Chapter 5: The Inheritance They Tried to Erase
The first thing I did after the phone call was check every lock in the apartment.
The front door.
The windows.
The balcony.
Even the small storage room where Lily kept her toys.
It was irrational.
I knew that.
But fear rarely cared about logic.
For fifteen years, I had lived inside Richard Sterling’s world.
A world of private security.
Encrypted systems.
People whose job was to protect the family name.
I never imagined that one day I would be the person locking every door because I no longer knew who was protecting us.
Or who was hunting us.
I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the DNA report in my hands.
The paper looked ordinary.
A few pages.
A few printed words.
But those words had the power to destroy everything.
The Sterling inheritance dispute.
A secret my husband had never told me.
A secret someone had worked very hard to bury.
My phone buzzed again.
I expected the unknown caller.
Instead, it was a message from Daniel.
*Meet me tomorrow. Alone. No phones. No devices.*
I stared at the screen.
Daniel Cross was the one person in Richard’s company I believed had always been honest.
But honesty was complicated now.
Everyone seemed to have a hidden side.
Everyone had an excuse.
I typed back.
*Why should I trust you?*
The response came almost immediately.
*Because Richard is not the only person who was betrayed.*
I read that sentence several times.
Then I deleted the conversation.
Not because I didn’t believe him.
Because I did.
And that scared me.
The next morning, I left Matthew and Lily with a trusted neighbor and drove to an old coffee shop outside the city.
No cameras.
No business meetings.
No Sterling employees.
Just a quiet place where two people could talk without being watched.
Daniel was already there.
He looked different.
Not like Richard’s powerful attorney.
Not like the man who stood beside billionaires during negotiations.
He looked exhausted.
Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.
When I sat down, he immediately spoke.
“Claire, I know you have every reason to hate me.””
I didn’t touch the coffee in front of me.
“You knew.””
His eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
“You knew Chloe was lying.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Richard was destroying our family.””
His silence answered for him.
I looked away.
“Then why are you here?””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Because I made the mistake of believing I could control the situation.””
I laughed quietly.
“People like Richard always say that.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m not defending him.””
“Good.””
“I’m saying I was wrong.””
That surprised me.
Because powerful people rarely admitted mistakes.
Especially people who worked for Richard Sterling.
Daniel opened a small envelope and placed it on the table.
Inside were copies of old documents.
Older than anything I had seen before.
“What is this?””
“The original Sterling inheritance agreement.””
I frowned.
“Richard’s father?””
Daniel nodded.
“Twenty-five years ago, before Sterling Global became what it is today, there was a dispute over ownership.””
I looked through the papers.
Names.
Signatures.
Legal statements.
Then I saw something that made me stop.
My name.
Not Claire Sterling.
My maiden name.
“Why is my name here?””
Daniel looked at me carefully.
“Because you were never just Richard’s wife.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He lowered his voice.
“Your grandfather was one of the original investors who helped build the foundation of Sterling Global.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“It’s not.””
“My family had nothing to do with the company.””
“That’s what you were told.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“My entire life?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your family gave up their ownership rights after a legal agreement. But the agreement included a condition.””
I looked at the paper.
“What condition?””
Daniel pointed.
“Future descendants of your family line could reclaim their shares if the company was transferred through deception.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
He continued.
“The clause was created because your grandfather believed the Sterling family could one day abuse its power.””
I looked at the documents again.
Suddenly, everything felt connected.
The inheritance.
The baby.
The forty percent trust.
Chloe’s obsession with becoming part of the Sterling family.
“She knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“Someone told her.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then answered:
“Jonathan.””
I looked down.
Richard’s brother.
The man who had smiled at my children.
The man who had watched them grow.
“He knew about my family?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because Jonathan has spent years studying the company’s history.””
I clenched my hands.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because he believed Richard stole the life that belonged to him.””
The pieces started falling into place.
Jonathan’s resentment.
Chloe’s pregnancy.
The inheritance.
The sudden rush to create an heir.
