Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Anniversary Dinner

By 2:40 p.m., Ethan Walker had called Lauren seven times.

She had answered none of them.

He was sitting in his office at Walker Development, staring at a draft acquisition agreement that suddenly seemed far more dangerous than it had the previous evening.

His assistant, Melissa, entered with a stack of documents.

"Mr. Walker?""

"What?""

"Pierce Capital has postponed the signing.""

Ethan looked up.

"What do you mean postponed?""

"They've requested an independent review of the ownership structure.""

"Who requested it?""

"Mr. Pierce.""

Ethan stood.

"Put him on the phone.""

"He's unavailable.""

"Then call Rebecca.""

"She's unavailable too.""

Ethan slammed the document onto his desk.

"Everybody is unavailable today?""

Melissa remained still.

"There's something else.""

He looked at her.

"What?""

"Several members of the legal team have requested copies of the original financing documents.""

Ethan stared at her.

"Who authorized that?""

"They said it came from Pierce Capital.""

"Get out.""

Melissa nodded and left.

Ethan grabbed his phone.

This time, he called Lauren again.

She answered after the fourth ring.

"What?""

"Where are you?""

"At the office.""

"We need to talk.""

"We've been talking for weeks, Ethan. Maybe you should start listening.""

He clenched his jaw.

"What did you tell your father?""

"Nothing he didn't already discover.""

"Lauren, this is serious.""

"Yes. It is.""

He lowered his voice.

"Listen. Grace is emotional. Her brothers are interfering. We can get through this if you convince your father to continue.""

Lauren laughed bitterly.

"You still don't understand.""

"Understand what?""

"My father isn't angry because Grace showed up with her brothers. He's angry because you lied about the ownership structure.""

"I didn't lie.""

"You submitted documents saying you were the sole controlling shareholder.""

"Operationally, I am.""

"That's not what the agreement says.""

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

"Nobody has ever questioned it before.""

"Because nobody looked closely enough.""

He paced behind his desk.

"Can you fix it?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because my father has suspended the transaction.""

Ethan went silent.

Lauren continued.

"And there's something else.""

"What?""

"My father wants me removed from the negotiations.""

Ethan stopped pacing.

"What?""

"He believes I have a conflict of interest.""

Ethan's expression changed.

"Because of us?""

"Obviously.""

He lowered his voice.

"Lauren, we had an understanding.""

"We had an affair, Ethan. Don't confuse that with an understanding.""

The words stung.

"After everything I've done for you—"

"Everything you've done for me?""

She laughed again.

"You brought me into your wife's home on your anniversary. You told me she was practically a stranger. You promised me the company would be ours.""

"It can still happen.""

"Not if Grace has the rights your lawyers failed to disclose.""

Ethan gripped the edge of his desk.

"Then I'll talk to her.""

"Good luck.""

Lauren ended the call.

Ethan stared at the phone.

Then he dialed Grace.

No answer.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

He sent a message.

We need to talk privately. No brothers. No lawyers.

A minute later, his phone rang.

For a moment, he thought it was Grace.

But the caller ID showed another name.

His mother.

He answered.

"Hi, Mom.""

"Ethan, what have you done?""

He closed his eyes.

"Not you too.""

"Don't speak to me like that. I just received a call from Daniel.""

Ethan straightened.

"Daniel called you?""

"He told me what happened.""

Ethan looked toward the office door.

"Mom, it was a misunderstanding.""

"A misunderstanding?""

"I lost my temper.""

"You hit your pregnant wife.""

He rubbed his face.

"Mom—"

"Don't you dare minimize this.""

Ethan's mother, Margaret, had always liked Grace.

She remembered the young woman who had helped Ethan through the difficult years.

She remembered Grace sitting beside her hospital bed when Ethan had been away at a business meeting.

She remembered Grace bringing homemade soup and staying until midnight.

And she remembered something else.

A conversation with Eleanor Walker.

A conversation that had taken place shortly before Eleanor died.

Margaret's voice became quieter.

"Did you know what Eleanor did for you?""

Ethan frowned.

"What?""

"Your grandmother-in-law helped save your company.""

"That's old news.""

"No, Ethan. It isn't.""

He went still.

"What are you talking about?""

"She didn't just invest in your business. She made sure Grace would never be financially dependent on a man who might decide he no longer wanted her.""

Ethan stared at his desk.

"Mom, I don't have time for this.""

"Then make time. Because I think you have spent five years believing that your wife was fortunate to marry you.""

He said nothing.

Margaret continued.

