Chapter 17 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

I arrived at the chapel an hour later. It stood silent and white on the hill, surrounded by winter trees. The doors stood open.

I walked inside. Arthur sat in the front pew, beneath the stained-glass window of the Virgin Mary. He held a small velvet box in his hands. He looked up when I entered.

“I knew you would come,” he said.

I stopped halfway down the aisle. I held the phone still recording in my pocket.

“Tell me the truth,” I said. “All of it. From the beginning.”

Arthur nodded slowly.

“Evelyn poisoned Grace,” he said. “A sedative mixed with something she got from the apothecary. Not enough to kill… but enough to make her appear to die of complications. She never intended to murder her. She only intended to keep her weak. Silent. Bedridden. But Grace was already so sick… it was too much.”

He paused, his voice cracking.

“When Evelyn realized what she had done… she came to me. She was terrified. She said: ‘I did it for him. I did it to protect our son.’ And I… I took the blame. I let her think I believed it was my fault. Because I loved her. Even then. Even after everything.”

He opened the velvet box. Inside lay a ring—Grace’s engagement ring.

“Evelyn confessed everything to me the night before she died,” Arthur said. “She wrote it all down. Sealed it. And gave it to me. To give to you… only when she was gone.”

He held out an envelope. Evelyn’s handwriting. Sealed.

I took it. My hands shook as I broke the wax.

*Adrian,*

*If you are reading this… I am dead. And Arthur has told you the truth.*

*I did not mean to kill her. I only meant to silence her. She was going to ruin you. She was going to tell the world you were not a Holloway. I could not let her do that. I loved you too much to see you shamed.*

*But I failed. I killed her instead of saving her. And every day since… I have carried her death like a stone in my chest. I tried to destroy the bear. I tried to steal the will. I tried to fight Arthur. I tried… oh, God, I tried to make it right.*

*I shot Arthur to protect you. I turned myself in to protect Lily. And I died… trying to make amends. Forgive me, Adrian. For everything. I loved you. More than life itself.*

I folded the letter slowly. My heart felt shattered into a thousand pieces. Grace had died because Evelyn loved me too much to let the truth be known. And Evelyn had died… trying to make it right.

“Where do we go from here?” Arthur asked quietly.

I looked up at him. The man who had planned my life. Who had used me. Who had threatened Lily. But who had also protected the truth. Who had carried Evelyn’s secret. Who had loved her until the very end.

“Turn yourself in,” I said. “Testify. Confess everything. And let the truth finally be known.”

Arthur looked at me. Then slowly, he nodded.

“I will,” he said. “For Grace. For Evelyn. For all of us.”
