Chapter 2: The Figure in the Hall

Maria’s thumb hovered over the screen.

For one second, she was afraid to press play.

Not because she doubted herself.

Because she was afraid the video might show something she couldn’t explain.

The nursery was silent around her. Ethan’s favorite blue dinosaur sat on the rug. A half-folded blanket rested on the rocking chair. The little night-light shaped like a moon glowed faintly even though it was still daylight.

Maria swallowed.

Then she pressed the screen.

The video began.

The angle was wide, fixed high in the corner of the nursery.

Ethan was sitting on the floor with his wooden blocks.

Maria appeared near the crib, folding clothes.

Nothing unusual.

She leaned closer.

“Come on,” she whispered.

For several seconds, the footage showed exactly what she remembered.

Then the timestamp changed.

10:13:41.

Ethan stopped playing.

Maria looked up.

The little boy coughed once.

Then again.

He put one hand against his chest.

Maria immediately dropped the clothes.

On the recording, Maria hurried across the nursery.

“Ethan?””

She knelt beside him.

The sound from the camera was faint, but clear enough to hear her voice.

“Baby, look at me.””

Ethan tried to breathe.

Maria lifted him.

Then she froze.

Her face changed.

Even without hearing the audio clearly, Maria knew exactly what she had seen that morning.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not guilt.

Not panic over being caught.

Fear for a child.

Maria watched herself reach for the phone.

She watched herself call Claire.

No answer.

She called Daniel.

No answer.

Then something moved outside the nursery.

Maria stopped the video.

Her heart began pounding.

She rewound.

The hallway beyond the nursery door had been empty.

Then, at 10:14:03, a shadow crossed the opening.

Maria pressed play again.

A man stepped into view.

He looked around before entering.

Maria’s blood went cold.

She knew him.

“Mr. Reed,” she whispered.

Thomas Reed.

The Hawthornes’ private security consultant.

He had worked for Daniel for years.

Maria had never liked being alone with him.

He was polite in front of the family, always careful with his words. But when nobody else was around, his friendliness disappeared.

He had once told Maria that “good help stays invisible.””

At the time, she had laughed awkwardly.

Now she watched him step into the nursery.

Thomas stood beside Ethan’s toy shelf and looked toward the crib.

Then he bent down.

Maria leaned so close to the screen that her reflection appeared over the image.

“What are you doing?””

Thomas reached behind the shelf.

Maria’s eyes widened.

There was something in his hand.

A small plastic bottle.

He glanced toward the hallway.

Then he placed the bottle inside Ethan’s toy basket.

He straightened.

The footage continued.

Thomas turned toward the door.

And just before leaving, he looked directly at the camera.

Maria stopped breathing.

He knew it was there.

He knew.

A cold sensation crawled up her back.

She replayed the moment.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

There was no mistake.

Thomas had looked directly into the lens.

Maria suddenly remembered something from two months earlier.

It had been late in the afternoon. Ethan was sleeping upstairs, and Thomas had been standing in the kitchen with Daniel.

Maria had walked in to return some medicine to the cabinet.

She remembered Thomas saying, “The system needs an update.””

Daniel had replied, “Do whatever is necessary.””

At the time, she hadn’t thought anything of it.

Now her hand tightened around the phone.

She continued watching.

Thomas left.

Three minutes later, Ethan began coughing.

Maria rushed to him.

She grabbed him and ran for help.

The video ended.

Maria stared at the black screen.

“No,” she whispered.

She immediately switched to the security system’s file information.

There were dozens of recordings.

Most were ordinary.

Nursery.

Kitchen.

Hallway.

Driveway.

But then Maria saw something that made her blood run colder.

The camera footage from the previous six days was missing.

Only fragments remained.

She tapped the first date.

“File unavailable.””

The second.

“File unavailable.””

The third.

Same message.

Maria’s breathing quickened.

Someone had deleted them.

Not accidentally.

She remembered what Linda had told her once while cleaning the upstairs hall.

“Mr. Reed handles all the cameras now.””

Maria had never questioned it.

Until now.

She grabbed her purse.

She had to get the footage to the police.

Or to Ethan’s doctor.

Someone had to see it.

She reached the bottom of the stairs just as the front door opened.

Maria stopped.

Thomas Reed walked inside.

He closed the door behind him.

Neither of them spoke.

His eyes moved from her face to the phone in her hand.

Then back to her face.

“You’re still here,” he said.

Maria’s fingers tightened around the device.

“I was collecting my things.””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“Understandable.””

Maria studied him.

“You went into the nursery this morning.””

His expression didn’t change.

“What?””

“I saw the camera footage.””

A pause.

Then Thomas smiled.

It was small.

Almost gentle.

“You’ve had a difficult day, Maria.””

“I know what I saw.””

“You think you do.””

Maria took one step backward.

“What did you put in Ethan’s basket?””

Thomas’s jaw tightened for the first time.

“That’s a serious accusation.””

“So answer me.””

“You should be careful.””

Maria’s heart hammered.

“Are you threatening me?””

Thomas looked toward the staircase.

“I’m advising you.””

Maria held up the phone.

“I have the footage.””

Thomas’s face went completely still.

There.

For the first time, Maria saw fear.

Not much.

Just enough.

Then he gave a quiet laugh.

“You don’t understand how these systems work.””

“I understand what I saw.””

“No,” Thomas said.

“You understand what you want to see.””

Maria shook her head.

“You were in that nursery before Ethan got sick.””

“I entered the room.””

“You put something in his basket.””

“I checked the room.””

“You looked at the camera.””

Thomas stepped closer.

Maria stepped back.

“I looked at a camera,” he said calmly.

“That proves nothing.””

“Why are the recordings from the last six days missing?””

He stopped.

Maria saw it again.

That tiny flicker in his eyes.

“You’ve been going through private security files?”” he asked.

“I’m trying to save a child.””

Thomas stared at her.

Then he said something that made Maria’s stomach drop.

“Your biggest mistake was assuming everyone wants the truth.””

Maria didn’t answer.

Thomas walked past her toward the kitchen.

Before he disappeared around the corner, he added, “Get your things and leave.””

Maria stood there, frozen.

His footsteps faded.

She looked down at the phone.

Her hands were shaking so badly she nearly dropped it.

She quickly sent the footage to herself.

Then she sent it to Linda.

The message showed delivered.

Maria exhaled.

At least someone else would have a copy.

She picked up her suitcase and headed toward the front door.

But halfway there, her phone buzzed.

A text from Linda.

Maria opened it.

There was no message.

Only a photograph.

A photograph of the plastic bottle from the video.

Linda had apparently found it in the nursery basket.

Underneath the image were four words.

*“Maria, don’t leave yet.””*

Maria stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*“I found something else.””*

Before Maria could answer, the mansion lights suddenly went out.

Every room.

Every hallway.

Everything went black.

Maria froze.

Then she heard a sound behind her.

A floorboard creaked.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

She turned.

Thomas was standing at the end of the hallway.

She couldn’t see his face clearly in the darkness.

But she could hear his voice.

“Give me the phone, Maria.””

She clutched it to her chest.

“No.””

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Maria’s screen lit up again.

A new video file had appeared.

Timestamp: 9:52 AM.

She stared at the title.

*NURSERY — CAMERA 2 — DELETED FILE RECOVERED*

And beneath it was a thumbnail.

The thumbnail showed Ethan in his crib.

Standing beside him was a person who was supposed to have been nowhere near the nursery that morning.

Maria looked up at Thomas.

May you like

He took one step forward.

And then the mansion doors slammed shut behind her.
