Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Heir
Richard Sterling had built an empire by believing one simple rule:
Control the information, and you control the outcome.
For twenty years, he had watched competitors collapse because they reacted too slowly.
He had watched investors panic.
He had watched executives lose their positions because they failed to protect their secrets.
But inside that hospital room, surrounded by the people who had gathered to celebrate his future, Richard felt something he had never felt before.
Uncertainty.
Dr. Evans stood frozen beside the ultrasound machine.
The room that had been filled with laughter moments earlier became painfully quiet.
Chloe was the first person to speak.
“What are you talking about?””
Her voice was softer than usual.
Not confident.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
Richard looked between them.
“Doctor, explain yourself.””
Dr. Evans placed the printed document on the table.
“I received this file through the hospital’s secure system. It contains the genetic profile submitted before the prenatal screening.””
Richard picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
“This is impossible.””
Dr. Evans looked at him.
“Mr. Sterling, the results are very clear.””
Chloe immediately reached for the paper.
“Let me see that.””
Richard pulled it away.
“Chloe.””
For the first time, he didn’t sound protective.
He sounded suspicious.
The room shifted.
His mother, Eleanor Sterling, who had been sitting in the corner wearing a diamond necklace and a proud smile, slowly stood.
“Richard, what is happening?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in the room understood one thing.
The baby they had already named the next Sterling heir was suddenly surrounded by questions.
Chloe placed a hand on her stomach.
“This is some kind of mistake.””
Dr. Evans remained calm.
“Medical records do not usually make mistakes like this.””
She stared at him.
“You’re accusing me?””
“I’m not accusing anyone,” the doctor replied.
“I’m telling you that the genetic information provided does not match the expected results.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Expected results?””
The doctor hesitated.
Then he looked directly at Chloe.
“The father’s DNA profile does not match the pregnancy.””
A gasp moved through the room.
Someone dropped a glass.
It shattered against the marble floor.
Chloe’s face turned pale.
“That’s impossible.””
Richard didn’t move.
The man who had walked into the room expecting applause now stood completely still.
“Run the test again.””
Dr. Evans nodded.
“We can.””
“Do it.””
His voice echoed through the suite.
Everyone stepped back.
Even Chloe.
Because everyone knew Richard Sterling.
They knew the calm businessman.
They knew the ruthless negotiator.
And they knew the most dangerous version of him was the one who stopped speaking.
While the hospital room descended into chaos, my plane crossed above the clouds.
I sat by the window, watching the endless white sky.
For the first time in months, my phone was turned off.
No messages from Richard.
No calls from his assistant.
No accusations.
No apologies that arrived too late.
Just silence.
Matthew was sleeping with his head against the seat.
Lily was drawing pictures in a small notebook the flight attendant gave her.
She looked up at me.
“Mommy?””
“Yes?””
“Are we still a family?””
The question was so innocent that it hurt.
I reached across and held her hand.
“We always will be.””
“But Dad isn’t with us.””
I looked at my son sleeping beside us.
Then back at Lily.
“Sometimes people leave a family before they physically leave.””
She frowned, trying to understand.
“Did Daddy stop loving us?””
I swallowed.
Because children deserve honesty.
But they also deserve protection.
“I think your dad forgot what mattered.””
Lily looked down at her drawing.
It was a picture of four people standing together.
Me.
Richard.
Matthew.
Her.
She had drawn a line through Richard’s figure.
Then she added him back.
Because children don’t understand betrayal.
They only understand love.
And that was the part that broke my heart the most.
Back at Sterling Global Holdings headquarters, Richard’s personal assistant, James, rushed into the executive office.
“Mr. Sterling.””
Richard didn’t look up from his desk.
“Talk.””
James closed the door.
“The hospital situation has become complicated.””
Richard’s fingers stopped moving.
“Meaning?””
James placed a tablet on the desk.
“The board members are asking questions.””
Richard looked at the screen.
Several executives had already seen the news.
