Chapter 8: The Name Hidden in the Archives
The words stayed with me long after Daniel ended the call.
*The fake heir was never meant to inherit the empire.*
I sat at the kitchen table, staring at the documents scattered in front of me.
For months, I believed Chloe was the enemy.
I believed she wanted my husband.
My home.
My children’s place in Richard’s life.
And maybe she did.
But now I understood something much more frightening.
Chloe was only a piece on the board.
Someone else was moving the pieces.
Richard stood by the window, his phone still in his hand.
For the first time since I met him, he looked lost.
Not defeated.
Not weak.
Lost.
“Richard.””
He didn’t answer.
“Look at me.””
Slowly, he turned.
His eyes were filled with something I had never seen before.
Regret.
“They used me.””
The sentence was quiet.
Almost like he was admitting it to himself.
I looked at the man who once believed nobody could manipulate him.
“You let them.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
The answer surprised me.
No excuses.
No anger.
No blaming anyone else.
Just acceptance.
“I thought I was protecting my legacy.””
His voice cracked.
“But I was destroying the people who were supposed to inherit it.””
I looked toward the hallway where Matthew and Lily were sleeping.
For years, Richard talked about building something they could be proud of.
A company.
A name.
A future.
But somewhere along the way, he forgot the future wasn’t a building.
It wasn’t shares.
It wasn’t money.
It was the children who called him Dad.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
*I found the archive location. We need to go before Jonathan gets there.*
I showed Richard.
His expression changed.
“Jonathan knows.””
“How?””
“Because Jonathan always knew where the company records were stored.””
I grabbed my coat.
“Then we go now.””
Richard looked at me.
“You’re coming?””
I stared at him.
“I need answers too.””
For a moment, something almost like hope appeared in his eyes.
Then it disappeared.
Because he knew better.
This wasn’t forgiveness.
Not yet.
This was survival.
We drove to the old Sterling family archive building outside the city.
It wasn’t the kind of place people expected a billionaire family to keep important records.
No marble floors.
No security guards.
No impressive entrance.
Just an old brick building hidden behind trees.
Richard parked several yards away.
“Why is it here?””
“My father believed important secrets should never be stored where everyone was looking.””
I looked at him.
“Your father and Jonathan seem to have a lot in common.””
Richard didn’t argue.
Inside, the building smelled like old paper and dust.
Daniel was already there.
When he saw me, he looked relieved.
“You came.””
I nodded.
“What did you find?””
Daniel opened a locked cabinet.
“Everything.””
Inside were hundreds of files.
Old agreements.
Property records.
Family documents.
The history of Sterling Global.
Richard picked up one folder.
His hands stopped moving.
“What?””
He turned it around.
The name on the file made my heart race.
*Claire Bennett Family Trust.*
My maiden name.
I reached for it.
Inside was a letter.
Written decades ago.
My grandfather’s handwriting.
I read the first line.
*To my granddaughter, Claire.*
My breath caught.
“He knew about me?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your grandfather created this file before he died.””
I kept reading.
*If the Sterling family ever tries to erase what belongs to your bloodline, this document will prove the truth.*
My hands shook.
“He knew this would happen.””
Richard looked at the letter.
“He predicted it.””
I continued reading.
*Power attracts people who want ownership without responsibility. Remember this: an empire is not inherited by those who demand it. It belongs to those who protect it.*
I stopped.
Because those words sounded exactly like the warning I had given Richard.
Things acquired through lies often get repaid with an empire.
Maybe I wasn’t threatening him.
Maybe my grandfather’s voice was speaking through me.
Daniel opened another folder.
“This is the original inheritance agreement.””
Richard stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Daniel pointed.
“The company ownership was divided into two parts.””
I looked at the document.
“Two?””
“Yes.””
“Sterling family and Bennett family.””
Richard’s face changed.
“How much?””
Daniel looked at the page.
“Forty percent.””
My heart stopped.
The same number.
