Chapter 9: The Original Man
The paper shook in my hand.
Not because of fear.
Because I was finally tired of being confused.
Every person in that house had taken a piece of my life and hidden it from me.
My wife.
Her father.
The man who looked like me.
The man who claimed he knew the truth.
And now a message written by someone calling me a “version.””
I looked at Richard.
“What does this mean?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I stepped closer.
“What does VERSION ONE mean?””
Richard’s face had lost its usual control.
For the first time since I met him, he looked like a man trapped by his own secrets.
Sarah whispered:
“Dad…”
Richard looked at her.
“Don’t.””
But Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“No more.””
She looked at me.
“Daniel deserves the truth.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
Sarah looked at Lily.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
I watched my wife take a breath.
Then she finally said the words I had been waiting for.
“Daniel… you were not born Daniel Carter.””
The room went silent.
Even Lily stopped moving.
I stared at Sarah.
“What?””
She looked down.
“Your name was changed.””
My mind rejected it.
“No.””
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
I looked at Ethan.
He didn’t look surprised.
Because he already knew.
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“I knew before I met you.””
My anger returned.
“And you said nothing?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Every time I got close, Richard moved you away.””
I looked at Richard.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
I walked toward him.
“Why did you change my name?””
Richard looked at me for a long moment.
Then he finally spoke.
“Because you were the only one who survived.””
That sentence made no sense.
“Survived what?””
Richard looked toward the dark windows.
“The experiment.””
Nobody spoke.
I almost laughed.
An experiment.
It sounded impossible.
Crazy.
But after everything I had seen that night…
I wasn’t sure what impossible meant anymore.
“What experiment?””
Richard sat down slowly.
For the first time, he looked old.
“We needed someone who could disappear.””
I stared.
“Disappear?””
“Someone with no history.””
Sarah whispered:
“Dad…”
Richard continued.
“Your parents were part of a program.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“My parents?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I remembered my childhood.
A small house.
My father teaching me how to ride a bike.
My mother making pancakes every Sunday.
Those memories were real.
Weren’t they?
Richard looked at me.
“You were given a new identity.””
My voice became quiet.
“So my entire life…”
He nodded.
“Was built.””
The words hurt more than I expected.
Because I wasn’t just losing a secret.
I was losing myself.
I looked at Lily.
She was watching me with scared eyes.
I immediately went to her.
I knelt down.
“Sweetheart.””
She touched my face.
“Are you still Daddy?””
The question broke me.
I held her hand.
“Yes.””
“But are you?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
Because that was the only answer that mattered.
I didn’t know who created me.
I didn’t know why.
But I knew who I loved.
I stood up.
“Enough about me.””
Everyone looked at me.
I pointed toward Lily.
“What was the reason for all of this?””
Ethan answered.
“Because Lily was the only person who could expose them.””
“Expose who?””
Richard looked away.
“The people who funded everything.””
I frowned.
“Everything?””
Ethan nodded.
“Your identity. The replacements. The surveillance.””
I looked at Alex.
“Why was he made?””
Alex had been silent the entire time.
Now he finally spoke.
“Because Richard believed Daniel would eventually remember.””
I stared at him.
“Remember what?””
Alex looked at me.
“That you weren’t created.””
A pause.
“You were hidden.””
I felt a chill.
“What’s the difference?””
Alex’s expression became serious.
“You were not a copy.””
He pointed at me.
“You were the original.””
The room went silent.
I looked at the paper again.
VERSION ONE.
My hands tightened.
“Then who are the others?””
Nobody answered.
Until the front door exploded open.
Everyone jumped.
A group of men entered.
Not police.
Not security.
They moved like they had done this before.
Michael immediately pushed Lily behind him.
Sarah grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
I looked at the doorway.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Calm.
Wearing a dark suit.
He looked around the room.
Then smiled.
“Finally.””
Nobody spoke.
His eyes landed on me.
“There you are.””
I felt something strange.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Like I had seen him before.
But I knew I hadn’t.
He looked at Richard.
“You failed.””
Richard stood.
“You weren’t supposed to come here.””
The man smiled.
“You should know better than anyone.””
Then he looked at me.
“Your memories were never the problem.””
I froze.
“What?””
He walked closer.
“The problem was that you started becoming yourself again.””
My heart raced.
I looked at Sarah.
She looked terrified.
“Who is he?””
Sarah whispered:
“The person my father worked for.””
The man smiled.
“My name is Victor.””
He looked at Lily.
“And I’ve come to take back what belongs to us.””
I stepped in front of my daughter.
“She belongs to nobody.””
Victor smiled.
“That’s exactly what makes you dangerous.””
I looked around.
Nobody moved.
Nobody challenged him.
Not Richard.
Not Alex.
Not Ethan.
Nobody.
And that told me something.
Victor was the person everyone feared.
“What do you want?””
Victor looked at me.
“You.””
I laughed.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
He reached into his coat.
And pulled out an old photograph.
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
My breath disappeared.
The photograph showed a young man.
A woman.
And a baby.
The young man was me.
But not the me I remembered.
The woman was someone I had never seen.
And the baby…
was Lily.
I looked up.
“That’s impossible.””
Victor smiled.
“No.””
His voice became quiet.
“That’s the truth you were never allowed to remember.””
I looked at Sarah.
She was crying.
“Daniel…”
I couldn’t speak.
Because something inside my mind shifted.
A memory.
A sound.
A hospital room.
A woman’s voice.
A promise.
Then another memory.
A little girl crying.
A man taking her away.
And my own voice screaming:
“Bring my daughter back.””
I stepped backward.
The memories weren’t fake.
They were buried.
Victor watched me carefully.
“You’re remembering.””
I looked at him.
“What did you do to me?””
He smiled.
“Nothing.””
A pause.
“Your own mind protected you.””
I looked at Lily.
She was staring at me.
Afraid.
Confused.
I walked toward her.
But before I reached her, the lights suddenly returned.
And the mansion security system came alive.
A message appeared on every screen.
Not from Victor.
Not from Richard.
From someone else.
A video started playing.
The person on the screen looked directly at me.
And I froze.
Because he had my face.
But older.
Much older.
The man smiled.
“Daniel.””
Everyone in the room stopped breathing.
The older version of me looked into the camera.
“If you’re watching this…”
He paused.
“Then they failed to erase you.””
I stared at the screen.
My own face.
My own voice.
My own eyes.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“Remember this.””
A pause.
“Lily is not your daughter.””
My heart stopped.
The older version of me smiled sadly.
“She is the daughter you lost.””
The screen went black.
And the final message appeared.
*PROJECT CARTER: MEMORY RESTORATION COMPLETE.*
I looked at Lily.
May you like
And for the first time…
I remembered her before I knew her.