It wasn’t about love.
It was about control.
“They weren’t trying to give Chloe’s child an inheritance,” I whispered.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“They were trying to create a legal claim.””
“Yes.””
I looked out the window.
All those years, I thought Richard left because he fell in love with someone else.
But maybe the affair was only part of something bigger.
Maybe I was never just the abandoned wife.
Maybe I was the obstacle.
The one person standing between them and the empire.
“Why didn’t you tell Richard?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I thought I could expose them quietly.””
“And?””
“I underestimated how far they would go.””
A long silence passed.
Then I asked:
“Does Richard know?””
Daniel looked at me.
“No.””
A strange emotion passed through me.
Relief.
And sadness.
Because a part of me still cared.
Even after everything.
Even after he signed away our family.
“He needs to know.””
Daniel nodded.
“He will.””
“Not from me.””
Daniel understood immediately.
“You don’t trust him.””
I looked at him.
“I trusted him for fifteen years.””
My voice became quieter.
“And he chose to believe a stranger over the mother of his children.””
Daniel looked down.
He had no argument.
That evening, Richard sat alone in his office.
The entire building had emptied.
But he remained.
Surrounded by documents proving the people closest to him had lied.
His assistant had brought him everything Daniel discovered.
Every transaction.
Every conversation.
Every connection.
And one name kept appearing.
Jonathan.
Richard stared at an old photograph on his desk.
He and Jonathan as teenagers.
Before money.
Before companies.
Before power.
They looked happy.
Like brothers.
He picked up his phone.
Called.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Finally, Jonathan called back.
“Richard.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Where are you?””
Jonathan laughed softly.
“Is that how you greet your brother?””
Richard stood.
“You helped Chloe.””
Silence.
A very brief silence.
But enough.
“You found out.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Why?””
Jonathan sighed.
“Because you took everything.””
“What are you talking about?””
“The company. The respect. Father’s approval.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You had everything.””
“No.””
Jonathan’s voice became bitter.
“You had everything.””
Richard gripped the phone.
“You used my wife.””
“No.””
“You used my children.””
Another pause.
Then Jonathan said:
“I used your weakness.””
Richard went still.
“What weakness?””
Jonathan answered:
“You always thought being loved mattered more than being powerful.””
Richard felt a chill.
Because that sounded exactly like something Claire would have said.
But from Jonathan’s mouth, it sounded like an accusation.
“You’re sick.””
Jonathan laughed.
“No, Richard. I’m patient.””
The call ended.
Richard immediately received a notification.
An email.
No sender.
Only one attachment.
He opened it.
The document contained a single message.
*You spent years protecting an empire that was never fully yours.*
Below it was a photograph.
A photograph of Claire.
Standing outside the coffee shop with Daniel.
Richard stared.
His first emotion was anger.
Then confusion.
Then something worse.
Fear.
Because whoever sent the image knew exactly where Claire was.
And they wanted him to know.
Across the city, I returned home to find Matthew and Lily waiting.
But before I could open the door, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
This time, I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
Not Chloe.
Someone older.
Someone calm.
“Claire.””
I froze.
“Who is this?””
The woman replied:
“The person who knows why your grandfather gave up the Sterling inheritance.””
My heart raced.
“How do you know my grandfather?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I was there the night they forced him to sign it.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who are you?””
The woman whispered:
“Richard Sterling’s mother.””
My blood turned cold.
“Eleanor?””
“Yes.””
“Why are you calling me?””
Her voice trembled for the first time.
“Because I made a mistake twenty-five years ago.””
I waited.
Then she said:
“And Chloe is not the only person trying to destroy your family.””
The line went silent.
Before hanging up, Eleanor added one final sentence.
“Claire, you need to protect your children.””
I looked through the window.
Matthew and Lily were laughing inside.
Safe.
For now.
Then I noticed something on the street outside.
A black car.
Parked across from my apartment.
The same car that had been following me since the airport.
May you like
And this time…
someone was sitting inside.
