Chapter 9: The Mother Who Chose the Empire

The screen flickered.

Eleanor Sterling’s face remained calm.

Too calm.

The same woman who had called me in the middle of the night.

The same woman who had warned me to protect my children.

The same woman who had spoken about regret.

Now she was sitting inside the security room of the archive, watching us like she had planned every step.

Richard stared at the monitor.

His voice was barely audible.

“Mom…”

Eleanor looked at him.

For a moment, something like sadness crossed her face.

Then it disappeared.

“Hello, Richard.””

The room felt smaller.

Colder.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked just as shocked as we were.

Even Jonathan seemed confused.

“You knew?”” Jonathan asked.

Eleanor’s eyes moved toward him.

“You were always too impatient.””

Jonathan’s face hardened.

“You knew about the archive?””

“I built the archive.””

Silence.

Richard stepped closer to the screen.

“Why?””

Eleanor looked at him.

And for the first time, I saw something behind her expression.

Not cruelty.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Because I was trying to stop this before it happened.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You created this.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I prevented something much worse.””

I shook my head.

“By destroying my family?””

Eleanor looked at me.

“Claire, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even myself.

“You don’t get to call me like you’re protecting me after everything.””

The room went silent.

“You knew about the inheritance.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Jonathan was manipulating Richard.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Chloe was lying.””

Eleanor hesitated.

“Yes.””

Richard closed his eyes.

The answer hurt him more than he expected.

“How long?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“Since before your divorce.””

Richard’s face changed.

“You watched me destroy my marriage.””

“I tried to stop you.””

“No.””

His voice grew louder.

“You let me believe Claire was the problem.””

Eleanor looked away.

Because that was the truth.

She had allowed it.

Maybe she hadn’t created the fire.

But she had watched the flames grow.

Richard turned away.

For the first time, I saw him understand something painful.

Betrayal wasn’t always an action.

Sometimes it was silence.

“Why?”” he asked.

Eleanor took a breath.

“Because I knew if you learned the truth too early, you would make the same mistake your father made.””

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the old documents around us.

“Your father spent his entire life trying to control the inheritance.””

She paused.

“He believed power was something you protected from people.””

Her eyes moved toward me.

“But your grandfather believed power was something you protected people from.””

I looked at the documents.

The words suddenly made sense.

The inheritance wasn’t about money.

It was about responsibility.

Eleanor continued.

“Charles Sterling became obsessed with ownership. He believed if he controlled every share, he controlled the future.””

“And you?””

Richard asked.

“What did you believe?””

Eleanor’s expression broke slightly.

“I believed I could fix him.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew the truth about people like that.

You cannot save someone who believes they don’t need saving.

“But you failed,” Richard said.

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

“I failed.””

Jonathan stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at him.

His anger had replaced his confusion.

“You’re acting like you’re innocent.””

Eleanor looked at her son.

“You’re not wrong.””

Jonathan laughed.

“Finally.””

“But you are not the victim.””

His smile faded.

“You think Richard took everything from you.””

Jonathan said nothing.

“But you never asked why.””

Jonathan’s eyes narrowed.

Eleanor continued.

“Your father didn’t choose Richard because he loved him more.””

Richard looked surprised.

“He chose Richard because Richard earned it.””

Jonathan’s face darkened.

“He was lucky.””

“No.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“He worked.””

The words hit Jonathan harder than an insult.

Because they challenged the story he had spent years telling himself.

“I gave you everything,” Eleanor said.

“I gave you opportunities.””

Jonathan laughed.

“Opportunities?””

His voice became bitter.

“You gave him the company.””

“I gave Richard responsibility.””

“You gave him power.””

“No.””

Eleanor looked directly at him.

“I gave him a choice.””

Silence.

Then Jonathan said:

“And he chose Claire.””

I felt the room shift.

Because suddenly I understood.

Jonathan’s anger wasn’t only about the company.

It was personal.

He believed Richard had stolen the life he deserved.

Including me.

Richard noticed it too.

“You never cared about the inheritance.””

Jonathan looked at him.

“You don’t know anything about what I cared about.””

“You wanted Claire.””

Jonathan didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My stomach tightened.

All those years.

The family dinners.

The friendly conversations.

The advice.

The kindness.

Was any of it real?

Jonathan looked at me.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

I almost laughed.

“You destroyed my marriage.””

“I destroyed Richard’s illusion.””

“You destroyed my children’s family.””

His expression changed.

For a second, he looked ashamed.

Then it vanished.

“I needed Richard to lose control.””

“Why?””

“Because a man like Richard only learns when something is taken from him.””

I stared at him.

“You sound exactly like him.””

That stopped him.

Because it was true.

Jonathan and Richard had spent years fighting to prove they were different.

But they were both trapped by the same thing.

Pride.

The need to win.

The need to be right.

Then the archive doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A security team entered.

Richard immediately moved in front of me.

But the guards didn’t point at us.

They walked toward Eleanor.

One of them spoke.

“Mrs. Sterling, we have secured the documents.””

Richard looked confused.

“What documents?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

The guard handed her a folder.

She opened it.

Then looked at Richard.

“This is why I called Claire.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Eleanor pulled out a document.

A medical record.

Again.

Another test.

But this one was different.

She placed it on the table.

Richard picked it up.

His face changed.

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Richard looked at me.

His eyes were filled with disbelief.

“It’s a DNA test.””

“Whose?””

He couldn’t answer.

Eleanor did.

“Matthew and Lily’s.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Your children were tested years ago.””

I felt my hands go cold.

“Why?””

“Because after Charles died, I discovered someone had been investigating your children.””

Richard looked at the paper.

“The results?””

Eleanor took a breath.

“Confirmed.””

Confirmed what?

Then she said:

“Matthew and Lily are the rightful heirs.””

The room became silent.

Even Jonathan looked shocked.

Richard stared at the report.

“My children?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt tears building.

Not because of the inheritance.

Not because of the company.

Because my children had spent their lives being treated like they were less important.

When they were the very thing everyone was fighting over.

Richard sat down slowly.

His hands trembled.

“I almost lost them.””

No one answered.

Because it was true.

Eleanor looked at him.

“That is why I called Claire.””

Richard looked up.

“Why not me?””

Her expression became painful.

“Because I knew you would choose the company first.””

The words destroyed him.

Because deep down, he knew.

I saw it.

The realization.

The regret.

Not the dramatic kind.

The kind that arrives when someone finally sees the damage they caused.

Then Daniel suddenly looked at his phone.

His face changed.

“What?””

Richard stood.

“What happened?””

Daniel turned the screen around.

A news alert.

*STERLING GLOBAL OWNERSHIP CRISIS: EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING CALLED AFTER INTERNAL LEAK*

Richard frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

He turned the phone.

“Look at who requested the meeting.””

Richard read the name.

And his expression changed.

Because the person trying to take control of Sterling Global wasn’t Jonathan.

Wasn’t Chloe.

Wasn’t Eleanor.

It was someone none of us expected.

Someone who had been invisible until now.

Someone who had access to every secret.

Every document.

Every weakness.

The name appeared on the screen.

And Richard whispered:

“No…”

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

Richard stared at the phone.

Then said:

“The person who trained me to build this empire.””

A pause.

“The person who taught Jonathan how to manipulate everyone.””

The screen showed the name.

Charles Sterling.

Richard’s dead father.

But beneath the name was one terrifying detail.

*Emergency authorization signed three weeks ago.*

Three weeks.

The same time everything started.

I looked at Eleanor.

She had gone completely pale.

Because she understood before anyone else.

Charles Sterling wasn’t dead.

May you like

And somehow…

he had been controlling everything from the beginning.
