Chapter 5: The Man Wearing My Face

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

I stared at the photo on my phone.

Then I looked at Lily.

Then back at the photo.

The reflection in the kitchen window was blurry.

The angle was wrong.

The lighting was terrible.

But there was one thing I couldn’t ignore.

The man standing behind Lily was wearing my gray sweater.

The same one hanging in my closet.

The same one I had worn two nights earlier.

The same one I thought was mine.

My fingers went numb.

“Lily…”

My voice barely came out.

“Are you sure?””

She nodded immediately.

Her small hands grabbed my jacket.

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He always wears your clothes.””

The room went completely silent.

Sarah looked like she had seen a ghost.

Richard’s confidence disappeared.

Even Michael looked shocked.

I turned toward my wife.

“You knew.””

It wasn’t a question.

Sarah looked away.

“Daniel…”

“You knew someone was coming into my daughter’s room?””

Her lips parted.

“I didn’t know it was him.””

“Then who did you think it was?””

She had no answer.

And that scared me more than a lie.

I stepped back.

“How long?””

Sarah’s eyes lowered.

“Months.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

Months.

For months, someone had been inside my home.

Near my daughter.

Wearing my clothes.

Pretending to be me.

I looked at Lily.

All those nights I came home late from business meetings.

All those times she told me she had nightmares.

I thought she was just afraid of the dark.

I thought she missed me.

I thought I understood my daughter.

I didn’t.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Lily looked down.

“Because he said you would get hurt.””

My heart cracked.

“Who said that?””

She didn’t answer.

She looked at Sarah.

That small movement told me everything.

I turned slowly.

“Sarah.””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel, please.””

“No.””

My voice became cold.

“No more please. No more secrets.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“She was scared in her own house.””

Sarah started crying.

“I was trying to keep her safe.””

I stared at her.

“You call this safe?””

She had no response.

The phone in my hand buzzed again.

Another message.

Same unknown number.

This time, it was a video.

I hesitated.

Michael stepped closer.

“Don’t open it.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face was pale.

“Because whoever sent that wants you to see it.””

“Good.””

I pressed play.

The screen showed a hallway.

My hallway.

The one outside Lily’s bedroom.

The camera angle was unfamiliar.

Hidden.

The timestamp appeared.

Three weeks earlier.

I watched as a figure walked slowly toward Lily’s door.

The person was wearing my sweater.

My posture.

Even the way I walked.

For a second, if I didn’t know better…

I would have thought it was me.

The figure stopped outside Lily’s room.

Then came the sound.

Three soft knocks.

My secret signal with Lily.

My stomach turned.

The door opened.

Lily appeared.

Younger somehow.

More afraid.

The person crouched down.

I couldn’t see his face.

But I heard his voice.

My voice.

“Daddy’s here.””

I almost dropped the phone.

Lily covered her ears.

“Stop.””

I immediately turned the video off.

I pulled her into my arms.

“I’m sorry.””

She shook against me.

“I knew it wasn’t you.””

Those words destroyed me.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“Because Daddy always smells like coffee.””

I froze.

“What?””

She wiped her eyes.

“And because Daddy hugs me before he leaves.””

My throat tightened.

The fake version of me had copied everything except the things that mattered.

Richard watched silently.

Then he spoke.

“He was trained.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

Richard looked at Michael.

“You were supposed to control this situation.””

Michael’s face changed.

“You knew?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Michael stepped toward him.

“You knew he was in the house?””

Richard remained silent.

Michael’s anger exploded.

“You let him get close to her?””

I had never seen Michael lose control before.

He grabbed Richard’s coat.

“You promised she would never be involved.””

Richard pushed him away.

“You forget who made your life possible.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Both men stopped.

I looked at Richard.

“Who is he?””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

I laughed.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“The question is why he chose your face.””

A chill went through me.

“What does that mean?””

Richard walked toward the table.

“Someone wanted Lily to believe he was you.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Why?””

Sarah whispered:

“Because Lily knows something.””

I turned.

“What?””

Sarah wiped her tears.

“Something she saw.””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped backward.

“I didn’t do anything.””

I immediately knelt.

“Sweetheart, nobody thinks you did.””

She looked terrified.

“Mommy said I had to forget.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

The guilt on her face was obvious.

“Forget what?””

Lily looked at the floor.

“The night Grandpa disappeared.””

The room froze.

Richard’s face changed.

“What did you say?””

Lily looked at him.

“You told Mommy you were leaving forever.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Lily.””

I moved between them.

“Don’t.””

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

“What did she see?””

Lily held my hand.

“I saw Grandpa and Mommy fighting.””

Sarah whispered:

“Lily…”

“No.””

My daughter looked at her mother.

“You told me never to tell Daddy.””

My heart sank.

“What happened that night?””

Lily looked at me.

Her voice became tiny.

“Grandpa gave Mommy a box.””

“What box?””

“I don’t know.””

She shook her head.

“But inside was a picture.””

“Of what?””

She looked toward Richard.

“Of you.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“Daddy, it was a picture of you sleeping.””

A cold wave moved through me.

“What?””

She continued.

“Grandpa said they had to make sure you believed the story.””

Nobody moved.

Michael whispered:

“What story?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“The story that Daddy was my real father.””

The words hung in the air.

I felt like the ground disappeared.

I looked at Sarah.

She looked shattered.

“Daniel…”

I couldn’t speak.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was afraid.

Afraid of the answer.

The phone rang again.

Everyone looked at it.

This time, the caller ID was different.

Not unknown.

A name.

A name that made Sarah collapse into the nearest chair.

*Daniel Carter.*

My own name.

My own number.

My phone was in my hand.

Yet another phone was ringing somewhere inside the mansion.

Slowly…

from upstairs.

Michael looked toward the staircase.

“That’s impossible.””

I stared at the dark hallway.

“What?””

His face turned pale.

“Because that phone belongs to the man who has been pretending to be you.””

A sound came from above.

A door opening.

Then footsteps.

Someone was walking down the stairs.

Wearing my clothes.

Carrying my phone.

And when he reached the final step…

Lily screamed.

“Daddy…”

I looked at the stranger standing in front of me.

Because he had my face.

May you like

But the thing that terrified me most wasn’t that he looked like me.

It was that he smiled exactly like me.