"Grace was fortunate to love you. That was her choice. But you should never have mistaken her kindness for weakness.""

The call ended.

Ethan remained standing.

Then someone knocked.

His assistant opened the door.

"Mr. Walker, there's a visitor.""

"Who?""

"Your mother.""

Ethan looked toward the hallway.

Margaret entered without waiting.

She carried a small envelope.

He frowned.

"What is that?""

"Something I should have given you years ago.""

She placed it on his desk.

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a letter written in Eleanor Walker's distinctive handwriting.

He recognized it immediately.

He had seen it once, years earlier, when Grace received a birthday card.

He unfolded the letter.

Dear Ethan,

Grace has chosen to build a life with you. I hope you understand what a remarkable gift that is.

I have agreed to support your first major development project through the family investment structure. This is not a reward, and it is not a loan you should repay with gratitude.

It is an opportunity.

Please remember that my granddaughter has never measured a person's worth by what they own. Do not make the mistake of believing that because she is quiet, she does not understand what matters.

If you build something together, make sure she always has a place in it.

And if you ever find yourself choosing between protecting your pride and protecting her, choose her.

Eleanor.

Ethan read the final paragraph twice.

Then he looked up.

"Why are you giving me this?""

Margaret's eyes were wet.

"Because I think you need to remember the woman you married.""

He folded the letter.

"Mom, Grace is being manipulated.""

Margaret stared at him.

"By whom?""

"Her brothers.""

"Her brothers are protecting her because you hurt her.""

Ethan stood.

"I made one mistake.""

Margaret shook her head.

"No. You made several. The slap was simply the one nobody could pretend not to see.""

She walked toward the door.

Before leaving, she turned.

"Your father would have been ashamed of you.""

The door closed.

Ethan stood alone.

For the first time, he began to wonder whether the company he had spent five years building was not entirely his.

And whether the woman he had spent five years underestimating had been the reason it existed in the first place.

At 4:00 p.m., Grace sat in Daniel's study.

A lawyer named Caroline Hayes had joined them through a secure video call.

Caroline was an experienced corporate attorney who had represented several family trusts and privately held companies.

She listened carefully as Nathan explained the documents.

When he finished, she removed her glasses.

"Mrs. Walker, I want to make something clear.""

Grace looked at the screen.

"Yes?""

"You do not need to make any decisions today.""

Grace nodded.

"Good.""

"However, we need to preserve the records. We should also formally notify the relevant parties that no transaction should proceed without compliance with the existing agreements.""

"Can Ethan sell the company without my permission?""

Caroline considered her wording.

"That depends on the exact terms of the trust documents, the company's governing agreements, and any valid amendments. Based on what I've reviewed so far, the proposed transaction appears to require consent that has not been obtained.""

Grace looked toward Daniel.

"So he can't simply sign it?""

"Not safely. And I would advise against signing anything until the review is complete.""

Grace looked down at the folder.

"Could I lose the trust?""

"Not merely because your husband is angry. But we need to review the trust's terms carefully and ensure no one has improperly transferred assets or altered the arrangement.""

Nathan leaned forward.

"There's another issue.""

Caroline looked at him.

"What?""

"The original company filings show a transfer of certain voting rights eighteen months ago.""

Daniel straightened.

"Why didn't we see that earlier?""

Nathan opened another document.

"Because it was filed through a subsidiary.""

Caroline's expression became serious.

"Send that to me immediately.""

Grace looked between them.

"What does it mean?""

Nathan hesitated.

"It might mean Ethan has already attempted to change the ownership structure.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Or someone changed it on his behalf.""

Grace stared at the screen.

"Can you find out who?""

Caroline nodded.

"We can investigate the filing history and request the underlying documents.""

Grace took a breath.

"Then do it.""

Caroline studied her.

"Are you certain?""

Grace nodded.

"Yes.""

For a moment, she looked almost like the young woman who had sat beside Ethan during his first investor presentation.

Only this time, she wasn't there to support his dream.

She was there to protect her own future.

After the call ended, Daniel walked toward the window.

Michael sat on the edge of the desk.

Nathan was still reviewing the records.

Grace looked at her brothers.

"There's something else I need to tell you.""

They turned.

"Last night, before Ethan came home, I found something in his office.""

Daniel frowned.

"What?""

"A folder.""

Nathan closed his laptop.

"What was in it?""

Grace swallowed.

"Divorce papers.""

Michael stood.

"Divorce papers?""

She nodded.

"I didn't read everything. I only saw my name and his signature.""