The same percentage Richard had tried to give away.
The same number Chloe wanted control over.
Richard whispered:
“They knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“They knew exactly what they were taking.””
A noise came from the hallway.
We all froze.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
Richard immediately moved in front of me.
I almost told him I didn’t need protection.
But I stopped.
Because despite everything…
he was still the father of my children.
The footsteps got closer.
Then a voice echoed through the archive.
“You always were predictable, Richard.””
Jonathan.
Richard’s face hardened.
“Show yourself.””
Jonathan stepped into the room.
He looked calm.
Almost relaxed.
Like he wasn’t walking into a confrontation.
Like he owned the place.
“You found the archive.””
Richard stared at him.
“You knew about this.””
Jonathan smiled slightly.
“I knew before you did.””
“Why?””
Jonathan looked at me.
Not Richard.
Me.
“Because Claire was always the key.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“You used me.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“No.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You were the only thing standing between us and everything we wanted.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You manipulated my wife.””
Jonathan laughed.
“Your wife?””
The word carried a strange bitterness.
“She was never supposed to be yours.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
Jonathan walked toward the documents.
“Do you really think my father chose you because you were special?””
Richard said nothing.
Jonathan continued.
“He chose you because you were easier to control.””
The words hit harder than expected.
Richard stared at him.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
Jonathan picked up the inheritance agreement.
“Your father knew Claire’s family had the legal claim.””
He looked at me.
“But he also knew you loved her.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Jonathan smiled.
“The plan was simple. Richard marries Claire. The Bennett bloodline stays connected to Sterling. Everyone wins.””
Richard looked confused.
“But then?””
“Then you became too powerful.””
Jonathan’s voice became colder.
“You built your own empire. You became someone nobody could control.””
Richard stared.
“So you destroyed my marriage.””
Jonathan shrugged.
“I created a situation where you destroyed it yourself.””
Silence.
Because that was the worst part.
It was true.
Jonathan didn’t force Richard to abandon us.
He only gave him the opportunity.
And Richard took it.
I looked at Jonathan.
“Why Chloe?””
His smile faded.
“Because she was ambitious.””
“And the baby?””
Jonathan looked away.
For the first time, uncertainty appeared.
“The baby was supposed to solve everything.””
“Supposed to?””
Richard noticed.
“You didn’t know?””
Jonathan didn’t answer.
Richard stepped closer.
“You didn’t know whose child it was.””
Jonathan’s silence confirmed it.
The plan had gone wrong.
Chloe had lied to everyone.
Even the person controlling her.
Then Jonathan’s phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
His expression changed.
A message.
One sentence.
I couldn’t see the sender.
But I saw Jonathan’s face.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What happened?”” Richard asked.
Jonathan ignored him.
He turned toward the exit.
Richard grabbed his arm.
“Who sent that?””
Jonathan pulled away.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Jonathan looked at me.
Then at Richard.
Then said:
“The person who started this entire plan…”
A pause.
“…is not Chloe.””
The room went silent.
“Then who?””
Jonathan looked toward the door.
And whispered:
“Someone who has been watching all of us from the beginning.””
Before anyone could move, every light in the archive suddenly shut off.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then a voice came through the security speakers.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that made Richard freeze.
Because it belonged to someone who was supposed to be helping us.
“Claire.””
My blood ran cold.
“Richard.””
The voice continued.
“You finally found the truth.””
The emergency lights flickered on.
And standing on the monitor screen was a live video feed.
A person sitting inside the archive’s security room.
Someone who had access to everything.
Someone who had been one step ahead of us.
Richard stared at the screen.
“No…”
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
His face turned pale.
Then he whispered the name.
“Eleanor.””
His mother.
The woman who called me.
The woman who warned me.
The woman who claimed she wanted to protect us.
On the screen, Eleanor looked directly into the camera.
And said:
“I’m sorry, Claire.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“But if you know the truth now, there’s no reason to keep pretending anymore.””
