pierce Was Never Supposed to Challenge
At 7:30 the following morning, Lauren Pierce walked into the executive conference room at Pierce Capital Holdings wearing a white designer suit and a smile that suggested she had already won.
She had barely slept.
Ethan had called her twice after leaving Grace's house, but she had ignored both calls. She was too busy imagining what the next few months would look like.
A new house.
A new position.
A husband who no longer had to pretend he was going home to someone he loved.
Most importantly, she would finally stop being a secret.
Her father sat at the head of the conference table.
Richard Pierce was sixty-four, silver-haired, and famous for making decisions without raising his voice. He had built Pierce Capital from a small investment firm into a multibillion-dollar financial institution.
He also had a reputation for never tolerating dishonesty.
"You're late," he said.
Lauren placed her handbag beside her chair.
"Good morning to you too, Daddy.""
Richard didn't smile.
"Sit down.""
She took her seat.
Across the table sat three senior executives and two attorneys. A thick folder rested in front of each person.
Lauren frowned.
"What's this?""
Her father's attorney, Rebecca Collins, opened the folder.
"The Walker Development acquisition.""
Lauren nodded.
"Good. Ethan is ready to sign.""
Richard slowly removed his glasses.
"Is he?""
"Yes. We discussed the final terms last night.""
"Did you discuss the beneficial ownership structure?""
Lauren paused.
"Of course.""
Rebecca looked up.
"Then perhaps you can explain why the proposed agreement identifies Ethan Walker as the sole controlling shareholder.""
Lauren frowned.
"Because he is.""
Richard placed his glasses on the table.
"Lauren, I want you to be very careful with your next answer.""
She looked between them.
"What is going on?""
Rebecca slid a document across the polished table.
"The original financing agreement for Walker Development contains a trust-backed ownership arrangement. The current proposal does not adequately account for the trust's approval rights.""
Lauren skimmed the page.
Her eyebrows drew together.
"Northbridge Heritage Holdings?""
"Correct," Rebecca said.
"I know that name.""
"Then you should also know that it is connected to the Eleanor Walker Family Trust.""
Lauren nodded impatiently.
"Fine. So we need another signature. That's not a problem.""
Richard leaned forward.
"Whose signature?""
Lauren looked down.
Then she saw the name.
*Grace Eleanor Walker.*
For several seconds, she didn't move.
Then she laughed.
It was a short, disbelieving sound.
"No.""
Rebecca remained expressionless.
"Yes.""
"That's Ethan's wife.""
"Correct.""
"She's a housewife.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"That is not a legal classification.""
Lauren stared at him.
"She has nothing to do with the company.""
Rebecca turned another page.
"According to the documents, she is the principal beneficiary of the family trust that provided the original capital. Certain extraordinary transactions require authorization under the existing agreement.""
Lauren's face lost its color.
"How much control does she have?""
Richard looked at Rebecca.
"Explain it.""
Rebecca folded her hands.
"She is not the day-to-day operator of Walker Development. However, the trust retains substantial contractual protections, including approval rights over the proposed transfer of controlling interests. The exact scope will be confirmed through counsel.""
Lauren looked back at the document.
"That's impossible.""
Richard's voice remained quiet.
"Why?""
"Because Ethan told me he owned the company.""
"Did you verify that?""
Lauren opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Richard pushed another document toward her.
It was a photograph of Grace.
A photograph from an old charity gala.
Grace stood beside an elderly woman wearing a dark blue dress.
Lauren recognized the elderly woman.
Her father had once introduced her to Eleanor Walker at a private investment dinner.
Eleanor had been one of the quietest people in the room.
But Richard had spent nearly an hour speaking with her.
Lauren remembered asking him afterward why he had seemed so respectful.
He had replied, "Some people don't need to announce their influence.""
Lauren looked at the photograph again.
"That's Grace?""
"Yes," Rebecca replied.
Richard's expression became colder.
"And now I have another question.""
Lauren swallowed.
"What?""
"Why did you tell Ethan to represent you as an ordinary consultant when you were negotiating with a company in which your own family had a substantial acquisition interest?""
Lauren looked offended.
"I was trying to keep business and personal matters separate.""
Richard stared at her.
"By sleeping with the company's chief executive?""
Silence filled the room.
Lauren's cheeks turned red.
"Daddy—"
"Don't.""
He stood.
"Your relationship with Ethan is your business. Your conduct in a corporate transaction is mine.""
Lauren grabbed the document.
"Grace won't interfere. She doesn't understand any of this.""
Rebecca looked at her.
"She has already been contacted.""
Lauren froze.
"What?""
"We requested a meeting with her last night.""
"Why?""
"Because her authorization may be necessary before the proposed transaction can proceed.""
Lauren stood abruptly.
"Then I'll speak to her.""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
"I can handle this.""
"You have already demonstrated that you cannot.""
Lauren's eyes flashed.
"You're taking her side?""
Richard looked directly at his daughter.
"I'm taking the side of the truth.""
He turned toward Rebecca.
"Prepare a complete review of every representation made by Walker Development. Nothing gets signed until we know exactly what we're buying.""
Lauren picked up her handbag.
"This is ridiculous.""
Richard didn't respond.
She walked out.
The moment the conference room door closed, she pulled out her phone.
Ethan answered on the first ring.
