Chapter 4: The Enemy Inside the Empire
Richard Sterling had spent his entire life believing betrayal came from outside.
From competitors.
From enemies.
From people who wanted what belonged to him.
He never imagined the greatest threat would come from someone who sat beside him at board meetings, shook his hand, and called him family.
The phone remained pressed against his ear.
“Who is it?”” Richard demanded.
On the other end, Chloe said nothing.
“Chloe.””
Her breathing became heavier.
“You need to understand something, Richard. This isn’t what I wanted.””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
He looked at the evidence scattered across his desk.
The photos.
The transfers.
The lies.
“You let me destroy my family.””
Silence.
Then Chloe whispered:
“I warned you not to dig deeper.””
Richard’s eyes hardened.
“No. You warned me because you’re afraid.””
“Richard—”
“Tell me the name.””
Another pause.
And then the call ended.
Richard stared at the screen.
She hung up.
For years, people feared Richard Sterling because he never lost control.
But that night, alone in his office, surrounded by proof that his entire life had been manipulated, he felt something unfamiliar.
He felt powerless.
The next morning, Richard arrived at Sterling Global Holdings before sunrise.
The building was usually quiet at that hour.
No assistants rushing through hallways.
No executives arguing over schedules.
No reporters waiting outside.
Just silence.
He preferred it that way.
Silence allowed him to think.
But when the elevator doors opened on the executive floor, someone was already waiting.
Daniel Cross.
The company’s chief legal officer.
Richard’s closest advisor.
The man who had been with him since the company had only twelve employees.
Daniel looked surprised.
“Richard?””
Richard walked past him.
“Come into my office.””
Daniel followed.
The door closed.
Richard placed a folder on the desk.
“Do you know what this is?””
Daniel looked down.
The color in his face changed slightly.
It was small.
Almost invisible.
But Richard noticed.
He noticed everything.
“Where did you get this?””
Richard leaned against the desk.
“So you recognize it.””
Daniel quickly recovered.
“I recognize the company documents.””
“Not what I asked.””
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
Richard’s voice became colder.
“How long?””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“How long have you known?””
“Known what?””
Richard opened the folder.
Inside was the financial record showing payments connected to Chloe.
“Don’t lie to me.””
Daniel stared at the papers.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he slowly sat down.
“Richard…”
The way he said his name was different.
Not like an employee.
Like someone preparing to deliver bad news.
“I never wanted it to go this far.””
Richard felt something inside him break.
“You knew.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“I knew Chloe was hiding something.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I tried to investigate.””
Richard slammed his hand against the desk.
“You were my lawyer!””
“I was trying to protect the company.””
Richard stared at him.
“The company?””
His voice lowered.
“What about my family?””
Daniel had no answer.
Because there was no answer that could justify it.
Richard turned away.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Three months ago, Chloe approached me.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“She wanted legal advice.””
“About what?””
Daniel hesitated.
“About inheritance.””
The word felt like a punch.
“She was already planning this?””
“Yes.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Three months.
Before he filed for divorce.
Before he stopped coming home.
Before he convinced himself that Claire was the problem.
“She knew exactly what she wanted.””
Daniel nodded.
“She studied the Sterling family history. She knew your biggest weakness.””
Richard looked at him.
“My weakness?””
“Your legacy.””
The room became quiet.
Daniel continued.
“She knew you spent your entire life trying to prove you were more than just a rich man’s son.””
Richard’s expression changed.
Because it was true.
His father had built the first Sterling company.
But Richard had always felt like he was living under someone else’s shadow.
He wanted something that would carry his name forever.
Daniel continued.
“She knew if she gave you the possibility of creating an heir, you would do anything to protect it.””
Richard looked at the city outside his window.
A city full of buildings carrying names of people who had sacrificed everything.
He had always believed sacrifice was necessary for success.
But now he wondered if he had sacrificed the wrong things.
“Who is the father?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Richard turned.
“Daniel.””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I know someone helped her.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“Richard, if I tell you this, there is no going back.””
Richard stepped closer.
“There was no going back the moment my children watched me choose another family.””
Daniel swallowed.
Then he said:
“The person who connected Chloe to the medical records system…”
Richard waited.
“…was your brother.””
The silence afterward was deafening.
Richard stared.
“My brother?””
Daniel nodded.
“Jonathan.””
Richard took a step back.
Impossible.
Jonathan Sterling.
His younger brother.
The man who had hugged Matthew after his first baseball game.
The man who called Claire “the only person who kept Richard human.””
The man who sat at their family dinners.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him sadly.
“I wish I was wrong.””
Richard grabbed the folder.
“Where is he?””
“I don’t know.””
“Find him.””
“Richard—”
“Find him.””
Daniel stood.
“Before you confront him, you should know something else.””
Richard stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“The money transfers weren’t only from Chloe.””
Richard slowly turned.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel opened another file.
“There were payments made to Chloe from a Sterling account.””
Richard stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“It’s not.””
“Whose account?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then pushed the file forward.
Richard looked down.
The account holder name was clearly printed.
His own mother.
Eleanor Sterling.
The woman who had spent the previous night asking what happened.
The woman who had always said family was everything.
Richard felt the room spinning.
His family.
His company.
His marriage.
Every piece of his life was connected.
And suddenly, Claire’s final words returned to him.
“Things acquired through lies often get repaid with an empire.””
Maybe she wasn’t threatening him.
Maybe she was warning him.
Meanwhile, I sat in a small apartment across the country, unpacking the few things we brought with us.
A new beginning was supposed to feel exciting.
But beginnings were difficult when they came from endings.
Matthew was putting his books on a shelf.
Lily was decorating her room with drawings.
I watched them quietly.
They deserved better.
Not a billionaire’s mansion.
Not expensive vacations.
Just stability.
Just love.
My phone vibrated.
I looked at the screen.
A message from Daniel.
I stared at the name for a long moment before opening it.
*Claire, Richard knows the truth now.*
My fingers froze.
Another message arrived.
*But you need to know something. The people behind this are not finished.*
I frowned.
A third message appeared.
*They know where you went.*
My heart dropped.
I immediately looked toward the window.
The street outside was quiet.
Too quiet.
I locked the door.
“Mom?””
I turned.
Matthew stood in the hallway.
“What happened?””
I forced a smile.
“Nothing, sweetheart.””
But he knew.
Children always know when adults are afraid.
That night, after they fell asleep, I opened the blue folder again.
There was one document I had never shown Richard.
The reason I left.
The reason I took my children and disappeared.
A final piece of evidence I had kept hidden because I wasn’t sure who I could trust.
I unfolded it slowly.
A DNA report.
Not Chloe’s.
Not the baby’s.
Mine.
And at the bottom was a note written by the doctor who conducted the test.
*Patient Claire Sterling has biological evidence connecting her family history to the original Sterling inheritance dispute.*
I stared at the words.
Because there was something Richard never knew.
Something even I had only discovered weeks earlier.
The Sterling empire wasn’t just Richard’s.
And someone had spent years making sure I never found out.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
I answered cautiously.
No one spoke at first.
Then a man’s voice whispered:
“Claire, you need to leave immediately.””
I froze.
“Who is this?””
The voice lowered.
“Someone who helped build Richard’s empire.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Why should I trust you?””
A pause.
Then the man said the one thing that made my blood run cold.
“Because I know why your children were never supposed to inherit anything.””
The call ended.
May you like
And in the darkness of my new home, I realized the divorce was never the beginning of my escape.
It was the beginning of a war.