Daniel walked closer.

"When did you find them?""

"About two weeks ago.""

"Why didn't you tell us?""

Grace looked down.

"Because I thought he was preparing them for someone else. I thought maybe he was helping a client.""

Michael shook his head.

"Grace...""

"I know.""

She took a breath.

"But there was another page.""

Nathan approached.

"What page?""

Grace looked at him.

"It had a list of assets. The house. The cars.

Some investments. And something called the Walker Family Reserve.""

Nathan's expression changed.

"Where did you see that?""

"In the folder.""

"Was there a date?""

"Yes. October fourteenth.""

Daniel frowned.

"That's nearly three weeks ago.""

Grace nodded.

Nathan returned to his laptop.

"Wait.""

He searched through the records.

Then he opened a file.

"Daniel, look at this.""

Daniel moved beside him.

A corporate transfer record appeared.

The date was October fourteenth.

The description read:

*Proposed transfer of residential and investment assets to Walker Family Reserve LLC.*

Michael leaned over.

"What's that?""

Nathan scrolled down.

"The registered manager is Ethan Walker.""

Grace looked confused.

"Why would he put our house in a company?""

Nathan continued reading.

Then his expression hardened.

"Because it isn't just the house.""

He turned the laptop toward Grace.

The document listed several assets, including an investment account linked to the original financing arrangement.

At the bottom was a second name.

*Lauren Pierce — Proposed Authorized Beneficiary.*

Grace's hand moved to her stomach.

"Lauren?""

Nathan nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

Daniel looked furious.

"Did Ethan have authorization to do this?""

Nathan shook his head.

"That's what we need to establish.""

Grace stared at the screen.

The room seemed to grow colder.

For weeks, she had believed her husband was simply having an affair.

Then she had learned he was hiding her family's financial interests.

Now she was looking at a document suggesting that he had been preparing to move assets into a new company and name his mistress as a beneficiary.

Michael walked away from the desk.

"I swear, if I ever see that man—"

"Michael," Daniel said.

"I'm not going to do anything. I'm just saying what everybody is thinking.""

Grace slowly stood.

"Can I see the original folder again?""

Nathan nodded.

"I'll get a copy.""

She shook her head.

"No. I want the original.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?""

Grace stared at the screen.

"Because I remember something.""

She closed her eyes.

A memory returned.

Two weeks earlier, she had been looking for a receipt in Ethan's office.

The folder had been open.

She had seen the divorce papers.

And beneath them, she had noticed a small handwritten note.

She hadn't thought much about it then.

But now she remembered the words.

Complete before the announcement.

Grace opened her eyes.

"There's a note.""

Nathan looked up.

"What note?""

"On the folder. It said, 'Complete before the announcement.''"

Daniel's expression tightened.

"What announcement?""

Grace shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Nathan began typing.

Then he stopped.

He stared at the screen.

"Daniel...""

"What?""

Nathan turned the laptop around.

A press release had been scheduled for the following morning.

It had been drafted three weeks earlier.

The headline read:

*WALKER DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCES NEW STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH PIERCE CAPITAL — ETHAN WALKER AND LAUREN PIERCE TO LEAD NEXT PHASE OF EXPANSION.*

Grace read it slowly.

Then she looked at the date.

Tomorrow.

Her husband hadn't merely planned to leave her.

He had planned to publicly introduce Lauren as his new business partner while quietly restructuring assets and preparing divorce papers.

And beneath the press release was an attached photograph.

Ethan and Lauren stood together, smiling at a private corporate event.

The caption read:

The future of Walker Development.

Grace stared at the photograph.

Then she closed the laptop.

"Tomorrow," she said quietly.

Daniel looked at her.

"What about tomorrow?""

Grace lifted her eyes.

"If Ethan is planning to announce his future with Lauren tomorrow, I want to be there.""

Michael straightened.

"Grace, are you sure?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel studied his sister's face.

For the first time since the slap, he saw something different in her expression.

Not anger.

Not heartbreak.

Determination.

Nathan slowly closed his folder.

"Then I think we should prepare for a very interesting morning.""

Grace looked toward the window.

Outside, the Charlotte skyline glowed beneath the fading afternoon light.

Ethan believed he had already written the ending of their marriage.

He believed Lauren would stand beside him.

He believed Grace would remain quiet.

May you like

But tomorrow, in front of his investors, his employees, and the woman he had chosen over his pregnant wife, Ethan Walker was about to discover that the quietest person in the room had finally decided to speak.

And she would not be speaking alone.
