Chapter 7: The Confession Hidden for Years
Maria couldn’t open the envelope.
Not because she didn’t want to.
Because she was afraid of what it would reveal.
The entire Hawthorne family stood around her in the hospital lobby.
Daniel looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.
Claire kept staring at Rebecca as if she was seeing a ghost.
Thomas stood completely still, his expression impossible to read.
And Samuel…
The man everyone believed was Dr. Samuel Hawthorne…
watched Maria with calm eyes.
Almost like he already knew what was inside.
Maria looked at Rebecca.
“Who wrote this?””
Rebecca’s eyes moved toward Samuel.
“He did.””
Samuel didn’t deny it.
Daniel’s voice shook with anger.
“You’re saying he wrote a confession?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Before everything happened.””
Maria looked down at the envelope again.
The paper felt strangely heavy in her hand.
“What everything?””
Rebecca took a slow breath.
“The lies. The experiments. The reason Ethan was targeted.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Please.””
Her voice cracked.
“I need to understand.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“Then you need to stop protecting people who never protected you.””
The words hurt.
Maria saw Claire look away.
Because somewhere deep inside, she knew Rebecca was right.
Maria opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
The handwriting was neat.
Precise.
Cold.
She began reading.
*My name is Samuel Hawthorne.*
Maria stopped.
She looked up.
Samuel was watching her.
Rebecca noticed.
“Keep going.””
Maria continued.
*For years, I believed intelligence gave me the right to control things I did not understand. I believed progress mattered more than people.*
A chill moved through her.
The words sounded exactly like something a brilliant but dangerous person would write.
*When my granddaughter was born, I discovered a rare genetic condition that affected her immune system. Instead of accepting it, I searched for a way to manipulate it.*
Maria looked at Ethan’s hospital room through the glass doors.
Her heart tightened.
*I created a compound designed to trigger and measure immune responses. I convinced myself it was research. I convinced myself it was necessary.*
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel looked furious.
But he didn’t look surprised.
Maria noticed.
“You knew.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
“You knew about this.””
Daniel’s silence answered.
Maria’s voice became quiet.
“How long?””
Daniel looked away.
“Years.””
The confession continued.
*I used my own family as subjects. I told myself I was protecting them. I was not.*
Maria felt sick.
A person who claimed to love his family had turned them into experiments.
*Rebecca discovered what I had done. She tried to expose me. I stopped her.*
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at Samuel.
“You stopped her?””
Samuel’s expression changed slightly.
Rebecca spoke before he could.
“He tried to erase my life.””
Maria looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca’s eyes became distant.
“After I found the files, I went to the police.””
She paused.
“But before I could reach them, I was attacked.””
Claire whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Rebecca nodded.
“I survived. But everyone believed I was gone.””
Maria looked at Samuel.
“You let your own daughter disappear?””
Samuel’s face remained calm.
“She made dangerous choices.””
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“You made dangerous choices.””
The lobby fell silent.
Maria continued reading.
*After Rebecca disappeared, I knew the truth would eventually return. So I created another identity.*
Her eyes moved lower.
Then stopped.
She looked up.
“Another identity?””
Rebecca nodded.
Maria looked at Samuel.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca answered.
“The man you see is not Samuel Hawthorne.””
Daniel stared.
“Then who is he?””
Samuel finally spoke.
His voice was quiet.
“My name is Adrian Vale.””
Everyone turned.
Maria felt the world shift.
Samuel Hawthorne had been dead.
The person standing in front of them had been living under his name.
“How?””
Thomas answered.
“Plastic surgery. Fake records. Years of preparation.””
Maria looked at him.
“You knew this too?””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
The anger inside Maria returned.
“How many secrets have you been carrying?””
Thomas didn’t defend himself.
“Too many.””
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“Why?””
Adrian smiled faintly.
“Because your father left behind unfinished work.””
Maria looked at the confession.
The handwriting.
The research.
The lies.
“Ethan.””
