Chapter 7: The Child They Tried to Hide
Richard Sterling had always believed fear belonged to other people.
Employees feared losing their jobs.
Competitors feared losing their companies.
Enemies feared losing battles.
But standing in my doorway, staring at the message from Daniel, I saw something I had never seen before.
Richard was afraid.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
“What did Daniel say?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because the truth was, I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
The entire world I had known was built on secrets.
Richard had lied.
Chloe had lied.
Jonathan had lied.
Even Eleanor, who claimed she wanted to fix everything, had hidden the past for decades.
I looked at the man standing in front of me.
“You need to leave.””
His expression changed.
“Claire.””
“No.””
“I came here because—”
“Because you finally found out the truth?””
He stopped.
That silence was enough.
“You didn’t come because you missed us.””
His eyes lowered.
“I do miss you.””
I shook my head.
“Maybe you do now.””
The words hurt him.
I could see it.
But I didn’t take them back.
“Richard, you don’t get to show up after everything falls apart and suddenly become the person you should have been.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
His voice became quiet.
“Yes.””
For a moment, I saw the old Richard.
The man who used to sit beside me on our apartment balcony before money changed everything.
The man who held Matthew for hours when he had a fever.
The man who cried when Lily took her first steps.
That man was still somewhere inside him.
But he was buried beneath pride.
Ambition.
And choices.
“I need to tell you something,” he said.
I crossed my arms.
“What?””
“The DNA report was altered.””
I froze.
“You already knew?””
“No.””
He looked frustrated.
“I found out tonight.””
“How?””
“Daniel discovered it.””
I stared at him.
“So the baby…”
“May not be mine.””
The words hung in the air.
Even after everything, hearing them felt unreal.
Because that child had been the reason he destroyed our family.
The reason he signed away his company.
The reason he looked at Matthew and Lily like they were part of his past.
“Who changed the report?””
Richard shook his head.
“We don’t know.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because Daniel said there is another possibility.””
I waited.
Richard looked at me.
“One that involves you.””
My heart tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, a loud sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Richard immediately turned.
His entire posture changed.
The businessman returned.
Alert.
Focused.
“Are we expecting someone?””
“No.””
He looked toward the window.
Then at me.
“How long has that car been outside?””
I didn’t answer.
His face hardened.
“Claire.””
“Since yesterday.””
His expression darkened.
“You should have called me.””
I almost laughed.
“Why?””
“Because I could have protected you.””
“You couldn’t even protect your own family.””
The words hit him.
But instead of arguing, he accepted them.
And somehow that made it worse.
A few minutes later, Richard stepped away from the window.
“We need to leave.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Now.””
“I’m not going anywhere with you.””
“Claire.””
His voice was urgent.
Not controlling.
Not demanding.
Warning.
“That car wasn’t just watching you.””
I stared.
“How do you know?””
“Because it belongs to Sterling Security.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Richard looked at the street.
“That means someone inside my company is tracking you.””
The room became silent.
Someone inside.
Not a stranger.
Not a random enemy.
Someone close.
Richard grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling Daniel.””
“No.””
He stopped.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Daniel is right, we don’t know who we can trust.””
That sentence surprised me.
Because it was exactly what I had been thinking.
For the first time in months, Richard and I agreed on something.
Neither of us knew who was safe.
I went into the children’s room.
Matthew was awake.
He sat up immediately.
“Mom?””
I smiled softly.
“Hey, buddy.””
He looked behind me.
At Richard.
His expression changed.
“Dad?””
Richard froze.
Because hearing that word from his son sounded like a gift he no longer deserved.
“Hey, Matthew.””
My son looked confused.
“Are you coming home?””
Richard opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I watched the pain cross his face.
Finally, he answered:
“I don’t know.””
Matthew looked down.
The honesty hurt.
But it was better than another lie.
Richard walked closer.
“Matthew…”
My son looked up.
“I’m sorry.””
Two simple words.
