Chapter 16 - THE CONFESSION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

In the confusion, Arthur escaped. But he had made one fatal mistake.

He had been recorded.

Every word. Every threat. Every confession. The officers had captured it all on audio and video. Including the moment he shot Evelyn. Including the moment he admitted to poisoning Grace.

He had sealed his own fate.

The next morning, the recording was released to every law enforcement agency in the world. The charges multiplied—murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, treason against his own family. He was no longer just a missing person. He was a hunted man.

And three days later, Arthur called me.

I was sitting in Evelyn’s study, staring at the photograph of her holding me as an infant, when my phone rang. The number was blocked. But I knew who it was.

“Adrian,” he said. His voice sounded different—broken. Defeated.

“Turn yourself in,” I said.

“I cannot,” he replied. “They will kill me. And I have something you need to know.”

“I know everything,” I said. “The ledger. The recording. Elena’s testimony. You killed Grace. You shot Evelyn. You planned everything from the day I was born.”

Arthur was silent for a long time. Then he spoke, his voice barely audible.

“I did not kill Grace.”

The words hung in the air.

“Liar,” I said.

“I wrote those words to frighten her,” Arthur said. “To make her think I was capable of it. To make her run. To make her hand control to me. But I did not poison her. I swear it. I loved her. In my own way… I loved her too.”

“Then who did?” I demanded.

Arthur took a jagged breath.

“Evelyn,” he said. “Evelyn poisoned Grace. Because Grace threatened to expose you. To tell the world who you were. To ruin everything. Evelyn said… she would protect you. Even if it meant burning the world down.”

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

“Evelyn?” I whispered.

“She came to me that night,” Arthur said. “Told me what she had done. Said Grace would never wake up. And then… she threatened to frame me if I told anyone. She said: ‘Now we are bound. Forever.’”

My mind reeled. Evelyn had spent months protecting me. She had shot Arthur. She had confessed to everything else. She had died saving my life. And yet… she had killed Grace.

“Why?” I whispered. “Why would she do it?”

“Because Grace was going to ruin you,” Arthur said. “Grace was going to publish the truth about your birth. She believed… she believed it was better for you to know the truth openly… than to live under Evelyn’s thumb. But Evelyn… Evelyn could not bear the shame. She could not bear to see you stripped of the name. The fortune. The life she had built for you. So she poisoned her… to protect you.”

I stood there, trembling, the phone pressed to my ear. Everything I believed was shifting. The hero was the villain. The villain was the victim. And the woman who had died in my arms… had murdered the woman I loved.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“At the chapel,” Arthur said quietly. “Where your parents married. Where Grace and you married. I am waiting. Come, Adrian. And bring the truth with you.”
