Chapter 8: The Family That Was Built on Lies
I stared at the DNA test.
The paper trembled between my fingers.
I read the result again.
Then again.
Like the words would somehow rearrange themselves.
*0% Biological Match.*
My name.
Lily’s name.
A result that made no sense.
Because I remembered the day she was born.
I remembered holding her for the first time.
I remembered Sarah crying.
I remembered looking into Lily’s tiny face and feeling something I had never felt before.
Love.
Not because of blood.
Because she was mine.
She was my daughter.
But the man standing in front of me had just shattered the one thing I had never questioned.
“Who are you?””
My voice sounded empty.
The stranger looked at me.
For the first time, he didn’t look like an enemy.
He looked like someone carrying a burden.
“My name is Ethan.””
I stared at him.
“Another name I’m supposed to believe?””
He looked down.
“I know what this sounds like.””
“You think?””
I stepped closer.
“You’ve been hiding in my house. Someone has been pretending to be me. My wife has lied to me for years. Now you’re telling me I’m not Lily’s father?””
I held up the DNA test.
“Give me one reason not to think you’re just another person trying to destroy my life.””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Because I’m the only person trying to give it back to you.””
I almost laughed.
“Give my life back?””
I pointed toward the door.
“My daughter is downstairs terrified. My family is falling apart. You’re standing here telling me everything I believed was fake.””
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
“Not everything.””
“Then what is real?””
His eyes softened.
“Lily.””
That answer stopped me.
Because he was right.
Whatever the truth was…
Whatever secrets everyone had buried…
Lily was real.
My love for her was real.
I walked past him and left the hidden room.
I needed answers.
Not more mysteries.
When I returned downstairs, everyone was waiting.
Sarah looked at my face.
She knew.
She knew I had found something.
“Daniel…”
I held up the DNA test.
Her expression collapsed.
Richard closed his eyes.
Like he had been expecting this moment.
“You knew.””
I looked at Sarah.
“You knew I wasn’t her biological father.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I knew.””
The answer was quiet.
But it destroyed me.
“How long?””
“Since before she was born.””
The room spun.
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting on the couch, holding her stuffed rabbit.
Watching the adults destroy her world.
I lowered my voice.
“Who is her father?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan walked into the room.
Sarah looked at him.
And whispered:
“No.””
I turned.
“You know him?””
Her face went pale.
Ethan looked at her.
“You thought I was dead.””
The room froze.
Again.
Another person who was supposed to be gone.
Another lie.
I looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Daniel, before you knew Sarah, before this house, before this family…”
He looked at Sarah.
“We had a daughter.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Sarah started crying.
“Stop.””
Ethan ignored her.
“She was pregnant when she was twenty-three.””
I looked at Sarah.
She couldn’t meet my eyes.
“Sarah?””
Her voice broke.
“I was young.””
Ethan continued.
“Richard took Lily away from her.””
My eyes moved to Richard.
“What?””
Richard’s face remained cold.
“She was not capable of raising a child.””
Sarah looked at him with disbelief.
“You stole my baby.””
The words were barely audible.
Richard didn’t deny it.
“I protected the family.””
I felt disgust rise in me.
“You call this protection?””
He looked at me.
“You have no idea what was at stake.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“I know exactly what was at stake.””
I pointed at Lily.
“A little girl who spent years afraid in her own home.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“She was safer with you.””
I froze.
“What?””
Ethan looked at me.
“That’s the part you don’t understand.””
He walked closer.
“Lily was never meant to be hidden from you.””
“Then why?””
“Because Richard knew someone would come looking.””
The room became quiet.
I looked at Richard.
“Who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Ethan did.
“Lily’s existence threatened everything he built.””
I looked at Sarah.
“Why did you marry me?””
The question hurt to ask.
But I needed the answer.
Sarah cried.
“At first?””
She paused.
“At first, because my father told me to.””
I closed my eyes.
The truth hurt differently than I expected.
Not because she didn’t love me.
Because I realized I never knew which parts were real.
“And later?””
Sarah looked at Lily.
“Later because I loved you.””
Silence.
I wanted to believe her.
A part of me still did.
But another part remembered every secret.
Every lie.
Every time Lily looked afraid.
Ethan spoke softly.
“Sarah tried to leave him.””
I looked at him.
“Richard?””
He nodded.
“She took Lily and disappeared.””
Richard’s voice turned cold.
“She made a mistake.””
Ethan looked at him.
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“You made sure she believed she had no choice.””
I looked at Richard.
“What did you do?””
For the first time, Richard looked older.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
“I protected my legacy.””
I shook my head.
“You ruined your family.””
Richard looked at Lily.
“She is the key.””
I stepped in front of her.
“She is a child.””
“You still don’t understand.””
Richard walked toward the table.
“The people after us don’t care about children.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who are these people?””
Nobody answered.
Then the lights went out.
The entire mansion went dark.
Lily screamed.
I immediately grabbed her.
“Stay with me.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door.
Then another.
Michael moved toward the window.
His face changed.
“They found us.””
Sarah whispered:
“Who?””
Michael looked back.
“The people Richard was hiding from.””
My phone suddenly lit up.
A message.
From the same unknown number.
*YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES TO LEAVE THE HOUSE.*
Another message appeared.
*OR WE TAKE LILY OURSELVES.*
I looked around.
Everyone was finally afraid.
Even Richard.
That told me everything.
I grabbed Lily’s hand.
“We’re leaving.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You can’t.””
I looked at him.
“Try stopping me.””
He didn’t.
Because he knew.
This time, he couldn’t control me.
We moved toward the front door.
Then Lily stopped.
She was staring at the staircase.
“Daddy.””
I turned.
“What?””
She pointed upward.
“There’s something you need to see.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
She whispered:
“The first Daddy left me a message.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then Alex.
Then Sarah.
Nobody understood.
“What message?””
Lily slowly walked toward the stairs.
I followed.
At the top was a small piece of paper taped to the wall.
A child’s handwriting.
But the message wasn’t from Lily.
It was from someone who had been watching her.
I pulled it down.
Only one sentence was written.
*DANIEL CARTER IS NOT THE THIRD VERSION.*
I felt my blood turn cold.
Below the sentence was a name.
A name that made Sarah cover her mouth.
A name that made Richard step backward.
A name I had never heard before.
*VERSION ONE.*
May you like
And underneath it:
*HE IS STILL ALIVE.*
