Chapter 7: The Second Man Behind My Name
Nobody moved.
The voice came from upstairs again.
“Daniel.””
My own voice.
My own tone.
The same calm way I used to call Lily when she was hiding under her blanket during thunderstorms.
Except I wasn’t the one saying it.
Lily squeezed my hand so tightly her fingers hurt.
“Daddy…”
“I’m here.””
I forced the words out.
But for the first time in my life, I heard my own voice and wondered if it belonged to someone else.
Alex slowly stepped away from the staircase.
That was when I noticed something.
He wasn’t acting anymore.
The confidence was gone.
The arrogance.
The control.
He was scared.
I looked at him.
“You know who that is.””
He didn’t answer.
“Alex.””
His eyes stayed fixed on the stairs.
“You don’t understand.””
I almost laughed.
“That’s everyone’s favorite sentence tonight.””
I moved closer.
“My wife says it.””
“My father-in-law says it.””
“You say it.””
I pointed upstairs.
“And whoever is up there says it.””
I lowered my voice.
“I’m done not understanding.””
Richard suddenly spoke.
“Daniel, you need to leave.””
I turned toward him.
“Leave?””
“Yes.””
“After everything I’ve heard?””
His expression was serious.
“Especially after everything you’ve heard.””
I stared at him.
“You’re afraid.””
For the first time, Richard didn’t hide it.
A slight change in his face.
A hesitation.
Enough.
The man who had controlled everyone in the room was afraid of someone upstairs.
I looked at Michael.
“Who is he?””
Michael looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
I stepped closer.
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
His voice was quiet.
“I know about Alex. I know about Richard’s plan. But this…”
He looked toward the ceiling.
“This wasn’t supposed to happen.””
Sarah whispered:
“What do you mean?””
Michael looked at her.
“You knew there was another person?””
Sarah shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“Then why does Lily know him?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Lily pulled my sleeve.
“Daddy.””
I looked down.
“What?””
“He doesn’t like when I call him that.””
My heart stopped.
“Call who that?””
She looked upstairs.
“The other Daddy.””
I crouched.
“Lily, I need you to tell me everything.””
She looked nervous.
“He came when you were gone.””
“How many times?””
She counted quietly on her fingers.
“Five.””
Five.
Someone had entered my daughter’s room five times.
And I had no idea.
“What did he do?””
Lily looked at Sarah.
Her mother immediately looked away.
That hurt.
Because my daughter was still afraid to tell me.
“Sweetheart.””
I softened my voice.
“You can tell me anything.””
She whispered:
“He asked questions.””
“What kind of questions?””
“About you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What questions?””
She looked at me.
“He asked if you were still the same.””
A chill went through me.
“What does that mean?””
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then she added:
“He said he needed to know if Daddy was ready.””
The words echoed.
Ready for what?
Before I could ask, a loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone jumped.
Richard immediately moved toward the staircase.
I blocked him.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Move.””
“No.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””
I stepped closer.
“My daughter was upstairs with this person.””
My voice dropped.
“I’m going.””
Nobody stopped me.
Not because they allowed it.
Because they knew they couldn’t.
I walked upstairs with Lily behind me.
“No,” I said gently.
“You stay with Mommy.””
She looked terrified.
“But—”
“I’ll be right back.””
I looked at Sarah.
For once, she didn’t argue.
She just nodded.
I climbed the stairs slowly.
Every step felt heavier.
The hallway was dark.
Too dark.
The door at the end of the hall was open.
My bedroom.
The room where I slept every night.
The room where someone had copied my life.
I entered.
Nothing looked different.
My bed.
My desk.
My clothes.
Then I saw it.
A second phone on the table.
The same model as mine.
The same case.
The same lock screen photo.
A picture of Lily.
My hands went cold.
I picked it up.
It unlocked.
My password worked.
Because whoever owned this phone knew everything about me.
Messages filled the screen.
Hundreds.
Between this phone and another number.
I scrolled.
The first message was from six months earlier.
*He is becoming suspicious.*
Another reply:
*Increase the pressure.*
Another:
*The child must believe.*
I kept scrolling.
Then I saw my name.
*Daniel cannot discover the truth about Lily.*
My heart raced.
More messages.
*Alex is not enough anymore.*
*We need another replacement.*
I stopped.
Another replacement.
There was more than one person.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Nobody.
Only the hallway.
Then the bedroom mirror moved.
Not the mirror itself.
The reflection.
A figure appeared behind me.
I spun around.
Nothing.
My breathing became heavy.
A hidden room.
That was the only explanation.
I walked toward the mirror.
My fingers touched the frame.
It shifted.
A small click.
The mirror opened.
Behind it was a narrow space.
A hidden passage.
And inside…
Photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Photos of me.
My company.
My house.
My family.
Photos taken without my knowledge.
I stepped inside.
The walls were covered with my life.
But then I saw something that made me stop.
A photograph of Lily.
Not recent.
A baby photo.
Beside it was a note.
I picked it up.
The handwriting was familiar.
Mine.
Except I had never written it.
*She was never supposed to be yours.*
My hands shook.
Behind the note was another picture.
A hospital room.
Sarah holding a newborn baby.
And beside her…
a man.
A man who looked exactly like me.
Not Alex.
Not the stranger downstairs.
Another man.
I heard a voice behind me.
“You finally found it.””
I turned.
The man from upstairs stood in the hidden doorway.
He was wearing my clothes.
My watch.
Even my wedding ring.
My breath caught.
Because he didn’t just look like me.
He looked like an older version of me.
A version that had lived a completely different life.
“Who are you?””
He smiled sadly.
“That’s the question everyone asks.””
I stepped back.
“Answer me.””
He looked at the photograph in my hand.
“You want the truth about Lily?””
“Yes.””
His expression changed.
“You’re not ready.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He walked closer.
“Because the truth will destroy the one thing you still believe.””
“What?””
He looked directly into my eyes.
“That you are Lily’s father.””
The world went silent.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
He didn’t argue.
He just handed me another document.
A DNA test.
My name.
Lily’s name.
The result was visible.
*0% Biological Match.*
I stared at the paper.
“No.””
The man whispered:
“Daniel…”
I looked up.
“What?””
His eyes were filled with something I didn’t expect.
Pity.
“You were never replaced.””
A pause.
“You were created.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
He stepped closer.
And said the words that changed everything.
“Because the man who raised you…”
May you like
He pointed at the photograph.
“Wasn’t your father either.””
