Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For a moment, nobody moved.

The rain outside became louder.

Or maybe the room had simply become too quiet.

I looked at Lily.

My little girl.

The same child who used to hide behind my legs when strangers came to the house.

The same child who cried when a bird hit the window.

Now she was standing there, holding my hand, looking at a man who was supposed to be buried six years ago.

“Grandpa told Mommy to lock me away.””

Her words replayed in my mind.

Over and over.

I looked at Sarah.

She didn’t deny it.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Not the lies.

Not the secret.

The fact that my wife could stand there and let our daughter be terrified.

“Sarah,” I whispered.

“What is going on?””

She looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Desperation.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re right. I don’t understand.””

I pointed toward the man standing near the staircase.

“Because six years ago, I watched your father’s coffin being lowered into the ground.””

The older man smiled slightly.

“Funerals are easy to arrange.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He stepped into the light.

The years had changed him.

His hair was thinner.

His face was older.

But there was no doubt.

It was him.

Richard Hayes.

Sarah’s father.

A powerful businessman who had built an empire before disappearing from the public eye.

A man everyone believed had died after a sudden illness.

A man whose death had been reported across the city.

I remembered standing beside Sarah at the funeral.

Holding her hand.

Comforting her while she cried.

All those years…

She knew.

She knew he was alive.

“You lied to me,” I said.

Sarah’s eyes filled slightly.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Protect me?””

My voice rose.

“You brought a supposedly dead man into my house. You locked our daughter in a room. You had another man hiding behind my curtains. And you call that protecting me?””

Richard watched me calmly.

“You’re emotional.””

I turned toward him.

“My daughter was terrified.””

“She is still alive.””

The way he said it made my blood boil.

I stepped forward.

Michael immediately moved between us.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“Move.””

“Listen first.””

“I don’t want explanations from people who broke into my home.””

Michael lowered his voice.

“Your anger is exactly what they expected.””

I froze.

“They?””

He glanced at Sarah.

Then Richard.

And I realized something.

Michael was afraid of them.

Not me.

Richard walked toward the kitchen table.

“You have always been impulsive.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t know me.””

A faint smile crossed his face.

“I know more about you than you think.””

He picked up the folder Sarah had shown me earlier.

“You built your company using my investment.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Sarah looked away.

Richard continued.

“You think you created everything alone?””

My mind raced.

Years ago, when my company was just beginning, I received a large private investment.

I was told it came from an anonymous businessman who believed in my vision.

I never knew who it was.

“You were behind that?””

Richard nodded.

“And in return, I expected loyalty.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Is this about money?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

Nobody answered.

That silence terrified me.

I pulled Lily closer.

“Whatever this is, my daughter has nothing to do with it.””

Richard looked at Lily.

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something cold.

Calculating.

“She has everything to do with it.””

I felt my body tense.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You’re going to tell me everything.””

She took a breath.

Then she looked at Lily.

“Lily was never supposed to know.””

My heart sank.

“Know what?””

Michael spoke quietly.

“The truth about her birth.””

The room stopped.

I looked at him.

“What?””

Lily looked up at me.

Confused.

“Daddy?””

I forced myself to stay calm.

“Don’t worry, sweetheart.””

But inside, everything was collapsing.

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

She looked at Richard.

He gave a small nod.

Like he was allowing her to speak.

That made me hate him even more.

Sarah’s voice became quiet.

“Before Lily was born, there was a problem.””

“What problem?””

She swallowed.

“A problem with the family.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

Richard interrupted.

“You married into a world you knew nothing about.””

I looked at him.

“I married Sarah.””

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

“You married an opportunity.””

Sarah flinched.

“Dad, stop.””

I noticed it.

A tiny reaction.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

I looked at Sarah.

“You’re scared of him.””

She didn’t answer.

That was my answer.

I turned to Michael.

“Who are you?””

He stayed silent for a few seconds.

Then he reached into his jacket.

I immediately moved Lily behind me.

“Relax,” he said.

He pulled out a photograph.

An old photograph.

He placed it on the table.

I picked it up.

And my entire world shifted.

It showed Sarah.

Years younger.

Holding a baby.

Beside her was Michael.

My hand started shaking.

“What is this?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael said:

“That baby was Lily.””

I stared at the photo.

“No.””

My voice came out smaller than I expected.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Sarah looked at me.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked down.

“After everything was over.””

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

“Everything was over?””

I looked around the room.

“At what point did you plan to tell me? After locking our daughter away? After pretending your father was dead?””

Sarah stepped closer.

“Daniel, please.””

I backed away.

“Don’t.””

The word hurt her.

Good.

Because I was hurting too.

Then Lily spoke.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

She was crying.

“Am I bad?””

My anger disappeared instantly.

“What?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Grandpa said people would leave if they knew about me.””

My heart broke.

I knelt beside her.

“Listen to me.””

I held her face gently.

“You are the best thing that ever happened to me.””

She cried harder.

“Then why does Mommy hide me?””

I looked up at Sarah.

She had tears in her eyes now.

But I couldn’t tell if they were real.

Before I could answer, a sound came from the hallway.

A phone ringing.

Everyone froze.

Michael reached into his pocket.

But it wasn’t his.

Sarah looked at the table.

Her phone was ringing.

She picked it up.

The color drained from her face when she saw the screen.

“What is it?”” Richard asked.

Sarah didn’t answer.

She just stared.

I watched her expression change.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Sarah?””

Slowly, she turned the phone around.

The caller ID was visible.

A name.

A name that made Michael step backward.

A name that made Richard’s face lose all confidence.

A name that I had never seen before.

*LILY’S REAL FATHER.*

I looked at my daughter.

Then at Sarah.

And I realized the truth was much bigger than a hidden man in my house.

May you like

Because someone else had been watching us the entire time.

And they were finally calling back.
