Chapter 6: The Woman Who Buried the Past
I didn’t move.
For several seconds, I stood behind the curtain, barely breathing, watching the black car parked across the street.
The engine was off.
The windows were tinted.
But I knew.
Someone was inside.
Someone was watching.
The old version of me would have panicked.
The old Claire would have called Richard.
She would have expected him to fix it.
After all, that was what he had always done.
When the pipes broke, Richard called someone.
When the house needed security, Richard hired someone.
When problems appeared, he believed money could make them disappear.
But that night, I understood something.
Money had created the very danger I was running from.
I stepped away from the window.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Then I walked toward my children’s room.
Matthew was reading a book to Lily.
Their voices were soft.
Normal.
A world away from mine.
“Mom?””
Matthew looked up.
I forced a smile.
“Hey, you two.””
Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit.
“Are we staying here forever?””
I sat beside them.
“I don’t know.””
Children deserved honesty.
But they also deserved peace.
So I chose my words carefully.
“We’re going to make sure we’re safe.””
Matthew noticed my expression.
“Is someone hurting us?””
My heart tightened.
“No.””
It came out too quickly.
He noticed.
Children always notice.
I reached out and touched his hair.
“Sometimes adults have problems they need to solve.””
“Like Dad?””
The question landed harder than any accusation.
I looked at him.
“What makes you say that?””
He shrugged.
“Dad always had problems.””
A small silence followed.
Then he whispered:
“But he always came home before.””
I looked away.
Because that was the part I couldn’t explain.
His father used to come home.
Until he didn’t.
That night, after the children fell asleep, I called the only person who could answer my questions.
Eleanor Sterling.
She answered after one ring.
“I was wondering when you would call.””
Her voice sounded tired.
Not like the powerful woman who appeared in magazines beside her billionaire son.
Just tired.
“You knew I would?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because you’re more like your grandfather than you realize.””
I sat down.
“I need answers.””
A long pause.
Then Eleanor said:
“You deserve them.””
I closed my eyes.
“Start with the truth.””
She exhaled.
“Twenty-five years ago, Richard’s father, Charles Sterling, built Sterling Global with three partners.””
“And my grandfather was one of them.””
“Yes.””
“Why was his ownership erased?””
Eleanor was silent.
That silence told me everything.
“Eleanor.””
Finally, she spoke.
“Because Charles was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“Losing control.””
I looked at the DNA report on the table.
“He manipulated the agreement.””
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“You knew and did nothing?””
“I was young.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“No.””
A pause.
“I know.””
For the first time, I heard regret in her voice.
Real regret.
“Charles convinced me that protecting the family meant protecting the company.””
“And you believed him.””
“Yes.””
“Until when?””
Eleanor took a shaky breath.
“Until I watched my own son become exactly like him.””
The words stayed between us.
Richard.
The man I loved.
The man who hurt me.
The man who never realized he was repeating the same mistakes he hated.
“Why did you call me?””
“Because Chloe’s child was never about inheritance.””
I looked up.
“What do you mean?””
Eleanor lowered her voice.
“Because the Sterling inheritance clause doesn’t recognize a child created through deception.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The original agreement had safeguards.””
“Safeguards?””
“Your grandfather knew powerful people could manipulate bloodlines and ownership. He added conditions.””
I stood.
“What conditions?””
Eleanor answered:
“The rightful heir must be protected by truth, not created through a lie.””
I walked to the window.
The black car was still there.
“So Chloe needed the baby to be Richard’s.””
“Yes.””
“And if it wasn’t?””
“The trust Richard signed becomes vulnerable.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So they used him.””
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Because no matter how angry I was at Richard, he didn’t deserve to be destroyed by people he trusted.
“Who else knows about the inheritance?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“Very few people.””
“Who?””
“Myself.””
“Jonathan.””
“Yes.””
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
I frowned.
“Anyone else?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Chloe.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
“Because Jonathan told her.””
Of course.
Jonathan.
The man behind the curtain.
The person pulling every string.
But one question remained.
“Why did you let him?””
Eleanor didn’t answer immediately.
When she did, her voice broke.
“Because Jonathan is my son too.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The same mistake.
Protecting family.
Even when family was destroying everything.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I wanted to believe her.
But apologies were complicated.
Some apologies came before damage.
Others arrived after everything was broken.
“Where is Jonathan now?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re his mother.””
“Yes.””
“You’re telling me you don’t know?””
Eleanor went quiet.
Then said:
“He disappeared after he realized Richard had discovered the truth.””
My phone suddenly vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A photo.
My apartment building.
Taken minutes earlier.
Then another message.
*Stop asking questions.*
My blood ran cold.
Eleanor heard my silence.
“What happened?””
“Someone knows where I am.””
Her voice changed immediately.
“Claire, listen to me carefully.””
I stood still.
“Leave tonight.””
“What?””
“Do not wait until morning.””
“Where am I supposed to go?””
“Somewhere they cannot predict.””
I looked toward the children’s room.
“I can’t keep running.””
Eleanor’s answer was quiet.
“Then don’t run.””
A pause.
“Fight.””
The call ended.
Twenty minutes later, there was a knock at my door.
I froze.
Nobody knew I was expecting anyone.
I moved quietly toward the entrance.
Another knock.
Then a voice.
“Claire.””
My heart stopped.
Richard.
I looked through the security viewer.
There he was.
Standing outside.
Alone.
No bodyguards.
No assistant.
No confidence.
Just Richard.
The man who had broken my heart.
The man who had chosen another woman.
The man who now looked like he had lost everything.
I opened the door only slightly.
“What are you doing here?””
His eyes met mine.
For once, he had no perfect answer.
“I need to talk to you.””
I almost laughed.
“Now?””
“I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness.””
“No.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
Richard had never been someone who admitted weakness.
Not to me.
Not to anyone.
“What do you want?””
He looked past me.
Toward the apartment.
Toward the place where our children slept.
“I want to protect you.””
I stared at him.
“You had fifteen years to protect us.””
His face changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
“I know.””
The silence between us was unbearable.
Then he said:
“Claire, I know about the inheritance.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
“I know what Jonathan did.””
I stepped back.
“And?””
Richard swallowed.
“And I know you tried to warn me.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered:
“I was wrong.””
The words I had waited years to hear.
The words that came too late.
I looked at him.
“Do you know what hurt the most?””
Richard didn’t answer.
“It wasn’t Chloe.””
His eyes lowered.
“It wasn’t the divorce.””
I held back tears.
“It was watching you look at our children and decide they were less important than someone who lied to you.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice shook.
“You lost your family because of your choices.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
A sound came from inside.
Matthew.
“Mom?””
I turned.
Richard heard it.
His expression broke.
Because for the first time, he understood what he had almost lost forever.
“Can I see them?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
The man standing in front of me was the father of my children.
But he was also the man who abandoned us.
Before I could decide, my phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, not from an unknown number.
From Daniel.
*Claire, don’t let Richard inside.*
I frowned.
A second message arrived.
*There is something he doesn’t know.*
I looked at Richard.
He noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I stared at the screen.
Then at him.
Because suddenly I wasn’t sure who I was supposed to fear.
Richard.
Jonathan.
Chloe.
Or the truth waiting to come out.
The final message from Daniel appeared.
*The DNA test was changed before the hospital received it.*
My heart stopped.
I looked at Richard.
“What if Chloe’s baby was never the only lie?””
May you like
And for the first time since he arrived…
Richard looked afraid.
