Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW RETURNS

Days turned into weeks. Arthur remained missing. Interpol tracked him to three different countries, but each time he slipped away—always one step ahead, always vanishing just before authorities closed in. He had money, false identities, loyal allies. He was a ghost haunting the edges of our lives.

Elena stayed. She became part of our household. She helped me sort through the estate files, identified Arthur’s contacts, and traced his hidden assets. She was sharp, brave, and fiercely protective of Lily. She told me once that being here—fighting alongside me—was the first time in her life she had ever felt like she truly belonged somewhere.

Then the letters began.

They arrived on plain white paper, no return address, written in a handwriting I knew all too well.

*You think you can replace me? You think a few pieces of paper change who you are? You carry my blood. You cannot escape it. And I will not let you take what is mine.*

The next one came a week later.

*The girl belongs to the Holloway line. And so does the money. You have been misled. Grace was a stranger. She stole everything from us. I am taking it back. When the time comes, you will stand beside me. Or you will fall with the rest of them.*

And then one arrived that made my blood run cold.

*I see the girl. She has my eyes. She is beautiful. Bring her to me, Adrian. Or I will come and take her. And then you will understand exactly what I am capable of.*

“He’s watching us,” I said, slamming the letter down on the desk. “He’s close.”

Sarah turned pale. “The police have guards patrolling the perimeter. The house is under surveillance. He cannot get in.”

“He already knows what Lily looks like,” Elena said quietly. “He knows what she is wearing. He knows what she does every day. Someone is feeding him information.”

We looked at each other in silence. Someone inside the house. Someone we trusted.