Everyone turned.
Maria pointed toward the hospital room.
“This was about Ethan.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why him?””
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
“Because Ethan inherited the same genetic marker.””
Claire stepped back.
“What?””
Rebecca continued.
“The condition didn’t come from nowhere. It came through the Hawthorne bloodline.””
Maria looked confused.
“But if it was genetic…”
Rebecca nodded.
“Then Ethan was valuable.””
The word made Maria uncomfortable.
“Valuable?””
Rebecca’s face hardened.
“To people like them.””
She looked at Adrian.
“They didn’t see a child.””
She looked at Daniel.
“They saw a chance to prove their theories.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Then explain why you continued the research.””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Claire looked at her husband.
“You continued?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with guilt.
“I was trying to fix it.””
Claire stared.
“You knew?””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I knew Ethan was at risk.””
Her voice broke.
“You knew and you let me think Maria was hurting him?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know who to trust.””
Maria almost laughed.
The sound came out broken.
“So you chose to sacrifice me?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I was scared.””
Maria shook her head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She wiped her eyes.
“Everyone was scared.””
She looked around the room.
“But Ethan was the one suffering.””
No one answered.
Because she was right.
A doctor suddenly appeared at the end of the hallway.
“Maria?””
She turned.
“Yes?””
The doctor walked toward her.
“I need to speak with you.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why her?””
The doctor looked at him.
“Because Ethan asked for her.””
Everyone froze.
Maria felt her chest tighten.
“He’s awake?””
The doctor nodded.
“He woke up a few minutes ago.””
Maria immediately walked forward.
Then stopped.
Claire looked at her.
For the first time all day, she didn’t look angry.
She looked uncertain.
“Maria…”
Maria turned.
Claire swallowed.
“I’m sorry.””
The words were quiet.
Not enough to erase what happened.
But enough to show something had changed.
Maria looked at her for a moment.
Then she said:
“Be sorry to Ethan.””
Claire looked down.
“I am.””
Maria entered the hospital room.
Ethan was awake.
His eyes were tired.
But when he saw her, his face changed.
“Mia.””
Maria immediately went to him.
She took his hand carefully.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
His fingers wrapped around hers.
“You came back.””
Those three words almost broke her.
“I told you I would.””
Ethan looked around.
“Mommy was mad.””
Maria glanced toward the door.
“She was scared.””
Ethan frowned.
“Are you leaving?””
Maria’s eyes filled.
She looked at this child who had trusted her when nobody else did.
“I don’t know.””
Ethan squeezed her finger.
“Don’t go.””
Maria smiled sadly.
“I’m here right now.””
Behind her, someone entered the room.
She assumed it was Claire.
But it wasn’t.
It was Adrian.
Maria immediately stood.
“What do you want?””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
Then at her.
“I need to tell you something before Daniel does.””
Maria’s expression hardened.
“What?””
Adrian stepped closer.
“The reason Ethan survived today…”
He paused.
“…is because the person who caused the reaction made one mistake.””
Maria stared.
“What mistake?””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“They didn’t realize Ethan wasn’t the only person with the Hawthorne genetic marker.””
Maria felt cold.
“What are you saying?””
Adrian looked directly at her.
“The reason you were able to identify Ethan’s symptoms so quickly…”
He took a breath.
“…is because you have the same condition.””
Maria went completely still.
“No.””
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“Maria, your childhood medical records were hidden.””
Her heart started racing.
“My mother…”
“Was not your biological mother.””
The room went silent.
Maria couldn’t move.
The child she had protected.
The family she had worked for.
The secrets buried in the Hawthorne mansion.
Suddenly connected to her.
Adrian reached into his coat.
He pulled out a final document.
A birth record.
He placed it on the table.
Maria looked down.
And saw the name written beside *Mother*.
Her hands began shaking.
Because it was a name she knew.
A name she had heard all her life.
May you like
And a name that changed everything.
*Rebecca Hawthorne.*
