Chapter 3: The Name Lauren Pierce Recognized
At 10:16 p.m., Grace sat in the passenger seat of Daniel's SUV while Michael drove behind them and Nathan followed in his own car.
The private clinic was twenty minutes away.
Rain tapped against the windshield.
Grace rested one hand on her stomach.
"Daniel?""
He glanced at her.
"Yes?""
"Why did you say Ethan doesn't own his company?""
Daniel kept his eyes on the road.
"Because business ownership isn't always as simple as the name on a building.""
"That's not an answer.""
He gave a small sigh.
"You're right.""
Grace turned toward him.
"Then tell me.""
Daniel was silent for several seconds.
"Do you remember when Ethan's first development project nearly collapsed?""
Grace nodded.
"Of course.""
"He told everyone that a private investor stepped in.""
"Yes.""
"Do you remember the investor's name?""
She thought about it.
"Walker Capital Partners?""
Daniel nodded.
"That was the name of the investment vehicle.""
Grace looked at him.
"What does that mean?""
"It means the money came through a company that held certain rights and financial interests. It wasn't necessarily a traditional outside investor.""
Grace's brow furrowed.
"Daniel, I don't understand.""
He softened his voice.
"That's all right. You don't have to understand everything tonight.""
"But I want to.""
He glanced at her.
"Then I'll tell you what I know. Years ago, when Ethan was struggling, he received a financial lifeline from a family office. The agreement gave that investor certain protections and rights in the company.""
Grace stared out at the wet road.
"Why would you know about that?""
Daniel smiled without humor.
"Because I reviewed the agreement.""
She turned sharply.
"You did?""
"Not the whole thing. Just the parts that affected the investment.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"You asked us not to interfere in your marriage. We respected that.""
Grace looked down.
Daniel continued.
"Your brothers and I have never wanted to control your decisions. But we also never stopped watching to make sure you were safe.""
Grace swallowed.
"Is the investor connected to Lauren?""
"Not directly, as far as I know.""
"Then why does Nathan think this is important?""
Daniel slowed at a traffic light.
"Because Lauren's family has been trying to buy into Walker Development. If they've been negotiating with Ethan, they may have been relying on information he hasn't fully disclosed.""
Grace stared at him.
"Could he lose his company?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
"Possibly.""
The light turned green.
He continued driving.
At the clinic, a nurse greeted them at the entrance.
Grace was taken into an examination room while Daniel waited outside.
Michael arrived carrying her handbag and a bottle of water.
Nathan appeared several minutes later, still staring at his phone.
"Any news?"" Michael asked.
"Not yet.""
Michael lowered his voice.
"What's wrong with Ethan's company?""
Nathan slipped his phone into his pocket.
"I've been checking the public filings.""
"And?""
"Something isn't adding up.""
Daniel emerged from the corridor.
"Grace is being examined. The doctor wants to make sure everything is okay.""
Michael nodded.
"Good.""
Nathan looked at his oldest brother.
"I found the old financing agreement.""
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Where?""
"In the archived corporate filings. The original holding structure is still referenced.""
"Who is the beneficial owner?""
Nathan hesitated.
"That's what I'm trying to confirm.""
Daniel folded his arms.
"Don't guess.""
"I'm not guessing.""
Nathan showed him a page.
At the top was the name of a private investment company.
*Northbridge Heritage Holdings.*
Michael frowned.
"Never heard of it.""
"You wouldn't have," Nathan said.
"It operates through several subsidiaries.""
Daniel studied the page.
Then his gaze stopped on a line near the bottom.
"Where did you get this?""
"Public records and the old financing disclosures.""
Daniel read it again.
His expression changed.
"That's impossible.""
Michael stepped closer.
"What?""
Daniel didn't answer.
He looked toward the examination room.
Then back at Nathan.
"Find the original trust instrument.""
Nathan nodded.
"I've requested it.""
Michael frowned.
"Would somebody tell me what's going on?""
