Chapter 20 - THE PROMISE I KEPT

Lily turned seven that spring.
We held her birthday party in the gardens. The sun shone. The flowers bloomed. Elena laughed as Lily chased butterflies. Sarah brought a cake shaped like a bear. And Lily—my beautiful, brave, wonderful daughter—sat in the center of it all, smiling, happy, unaware of the darkness that had surrounded her.
After the guests had gone, Lily came to me carrying something in her arms. The teddy bear. The one Evelyn had torn apart. The one Grace had hidden. The one we had sewn back together, stitch by careful stitch.
“Daddy,” she said, holding it out. “Look. Teddy is whole again.”
I knelt beside her. I touched the repaired seams. The new stuffing. The button eyes that still did not match.
“He is whole,” I said softly. “Just like us.”
Lily looked up at me. “Grandma Evelyn is with Mommy now, isn’t she?”
I paused. Then I nodded. “Yes, my love. I believe she is.”
“And they are watching over us?”
“Yes.”
Lily hugged the bear. “Then we are safe.”
I picked her up and held her close. I looked out across the gardens—at the house James built, the place Grace loved, the home we had rebuilt from the ruins.
“We are safe,” I promised her. “And we will always be safe. No matter what.”
That night, I went up to the attic. I pulled out the USB drive. The one Grace had hidden inside the bear. I inserted it into the player one last time.
Grace appeared on the screen. Pale. Thin. But smiling.
*“But you are stronger than anything they try to take from you. I love you, my sweet girl. Always.”*
I reached out and touched the screen.
“I love you too,” I whispered. “And I kept my promise. I protected her. I became the man you believed I could be. We are free now, Grace. All of us.”
I ejected the drive and placed it inside the repaired bear, where it belonged. Where it would stay, safe and hidden, until Lily was old enough to know the truth.

I turned off the light and walked out of the room. Down the hall, I heard Lily laughing with Elena. Somewhere outside, an owl called. And for the first time in years… I slept in peace.