Not the full details.
Just rumors.
A private hospital gathering.
A delayed announcement.
An unexpected medical issue.
Richard’s face darkened.
“Who leaked this?””
“No one knows.””
Richard stood.
“This stays contained.””
James hesitated.
“Sir…”
Richard looked at him.
“What?””
“There’s another issue.””
“What issue?””
James took a breath.
“The trust documents.””
Richard’s expression changed.
The forty percent transfer.
The agreement he had signed that morning.
The one that would secure his unborn child’s future.
“The board is reviewing the transfer because it affects company ownership.””
Richard walked toward the window.
Below him, hundreds of employees moved through the building he had created.
A kingdom built from ambition.
A kingdom he had just placed at risk.
“Cancel the trust.””
James looked surprised.
“Sir?””
“You heard me.””
“But the documents were already signed.””
Richard turned around.
“Then find a way.””
James lowered his voice.
“Mr. Sterling, there may be legal consequences.””
Richard said nothing.
Because for the first time, he realized something.
The decision he made that morning had not only hurt Claire.
It had created a weapon pointed directly at him.
Meanwhile, Chloe sat alone in the hospital bathroom.
The expensive maternity dress that had looked perfect hours earlier now felt like a costume.
Her hands shook as she stared at herself in the mirror.
The confident woman who walked into the divorce meeting was gone.
Her phone buzzed.
She looked down.
A message appeared.
Unknown Number:
*You need to fix this before he finds out everything.*
Chloe’s breathing stopped.
Another message arrived.
*I warned you this would happen.*
She quickly deleted the messages.
Then the bathroom door opened.
Richard stood there.
His face was unreadable.
“Who were you texting?””
Chloe froze.
“Nobody.””
Richard stared at her.
“Chloe.””
She forced a smile.
“You’re being paranoid.””
He walked closer.
“I trusted you.””
The words hit her.
Not because they were angry.
Because they were disappointed.
And disappointment from Richard Sterling was more frightening than rage.
“I love you,” she whispered.
Richard looked at her.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Silence.
A long, terrible silence.
Finally, Chloe spoke.
“There has to be an explanation.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
She looked away.
Richard noticed.
And that small movement told him more than any confession could.
“Who is the father?””
Chloe’s eyes widened.
“Richard—”
“Who?””
Her lips trembled.
Then the door opened.
A nurse stepped inside.
“Mr. Sterling?””
Richard turned.
“The doctor is ready for the second test.””
Neither of them moved.
The moment had been interrupted.
But the question remained hanging between them.
Who was the father?
An hour later, the second test began.
And while Richard waited outside the examination room, his phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID made him freeze.
It was his private investigator.
The investigator he had hired months ago.
The one who had been checking Claire.
Richard answered.
“What?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Mr. Sterling, I found something you need to see.””
Richard looked toward the closed hospital door.
“About Chloe?””
A pause.
“No.””
The investigator’s voice became lower.
“About Claire.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“What about her?””
The man hesitated.
“Your ex-wife didn’t leave today because she was broken.””
Richard gripped the phone tighter.
“What are you saying?””
“She left because she already knew.””
The hallway seemed to disappear around him.
“Knew what?””
Another pause.
Then the investigator said:
“She knew about the pregnancy secret before you did.””
Richard’s blood ran cold.
At that exact moment, the hospital doors opened.
Dr. Evans walked out holding a new report.
His face was even paler than before.
“Mr. Sterling…”
Richard looked from the doctor to the phone.
And for the first time in his life, he wondered if the woman he had just lost had been the only person who was actually trying to save him.
Dr. Evans lowered his voice.
“The second test confirms it.””
Richard stared at him.
“Confirms what?””
The doctor looked around to make sure nobody else was listening.
Then he whispered:
“Your wife was never the one who betrayed this family.””
May you like
And inside Richard Sterling’s hand, the phone screen lit up again with one final message from the investigator.
*I found the person Chloe was hiding.*
