Chapter 6: The Stranger Who Knew My Life

The man standing at the bottom of the stairs smiled.

My smile.

Not a similar one.

Not a coincidence.

The same slight curve of the lips I made when I was trying to hide anger.

The same expression Lily had seen thousands of times.

Except it wasn’t me.

My body reacted before my mind could.

I stepped in front of Lily.

“Stay behind me.””

She grabbed my shirt.

“Daddy…”

“I’m here.””

The stranger tilted his head.

“That’s something I used to say.””

My blood ran cold.

His voice was different now.

No recording.

No hidden camera.

No distance.

He sounded exactly like someone who had studied me for years.

Because he had.

I looked at Sarah.

“Who is he?””

She couldn’t answer.

Her face had gone completely pale.

Richard, however, looked calm again.

Too calm.

“You weren’t supposed to come back tonight.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew he was here.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

The anger inside me burned hotter.

“You knew someone was pretending to be me?””

“He was not pretending.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Richard looked at the man.

“He was becoming you.””

The room felt colder.

The stranger walked closer.

Michael immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

The stranger stopped.

Then he smiled.

“You still protect them?””

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“I’m protecting Lily.””

The stranger laughed softly.

“No. You’re protecting your guilt.””

I looked at Michael.

“What does he mean?””

Michael looked away.

Another secret.

Another person who knew more than me.

I had spent years thinking my family was built on trust.

Now I realized it was built on things everyone decided to hide.

The stranger looked at me.

“You want answers?””

I didn’t move.

“I want my daughter away from all of you.””

A small smile appeared on his face.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The Daniel Carter everyone knows.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“You don’t know me.””

He stepped closer.

“I know you better than you know yourself.””

I almost laughed.

“You’ve been spying on me.””

“No.””

His voice became quiet.

“I’ve been living as you.””

The words landed like a punch.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Lily buried her face against me.

I looked at the man.

“How?””

He glanced at Richard.

“Ask him.””

I turned.

Richard said nothing.

“Tell me.””

Still nothing.

My patience disappeared.

“Tell me!””

My voice echoed through the house.

Richard finally sighed.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then understand this.””

He looked at Lily.

“Everything that happened tonight started years ago.””

I held my daughter tighter.

“Because of her?””

“Because of what she represents.””

I shook my head.

“She is a child.””

Richard’s expression didn’t change.

“To you.””

That sentence made me sick.

I looked at Sarah.

“Did you know about this?””

She started crying.

“I knew about the plan.””

The honesty shocked me.

“What plan?””

Sarah looked at the floor.

“The plan to replace you.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

The stranger did.

“Because Daniel Carter was becoming impossible to control.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

He walked around the room slowly.

Like he owned it.

“You built a company. You gained influence. People trusted you.””

I frowned.

“So?””

“So you started asking questions.””

I thought back.

The strange documents.

The hidden accounts.

The missing information about Sarah’s family.

The secrets.

“What questions?””

The stranger stopped.

“About where your money came from.””

I looked at Richard.

The room became silent.

Richard’s face hardened.

“You were never supposed to find out.””

“Find out what?””

Michael spoke.

“Daniel…”

I turned toward him.

“What?””

His voice was low.

“Your company wasn’t built with a normal investment.””

I already knew that.

But hearing it again made it worse.

“It was connected to Richard’s organization.””

Richard corrected him.

“My organization.””

Michael ignored him.

“And that organization wasn’t just business.””

I stared at Sarah.

“You knew.””

She nodded slowly.

“I knew some of it.””

“Some?””

She wiped her tears.

“My father controlled everything.””

Richard looked annoyed.

“Careful.””

Sarah looked at him.

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But she was finally brave enough to say it.

“My father controlled my life. He controlled my choices. He controlled who I married.””

I froze.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t meet you by accident.””

The words hurt.

Even though I expected them.

They still hurt.

I whispered:

“So our marriage…”

She closed her eyes.

“Started as a plan.””

Lily looked up.

“Mommy?””

Sarah immediately broke.

“No, baby…”

But it was too late.

My daughter had heard enough.

I looked at Sarah.

“What was Lily?””

Sarah’s tears fell.

“She was the only thing I did for myself.””

Nobody spoke.

The stranger laughed quietly.

“Is that what you tell yourself?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Shut up.””

“You ran away because you thought Daniel could protect you.””

I looked at him.

“Who are you?””

This time, he answered.

“My name is Alex.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way Sarah reacted did.

She looked terrified.

“Alex…”

“Yes.””

He smiled.

“The man who was supposed to replace Daniel.””

I stared.

“Replace me?””

Alex nodded.

“Richard needed someone who could become you.””

I looked at Richard.

“And he found him?””

Richard said nothing.

Alex continued.

“They studied you for years.””

A chill went through me.

“Years?””

“Your habits. Your voice. Your expressions. Your schedule.””

He pointed toward me.

“The coffee you drink. The way you tie your shoes. The words you use when Lily wakes up crying.””

I felt sick.

Because he wasn’t lying.

He knew.

He knew things only I should know.

“How did you get into my house?””

Alex smiled.

“Because someone inside let me in.””

I turned slowly.

Sarah looked away.

My heart sank.

“Sarah?””

She whispered:

“I was trying to stop him.””

“By letting him inside?””

“I thought I could control it.””

I stared at her.

“You thought you could control a man pretending to be me?””

Her silence answered.

Then Lily spoke.

Very softly.

“Daddy.””

I looked down.

“What?””

She pointed at Alex.

“He’s not the one who scared me the most.””

Everyone froze.

I knelt beside her.

“What do you mean?””

She looked toward the staircase.

“He came at night.””

My eyes followed hers.

“Who?””

She swallowed.

“The other Daddy.””

My blood ran cold.

Alex’s smile disappeared.

Richard looked suddenly alarmed.

“What other Daddy?””

Lily pointed upward.

“He was already here before Alex.””

Nobody moved.

Michael whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

But Lily shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“He told me Alex was a bad copy.””

I looked at Alex.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Not pretending.

Not acting.

Actually afraid.

I stood up.

“Who is he?””

Alex didn’t answer.

Richard looked toward the upstairs hallway.

Then quietly said:

“There was never supposed to be another one.””

A sound came from above.

A phone vibrating.

Then a voice.

My voice.

Coming from the second floor.

“Daniel.””

Everyone looked up.

The voice continued.

“You should have stayed on your business trip.””

My blood froze.

Because the voice sounded exactly like mine.

May you like

And this time…

even Alex looked scared.