Daniel finally spoke.
"Northbridge Heritage Holdings is the investment vehicle connected to Grace's maternal family.""
Michael blinked.
"Wait. Her grandmother?""
Daniel nodded.
Grace's grandmother, Eleanor Walker, had been a remarkably private woman.
To neighbors, she had been a retired schoolteacher who loved gardening, old books, and handwritten letters.
She lived in a modest brick home outside Asheville and drove the same old sedan for nearly twenty years.
But Eleanor had inherited interests in several family businesses and investment properties.
She had also established a trust before her death.
Grace had never been interested in discussing it.
In fact, she had once asked her brothers not to mention the subject around Ethan.
Not because she was hiding anything.
Because she wanted her marriage to be built on love, not money.
Michael looked stunned.
"Are you saying Grace's family helped finance Ethan's company?""
Daniel nodded.
"Indirectly, yes.""
Michael stared down the corridor.
"And Ethan doesn't know?""
"Not the full structure.""
Nathan's phone vibrated.
He opened an email.
Then his expression shifted.
"I found it.""
Daniel moved beside him.
The document contained several pages of corporate records.
Nathan scrolled to the relevant section.
There it was.
The original investment agreement.
The names of the entities.
The voting provisions.
And the beneficial ownership schedule.
Michael leaned over his shoulder.
"Read it.""
Nathan looked at Daniel.
"Grace Walker is listed as the principal beneficiary.""
Silence.
Michael slowly straightened.
"Grace?""
Daniel nodded.
"Through the Eleanor Walker Family Trust.""
Michael let out a low breath.
"So her grandmother's trust...""
"Provided the initial capital," Daniel finished.
"And retained certain contractual protections.""
Nathan scrolled farther.
"There's more. The trust has approval rights over certain extraordinary transactions, including a sale of controlling interests.""
Michael shook his head.
"Then Ethan can't simply sell the company?""
"Not without satisfying the agreement.""
Nathan looked at the document again.
"And here's something else.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"What?""
"The current acquisition proposal from Pierce Capital.""
He opened an attached filing.
It was dated three weeks earlier.
The document listed the proposed terms of a transaction involving Walker Development.
Nathan read the summary.
"Lauren's company is attempting to acquire a controlling stake.""
Michael gave a humorless laugh.
"Of course she is.""
Daniel looked toward the examination room.
"Does Grace know any of this?""
Nathan shook his head.
"Not yet.""
"Then we don't tell her until the doctor finishes.""
Michael stared at the document.
"Do you think Lauren knows?""
Nathan considered it.
"She probably knows Grace has some connection to the investment structure. But whether she knows Grace is the principal beneficiary is another question.""
Daniel looked at the photograph Nathan had shown him earlier.
Lauren Pierce.
The confident woman in the black dress.
The woman who had stood in Grace's dining room and told her that Ethan belonged with someone better.
Daniel's voice became colder.
"She may have walked into that house believing she was taking a wife out of her husband's way.""
Michael folded his arms.
"She has no idea whose way she just stepped into.""
At that moment, the examination room door opened.
Grace appeared with a doctor beside her.
The brothers immediately stood.
The doctor smiled.
"Everything looks reassuring. The baby's heartbeat is strong, and we haven't found any immediate signs of injury related to the incident.""
Grace released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
"Thank you.""
The doctor handed her a printed report.
"However, I want you to come back if you experience abdominal pain, bleeding, dizziness, or anything unusual. We'll also arrange a follow-up appointment.""
Daniel nodded.
"Thank you, Doctor.""
When the doctor left, Michael embraced Grace carefully.
"Baby's okay?""
She smiled through tears.
"Baby's okay.""
Nathan touched her shoulder.
"Good.""
Grace looked between them.
"Now will somebody explain what's happening?""
Daniel glanced at Nathan.
Nathan opened his phone.
"Grace, there's something you need to know about the money that helped Ethan start Walker Development.""
