Chapter 4: The Call From the Past

The phone kept ringing.

Nobody moved.

Not Sarah.

Not Richard.

Not Michael.

Not me.

The name glowing on the screen seemed impossible.

*LILY’S REAL FATHER.*

My eyes stayed fixed on those words.

I felt like the room had tilted beneath my feet.

I looked at Sarah.

“Answer it.””

She didn’t move.

“Sarah.””

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

“I can explain.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Explain?””

My voice cracked.

“There is a person calling you who claims to be our daughter’s father, and you want to explain?””

Lily stood beside me, holding my hand.

She didn’t understand everything.

But she understood fear.

And she was afraid.

Sarah looked at her.

Then quickly looked away.

That hurt more than any confession.

“Answer the phone,” I said again.

Richard stepped forward.

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“What did you say?””

“You don’t know who is on the other end.””

I stared at him.

“That’s exactly why she needs to answer.””

Michael shook his head.

“Daniel, wait.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because if that person is calling now, it means they know everything changed tonight.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“Who is this person?””

Nobody answered.

That was becoming a pattern.

Everyone in this house knew the truth except me.

Sarah finally pressed the answer button.

She lifted the phone to her ear.

“Hello?””

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man’s voice came through the speaker.

“Sarah.””

Her face turned pale.

The voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You finally let him find out.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

The man laughed softly.

“You always have a choice.””

I stepped closer.

“Who is this?””

The voice stopped.

Then the man said my name.

“Daniel Carter.””

Hearing my name from a stranger made my skin crawl.

“You know who I am.””

“I know exactly who you are.””

“Then tell me who you are.””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m the reason your daughter is alive.””

My stomach twisted.

I looked at Lily.

“What does that mean?””

The man continued.

“Ask Sarah about the night Lily was born.””

Sarah’s eyes filled with panic.

“Don’t do this.””

The man ignored her.

“Ask her why she ran.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Ran from what?””

She lowered the phone.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I pointed at the phone.

“Put him on speaker.””

She hesitated.

Then slowly did it.

The man’s voice filled the room.

“Good. Everyone should hear this.””

Richard’s expression changed.

For the first time that night, he looked nervous.

The man continued.

“Six years ago, Sarah was supposed to disappear with Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Sarah whispered:

“That’s not true.””

The man laughed.

“Isn’t it?””

I looked at my wife.

“Sarah?””

She looked broken.

Not cold.

Not confident.

Broken.

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

She didn’t answer.

The man did.

“Her father.””

Everyone looked at Richard.

The older man’s face hardened.

“Enough.””

The voice on the phone became sharper.

“You spent years controlling everyone around you, Richard. You don’t get to pretend anymore.””

I stared at Richard.

“You threatened your own daughter?””

He said nothing.

And somehow, that silence told me enough.

Lily moved closer to me.

“Daddy?””

I immediately turned.

“I’m here.””

“Are we leaving?””

The question nearly destroyed me.

“Yes.””

I picked her up.

“We’re leaving.””

But before I could move, Richard spoke.

“You can’t.””

I stopped.

“Try me.””

He pointed toward the table.

“You think walking out solves this?””

“I don’t care.””

“You should.””

His voice became colder.

“Because if you leave tonight, you lose everything.””

I laughed.

“Money?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Lily.

“Her.””

I tightened my hold on my daughter.

“You will never touch her.””

Richard’s expression remained calm.

“You still don’t understand.””

Sarah suddenly stepped between us.

“Dad, stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

It was the first time all night she had stood against him.

Richard stared at his daughter.

“You’re choosing him?””

Sarah’s voice trembled.

“I’m choosing Lily.””

The words surprised everyone.

Especially me.

Richard’s face darkened.

“You should have chosen years ago.””

Sarah looked down.

“I know.””

The phone remained on speaker.

The unknown man spoke again.

“Daniel, you need to hear the rest.””

I looked at the phone.

“What rest?””

“The truth about Lily.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was half asleep against my shoulder now.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

“I already know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice softened.

“Because Lily is not the secret.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“The secret is why everyone wanted to control her.””

A silence followed.

Then Michael spoke.

“She was the evidence.””

I turned.

“What evidence?””

Michael looked at Sarah.

She looked away.

Richard suddenly moved toward him.

“You’ve said enough.””

Michael stepped back.

“No.””

His voice was different now.

Stronger.

“I’m done protecting you.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“You know what happens if you talk.””

Michael looked at Lily.

“I know.””

Then he looked at me.

“And I know what happens if I don’t.””

I felt like I was standing in the middle of a storm.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had reasons.

But my daughter was the one paying the price.

I walked toward the front door.

This time, nobody stopped me.

Until Sarah spoke.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t turn.

“What?””

Her voice broke.

“If you leave, you’ll never forgive me.””

I stood there.

Because she was right.

I probably wouldn’t.

But I also knew something else.

If I stayed, Lily might never forgive me.

I opened the door.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I looked down.

One photo.

Attached.

My blood ran cold.

It was a picture of Lily.

Taken tonight.

Inside the mansion.

While she was locked in the kitchen.

But the person who took the photo was standing right beside her.

The message underneath was only one sentence.

*YOU STILL DON’T KNOW WHO YOU BROUGHT INTO YOUR FAMILY.*

I looked up slowly.

Everyone was watching me.

Sarah.

Richard.

Michael.

Then I looked at the photo again.

Because there was something in the background.

Something I hadn’t noticed before.

A reflection in the kitchen window.

Another person.

Someone who had been inside the house the entire time.

Someone none of them had mentioned.

I whispered:

“Who else was here?””

Nobody answered.

But Lily suddenly lifted her head.

Her face went pale.

And she whispered:

“Daddy…”

I looked down.

“What?””

She pointed at the photo.

At the reflection.

“That’s the man who comes to my room when you’re not home.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Because the person in the reflection…

was wearing my clothes.