"Lauren? Where have you been?""
"Do you know what your wife is?""
Ethan went silent.
"What?""
"Grace. Your wife. The quiet little woman you keep telling me has no money and no influence.""
"What are you talking about?""
Lauren lowered her voice.
"She's connected to the trust behind your company.""
Ethan gave a short laugh.
"That's nonsense.""
"Her name is on the ownership documents, Ethan.""
The silence that followed was longer.
Then he said, "I need to see those documents.""
"Your wife may have approval rights over the acquisition.""
"That's impossible.""
"That's exactly what I said.""
Ethan swore under his breath.
Lauren paced toward the elevator.
"Did you know?""
"No.""
"Don't lie to me.""
"I said I didn't know.""
She stopped walking.
"Then why did you tell me you were the sole owner?""
Ethan's voice became defensive.
"Because that's how I've always operated.""
Lauren closed her eyes.
She could already imagine her father's reaction if the transaction collapsed.
"Listen carefully," she said.
"I need you to fix this before the meeting.""
"Fix what?""
"Your wife.""
Ethan was silent.
Then he said something that made Lauren smile again.
"Don't worry. Grace has always been easy to manage.""
But neither of them noticed the man standing near the elevator.
A senior attorney from Pierce Capital.
He had heard enough to understand that something was seriously wrong.
And he was already sending a message to Richard Pierce.
At 8:15 a.m., Grace sat at the kitchen island of Daniel's house.
She wore a soft blue sweater and had barely touched her breakfast.
Michael was making coffee.
Nathan was on his laptop.
Daniel was speaking with a lawyer.
"Yes," Daniel said.
"I want the original agreement reviewed. Every amendment. Every transfer. Everything.""
He paused.
"No, we are not trying to take over day-to-day management. We want to protect the beneficiary's contractual rights.""
Grace looked up.
"Daniel?""
He covered the phone.
"One second.""
She lowered her voice.
"Can I ask you something?""
He ended the call.
"Of course.""
"Did Grandma really leave all of this to me?""
Daniel sat opposite her.
"She left you the beneficial interest. Your brothers and I have helped administer certain parts of the family arrangements, but the trust documents determine your rights.""
Grace looked down at her hands.
"I barely remember her talking about money.""
Daniel smiled.
"That's because she didn't care about showing it off.""
"She used to send me twenty dollars in birthday cards.""
"She also owned a collection of commercial properties.""
Grace stared at him.
"What?""
Michael nearly spilled his coffee.
"You didn't know?""
Grace shook her head.
Michael laughed.
"Your grandmother was something else.""
Daniel gave him a warning look.
Then he turned back to Grace.
"She believed money should create security, not arrogance. She didn't want you growing up believing people should treat you differently because of what your family owned.""
Grace's eyes became wet.
"She used to tell me that the best thing I could ever build was a home where people felt safe.""
Daniel reached across the table.
"She would be proud of you.""
Grace swallowed.
"Then why does everything feel so wrong?""
"Because you trusted someone who didn't deserve that trust.""
Her phone vibrated.
Ethan.
She stared at it.
Then she answered.
"Hello?""
"Grace, we need to talk.""
"About what?""
"About the company.""
She looked toward Daniel.
"What about it?""
"Don't play games.""
Grace's eyebrows lifted.
"Excuse me?""
"Eleanor Walker's trust. The financing documents. I need you to explain what you've told your brothers.""
Grace took a slow breath.
"I haven't told them anything that isn't true.""
"Then tell them to stay out of my business.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
Grace continued.
"Ethan, I didn't even know about the investment arrangement until last night.""
He scoffed.
"Convenient.""
"Why would I make this up?""
"Because you're angry.""
She looked down at her ringless finger.
"Yes. I am angry.""
"Then stop letting your brothers fill your head with nonsense.""
Grace's voice became quieter.
"You hit me yesterday.""
A pause.
"I already apologized.""
"No, you didn't.""
"I was under pressure.""
"That doesn't make it acceptable.""
Ethan exhaled.
"Grace, I have a very important meeting today. I don't have time for this.""
She almost smiled.
"Neither do I.""
"What?""
"I have an appointment with my attorney.""
The silence was immediate.
"Your attorney?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I want to understand my rights.""
Ethan's voice sharpened.
"You're going to destroy everything we've built.""
Grace stared at the breakfast table.
"Everything we built?""
"Don't twist my words.""
"You just told me I was destroying something you built.""
"Grace—"
"I have to go.""
"Wait. Don't you dare sign anything without talking to me.""
She ended the call.
Michael set a cup of tea beside her.
"How are you feeling?""
Grace looked at the phone.
"Like I married a stranger.""
Nathan closed his laptop.
"Maybe you married the man he wanted you to believe he was.""
Nobody spoke.
Then a notification appeared on Grace's screen.
An email from Rebecca Collins.
*Subject: Request for meeting — Pierce Capital Holdings.*
Grace opened it.
The message was polite and formal.
It requested a meeting that morning to discuss the trust's contractual rights and the proposed Walker Development acquisition.
At the bottom was a final line.
Ms. Pierce has specifically requested that you attend in person.
Grace looked at Daniel.
"Lauren wants to meet me.""
May you like
Daniel stood.
"Then we'll make sure you don't go alone.""