She listened as he explained the trust structure.
The original investment.
The contractual rights.
The proposed acquisition.
And finally, the name attached to the beneficial ownership schedule.
Grace stared at him.
"Me?""
Nathan nodded.
"Yes.""
"But I never gave Ethan money.""
Daniel spoke gently.
"You didn't have to. Your grandmother established the trust long before you met him.""
Grace sat down.
"She never told me it was connected to his company.""
"She probably didn't want you to feel obligated to interfere in his business," Daniel replied.
Grace stared at the floor.
"So all those years, Ethan thought he built everything alone.""
Daniel didn't answer.
She looked up.
"Did he know the investment came from my grandmother?""
Nathan nodded.
"He knew about the original family office financing. We haven't established what he knew about the beneficial ownership.""
Grace rubbed her forehead.
"Why didn't he ask?""
Daniel looked at her.
"Maybe he didn't want to know.""
The words hung in the air.
Then Grace's phone rang.
Ethan.
She stared at the screen.
Michael immediately said, "Don't answer.""
But Grace picked it up.
"Hello?""
"Where are you?""
Ethan's voice sounded irritated.
"At the doctor.""
"Why?""
"Because I'm pregnant, Ethan. And you hit me.""
A pause.
Then he sighed.
"Grace, don't turn this into something it isn't.""
Her brothers exchanged looks.
"Something it isn't?"" she repeated.
"I was angry. You pushed me.""
Michael stepped forward.
Daniel held up one hand.
Ethan continued.
"Listen, I want you home. We need to talk.""
"I'm not coming home tonight.""
"Don't be ridiculous.""
Grace looked at the brothers standing around her.
For years, she had believed that keeping the peace was the same thing as protecting her marriage.
She no longer believed that.
"Good night, Ethan.""
"Grace, wait. Lauren and I—"
She ended the call.
Nathan's phone vibrated almost immediately.
He looked down.
Then his eyes widened.
"Daniel.""
"What now?""
Nathan turned the screen toward him.
It was a message from an executive at Pierce Capital.
*URGENT: Lauren Pierce has requested an emergency review of the Walker Development acquisition. She wants the beneficial ownership schedule verified before tomorrow's signing.*
Daniel read it carefully.
Michael leaned closer.
"She found out?""
Nathan shook his head.
"Maybe.""
Grace looked at them.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel took a slow breath.
"It means tomorrow morning, Lauren may discover something she should have checked before entering your house tonight.""
Grace looked down at her wedding ring.
She slowly twisted it around her finger.
Then she removed it.
Not dramatically.
Not angrily.
She simply placed it in her handbag.
"Take me home," she said.
Daniel nodded.
"Of course.""
But before they could leave, Nathan's phone rang.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
"Mr. Walker? This is Rebecca from Pierce Capital's legal department.""
Nathan frowned.
"Yes?""
"We need to speak with the authorized beneficiary of the Eleanor Walker Family Trust.""
"Why?""
There was a pause.
Then the woman spoke carefully.
"Because Ms. Lauren Pierce has just learned that Grace Walker is listed as the controlling beneficiary of the original investment arrangement.""
Nathan looked at his sister.
"What's the problem?""
Rebecca lowered her voice.
"Ms. Pierce is requesting an immediate meeting.""
"With whom?""
"Mrs. Grace Walker.""
Nathan glanced at Daniel.
Then Michael.
Finally, he looked at Grace.
"Why does she want to meet my sister?""
The woman's answer made all three brothers go silent.
"Because Ms. Pierce believes her father has been misled about the ownership of Walker Development.""
Grace slowly lifted her eyes.
And then Rebecca added one final sentence.
May you like
"She also wants to know why Mr. Ethan Walker has been telling everyone that his wife has no financial interest in the company.""
*Tomorrow morning, Lauren Pierce would discover that the quiet, pregnant woman she had slapped aside in her own marriage was the very person whose signature could determine the future of Ethan Walker's empire.*
