Thinking

Chapter 3: The Secret Inside the Recording

Maria didn’t move.

The darkness around her felt heavier than it should have.

The mansion that had once felt familiar now felt like a trap.

Every hallway she had walked through carrying Ethan after nightmares, every room where she had laughed with him, every corner where she had felt safe…

Now felt like it belonged to someone else.

Thomas stood several feet away.

Silent.

Waiting.

Maria’s phone glowed in her hand, lighting up her terrified expression.

The recovered file was still open.

*NURSERY — CAMERA 2 — DELETED FILE RECOVERED*

She looked at the thumbnail again.

Ethan was standing in his crib.

And beside him…

was Claire Hawthorne.

Maria’s breath caught.

That didn’t make sense.

Claire had told everyone she had been at a charity meeting that morning.

Daniel had said she was nowhere near the nursery.

The entire family had looked at Maria like she was the only person who could have caused what happened.

But the image on the screen told a different story.

Someone had been lying.

“Give me the phone,” Thomas repeated.

Maria slowly raised her eyes.

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

“I think I do.””

Thomas stepped closer.

Maria backed toward the front door.

“You helped someone hurt Ethan.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

He didn’t answer.

That silence told her more than words could.

Maria pressed play.

The video loaded.

Thomas suddenly moved.

“No.””

It was the first time his calm mask broke.

Maria noticed.

And that scared her even more.

She turned the volume up.

The recording began.

The camera angle was different from the first one.

It showed the corner of the nursery she had never paid attention to before.

The image quality was darker.

But clear enough.

The timestamp read:

9:52 AM.

Ethan was standing in his crib, playing with a stuffed rabbit.

The nursery door opened.

Claire walked inside.

Maria stared.

Claire entered slowly.

Not like a mother checking on her child.

Like someone who was nervous.

She looked over her shoulder.

Then she closed the door.

Maria felt a painful knot form in her chest.

“What is this?””

Thomas said nothing.

On the screen, Claire approached Ethan.

She picked him up.

For a moment, Maria thought maybe she had misunderstood.

Maybe Claire was simply worried.

Maybe there was another explanation.

Then Claire looked toward the camera.

Her face changed.

She reached up.

And covered the lens.

The video went black.

Maria’s mouth opened slightly.

“No…”

The screen jumped ahead.

The camera came back online.

The timestamp showed 10:06 AM.

Claire was gone.

Ethan was back in his crib.

And the nursery door opened again.

This time, Thomas entered.

Maria looked at him.

“You were working with her.””

Thomas’s eyes narrowed.

“Keep watching.””

Maria hated that he said it so calmly.

The video continued.

Thomas walked toward Ethan.

He didn’t pick him up.

He didn’t touch him.

Instead, he checked the crib.

Then he looked directly at the covered camera.

A minute later, he left.

The recording ended.

Maria lowered the phone.

Her mind was racing.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Exactly.””

“You’re trying to make me believe Claire did something.””

“I’m showing you that you don’t know the whole story.””

Maria shook her head.

“You were in the nursery too.””

“Yes.””

“And you deleted the footage.””

“Yes.””

His honesty surprised her.

“Why?””

Thomas looked away.

“Because I was protecting someone.””

Maria felt anger rise inside her.

“Protecting who?””

Before he could answer, another sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Both of them looked toward the staircase.

Thomas’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely worried.

“Who else is here?””

Maria whispered.

Thomas didn’t respond.

Then they heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Coming down the stairs.

Maria grabbed the nearest object on the table.

A heavy candle holder.

Thomas noticed.

“You think I’m the threat?””

“I don’t know what to think anymore.””

The footsteps stopped.

A figure appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Maria?””

Maria froze.

“Linda?””

The housekeeper stepped into view.

She looked exhausted and frightened.

“I told you not to leave.””

Maria lowered the candle holder.

“Linda, what’s happening?””

Linda looked at Thomas.

Her face filled with anger.

“You should be asking him.””

Thomas sighed.

“Linda.””

“No.””

Linda walked down the stairs.

“You let them blame her.””

Thomas’s expression tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

Maria looked between them.

“What is going on?””

Linda stopped in front of her.

Then she reached into her apron pocket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this hidden behind the nursery cabinet.””

Maria took it.

“What is it?””

Linda looked at Thomas.

“Something he didn’t want anyone to find.””

Maria opened the envelope.

Inside was a printed document.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she felt the room tilt.

It was a medical report.

Ethan Hawthorne.

Patient history.

The date was from three months earlier.

Maria read the first line.

*Possible allergic reaction.*

She looked up.

“Ethan had allergies?””

Linda nodded.

“Severe ones.””

Maria frowned.

“But Claire told me he only had a sensitive stomach.””

“That’s what everyone was told.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Linda turned toward him.

“No. She deserves to know.””

Maria looked at Thomas.

“Know what?””

Silence.

Then Linda said the words that changed everything.

“Ethan’s condition was getting worse because someone kept exposing him to something he was allergic to.””

Maria felt a chill.

“What?””

Linda continued.

“The doctors couldn’t understand why his reactions kept happening. They told Daniel and Claire to remove possible triggers from the house.””

Maria looked at the medical report again.

“Then why didn’t they?””

Linda’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because they thought they knew who was responsible.””

Maria’s stomach dropped.

“Me?””

Linda nodded slowly.

“They suspected the nanny.””

The word hung in the air.

Maria remembered every strange look.

Every question.

Every time Claire watched her prepare Ethan’s food.

She had thought Claire was just being protective.

But she had been building suspicion.

“Why?”” Maria whispered.

Linda looked down.

“Because someone convinced them.””

Maria looked at Thomas.

He didn’t deny it.

“You told them.””

Thomas’s face remained unreadable.

“I gave them information.””

“You lied.””

“I gave them what I knew.””

“No,” Maria said.

“You gave them what you wanted them to believe.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You have no idea how complicated this is.””

Maria laughed bitterly.

“Complicated?””

Her voice cracked.

“I lost my job today. I was accused of hurting a child I love. I was thrown out of a home where I spent two years caring for Ethan.””

She stepped closer.

“That isn’t complicated to me.””

Thomas looked away.

For a moment, he almost looked ashamed.

Almost.

Then his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”” Linda asked.

Thomas didn’t answer.

Maria noticed his hand tighten around the phone.

“Who is it?””

He ignored her.

Then the call ended.

A second later, his phone received a message.

Thomas read it.

And all the color disappeared from his face.

Maria watched carefully.

“What did they say?””

Thomas slowly looked up.

“It’s Ethan.””

Her heart stopped.

“What about him?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then he handed her the phone.

The message was from the hospital.

*Patient condition has changed. Immediate family requested.*

Maria looked up.

“Changed how?””

Nobody answered.

Then another notification appeared.

This time from the hospital security system.

A photo attachment.

Thomas opened it.

The image showed the hospital hallway outside Ethan’s room.

A person was standing near the door.

Someone who had no reason to be there.

Maria stared at the picture.

Because she recognized the person immediately.

And this time…

there was no camera angle that could explain it away.

May you like

It was Daniel Hawthorne.

Holding the same bottle that had been found in Ethan’s nursery.
