Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Nobody moved.
The hospital room felt frozen.
The beeping of Ethan’s monitor became the only sound.
Maria stared at Daniel.
She waited for him to laugh.
To say it was a misunderstanding.
To explain that she had heard him wrong.
But Daniel only looked toward the open doorway.
Like he had been expecting someone.
Like he had been afraid of this moment for years.
The door opened wider.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Tall.
His gray hair was neatly combed, his dark coat still wet from the rain outside.
His face showed signs of age, but his eyes were sharp.
Cold.
Familiar.
Maria had seen those eyes before.
In old photographs hanging throughout the mansion.
The Hawthorne family portrait.
The man standing proudly in the center.
Dr. Samuel Hawthorne.
The man everyone believed had died five years ago.
Claire covered her mouth.
“No…”
The old man looked at her.
“Hello, Claire.””
Her face drained of color.
Daniel immediately moved in front of Ethan’s bed.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Samuel smiled faintly.
“After everything I’ve done for this family, that’s how you greet me?””
Maria felt a chill.
Everything suddenly became larger than she understood.
This wasn’t just about a bottle.
This wasn’t just about a nanny being blamed.
There was a secret buried inside this family.
And Ethan had somehow become trapped in the middle of it.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Samuel.””
The old man looked at him.
“Thomas.””
A strange silence passed between them.
Maria noticed it immediately.
They knew each other.
Not casually.
Deeply.
“You knew,” Maria whispered.
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at Thomas.
“You knew he was alive.””
Thomas didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Maria felt something break inside her.
“Everyone knew except me.””
Thomas looked down.
“Maria…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“No more explanations after the damage is done.””
Samuel watched her carefully.
“And you must be the nanny.””
Maria looked at him.
“The person your family tried to blame.””
Samuel smiled.
“Interesting.””
Daniel’s voice turned angry.
“Leave.””
Samuel ignored him.
Instead, he walked closer to Ethan’s bed.
Maria immediately stepped in front of him.
“No.””
The room went quiet.
Samuel looked surprised.
“You would stop me?””
“Yes.””
“Even knowing who I am?””
Maria didn’t move.
“I know exactly who you are.””
Samuel tilted his head.
“Do you?””
Maria looked at Ethan.
“I know I’m the only person in this room who noticed he needed help.””
For the first time, Samuel’s expression changed.
A small flicker of respect appeared.
“Brave.””
“No.””
Maria’s voice hardened.
“Just tired of watching people with power hurt people who can’t defend themselves.””
Daniel looked away.
Because he knew she wasn’t only talking about Samuel.
She was talking about him too.
The nurse entered again with hospital security.
“Is everything okay?””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Yes. This man is not supposed to be here.””
Samuel calmly reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he only pulled out a small card.
The nurse looked at it.
Her expression changed.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked furious.
“Don’t.””
The nurse handed the card to security.
After reading it, the guard stepped back.
Maria noticed the confusion.
“What is it?””
Nobody answered.
Then Samuel said quietly:
“My medical authorization.””
Claire stared.
“You still have access?””
Samuel smiled.
“People forget how much power a name can hold.””
Daniel clenched his fists.
“You lost that power.””
“No.””
Samuel looked at him.
“You took it.””
The words landed heavily.
Maria looked between them.
“What happened five years ago?””
No one answered.
Samuel looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel remained silent.
“Tell her how you buried me.””
Claire looked at Daniel.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Samuel, enough.””
But Samuel continued.
“Five years ago, your husband discovered my research.””
Maria frowned.
“What research?””
Samuel looked at Ethan.
“My research on genetic allergies.””
Thomas immediately looked uncomfortable.
Maria noticed.
“You were studying Ethan?””
Samuel smiled.
“I was studying the condition he inherited.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Don’t talk about my son like he’s an experiment.””
Samuel looked at her.
“But you allowed it.””
Claire froze.
Maria looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Samuel walked slowly toward the window.
“When Ethan was born, doctors noticed unusual reactions. His body responded differently to common substances.””
Maria listened carefully.
“He wasn’t simply allergic,” Samuel said.
“There was a pattern.””
“A pattern?””
Samuel nodded.
“Someone was triggering his reactions.””
The room became silent.
Maria felt her stomach tighten.
“Someone?””
Samuel looked directly at Daniel.
“Your husband knows.””
Daniel’s expression turned dark.
“You’re lying.””
Samuel laughed softly.
“You always did hate when the truth came from someone else.””
Thomas stepped between them.
“This needs to stop.””
Samuel looked at him.
“You’re the last person who should say that.””
Maria looked at Thomas.
“What does he mean?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Samuel smiled.
“Ask your protector.””
Maria turned.
“Thomas?””
His silence was painful.
“How long have you known?””
Thomas looked away.
“Since the beginning.””
Maria felt betrayed all over again.
“You watched them blame me.””
“I was trying to find proof.””
“You had proof!””
“Not enough.””
Maria’s voice broke.
“You let me lose everything because you needed more proof?””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I thought I could stop it before it reached Ethan.””
“But it did.””
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
A doctor entered the room.
“Ethan’s condition has stabilized.””
Everyone turned.
The doctor looked confused by the number of people gathered.
“But I need to ask something.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What?””
The doctor held a small evidence bag.
“We found traces of a substance in Ethan’s blood.””
Maria looked at the bag.
The doctor continued.
“It’s unusual. It’s not something a child would accidentally ingest.””
Claire looked horrified.
“Are you saying someone poisoned him?””
The doctor hesitated.
“I’m saying someone introduced something into his environment.””
Everyone looked at Daniel.
Then Samuel.
Then Thomas.
The doctor continued.
“And there is something else.””
“What?”” Maria asked.
The doctor looked at the report.
“The substance matches a compound created in a private laboratory.””
Samuel’s face remained calm.
Daniel looked away.
Maria noticed.
“You know what it is.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The doctor looked between them.
“The compound was registered under a company name.””
“What company?”” Claire asked.
The doctor hesitated.
Then said:
“Hawthorne Biotech.””
The room went silent.
Maria felt like the floor had disappeared.
The company belonged to Daniel.
The same company he had spent years building.
The same company whose name was on the hospital walls.
The same company everyone trusted.
Daniel finally spoke.
“It’s not what you think.””
Maria looked at him.
“Then explain.””
He couldn’t.
Not immediately.
And that hesitation told everyone something.
Samuel stepped closer.
“Daniel didn’t want Ethan hurt.””
Maria looked at him.
“Then why?””
Samuel’s expression became serious.
“Because the person who hurt Ethan wasn’t trying to kill him.””
Everyone froze.
“They were trying to make him sick enough…”
Samuel paused.
“…to prove something.””
Maria felt a cold wave pass through her.
“What?””
Samuel looked toward the hospital door.
“Someone wanted to prove that Ethan’s condition could be controlled.””
The lights above them flickered.
Then Maria’s phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
She opened it.
There was only one sentence.
*You are looking in the wrong direction, Maria.*
Then another message arrived.
A photograph.
Maria opened it.
Her face went pale.
It was a picture taken inside the Hawthorne mansion.
Taken that night.
In Ethan’s nursery.
And standing beside the crib…
was Maria herself.

But the timestamp was impossible.
Because the photo had been taken three hours after she had already left the house.