But they carried years of damage.
Matthew didn’t respond.
He just held Lily’s hand.
And Richard finally understood.
Trust was not rebuilt with money.
Or apologies.
Or promises.
It was rebuilt with time.
We left the apartment twenty minutes later.
Not because I trusted Richard.
Because I trusted the danger.
And I knew staying was worse.
We drove to an old Sterling property outside the city.
A place Richard said almost nobody knew existed.
The house was smaller than the mansion.
Older.
Quiet.
A place without cameras everywhere.
Without employees.
Without a family name carved into every wall.
When we arrived, Richard turned off the engine.
For a moment, none of us moved.
Then Lily spoke.
“Daddy?””
Richard looked back.
“Yes?””
“Are you sad?””
The question surprised him.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at her.
“Because I made mistakes.””
Lily thought about it.
Then asked:
“Can people fix mistakes?””
Richard looked at me.
Then back at her.
“I hope so.””
That night, while the children slept, Richard and I sat across from each other in the kitchen.
No lawyers.
No contracts.
No witnesses.
Just two people who used to love each other.
“I found something else,” he said.
I looked up.
“What?””
He placed a file on the table.
Inside was a photograph.
An old photograph.
My grandfather.
Richard’s father.
And another man.
A man I didn’t recognize.
“Who is that?””
Richard looked at the image.
“That’s the person who started all of this.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
He turned the photo around.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
*The Sterling family owes everything to him.*
I looked at Richard.
“Why have I never seen this?””
“Because my father destroyed every copy.””
“Why?””
Richard’s face was serious.
“Because that man was the original heir.””
I stared.
“What?””
Richard nodded.
“The Sterling name was never supposed to belong only to my family.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“Who was he?””
Richard took a breath.
Then said:
“Your father.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Claire…”
“No.””
I stood.
“That’s impossible.””
Richard shook his head.
“Your family wasn’t just connected to Sterling Global.””
He looked at me.
“Your family was the reason Sterling Global existed.””
My mind raced.
All my life, I thought my family was ordinary.
I thought I was just Claire.
A woman who married a billionaire.
A woman who lost everything when her husband left.
But now I was discovering I had been standing beside an empire that was partly mine.
Then Richard said something that made everything worse.
“Chloe’s pregnancy wasn’t the first attempt.””
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
He opened another document.
A medical record.
Older.
From years ago.
My hands trembled as I read the name.
The patient.
The date.
The result.
I looked at Richard.
“Why do you have this?””
His voice became quiet.
“Because someone was trying to find the rightful heir before you ever knew you existed.””
I turned the page.
And my heart stopped.
Because the record wasn’t about me.
It was about my children.
Matthew and Lily.
The final note at the bottom read:
*Sterling bloodline confirmed. Protect the children at all costs.*
I looked up.
“Richard…”
He stared at the document.
“I think they never wanted Chloe’s child to inherit.””
“Then what did they want?””
His face turned pale.
“Your children.””
A cold silence filled the room.
The people who destroyed our marriage.
The people who created the fake heir.
The people who manipulated Richard.
They were never trying to replace his children.
They were trying to find a way to control them.
Suddenly, Richard’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Daniel?””
The voice on the other end was frantic.
“Richard, listen carefully.””
Richard stood.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“I found the original DNA file.””
Richard looked at me.
“Where?””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Inside Sterling archives.””
“And?””
Silence.
Then:
“The baby Chloe is carrying…”
Richard waited.
“The DNA doesn’t match you.””
I felt relief.
Until Daniel continued.
“But it also doesn’t match the man we thought was the father.””
Richard frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel answered:
“It means someone created a false identity.””
A pause.
Then his final words came:
“Richard, Chloe’s baby may not belong to anyone in the Sterling family.””
The call ended.
And in that moment, we both realized the same terrifying truth.
The fake heir was never meant to inherit the empire.
May you like
The fake heir was meant to distract everyone…
while someone else took control.
