Chapter 4: The Father’s Hidden Fear
Maria stared at the photograph.
She waited for her mind to reject what her eyes were seeing.
It didn’t.
The image was grainy, captured from a hospital security camera, but there was no mistake.
Daniel Hawthorne stood outside Ethan’s hospital room.
In his hand was the same small bottle Maria had seen in the nursery footage.
The same bottle Linda had found hidden inside Ethan’s toy basket.
The same bottle that had nearly destroyed Maria’s life.
“No,” Maria whispered.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Daniel wouldn’t…”
She stopped.
Because only a few hours earlier, she had said something similar about everyone.
Claire wouldn’t accuse me.
Thomas wouldn’t hide something.
The Hawthornes wouldn’t believe I hurt Ethan.
And every time, she had been wrong.
Thomas watched her carefully.
“Now you understand why I deleted the footage.””
Maria looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice was sharper.
“I understand that you hid the truth.””
Thomas didn’t respond.
Maria held up the phone.
“You had this evidence.””
“Yes.””
“You knew someone entered the nursery.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Ethan was being exposed to something dangerous.””
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“And you let them blame me.””
Thomas looked away.
For the first time, his silence felt like an admission.
Linda stepped closer.
“Maria, we need to go to the hospital.””
Maria nodded.
She was still trying to process everything.
Daniel.
Claire.
Thomas.
The entire family had pieces of the truth.
And somehow, she was the only one who had been punished.
They rushed out of the mansion.
The drive to the hospital felt endless.
No one spoke.
Rain began hitting the windshield halfway there, turning the city lights into blurry streaks.
Maria sat in the back seat beside Linda, staring at the hospital message still open on her phone.
*Patient condition has changed. Immediate family requested.*
Those words terrified her.
Not because she didn’t understand them.
Because she did.
Something had happened to Ethan.
And she wasn’t there.
For two years, she had been the person who ran to him when he cried.
The person who knew when his smile was fake.
The person who noticed when something was wrong.
But tonight, she was outside.
A stranger.
When they reached the hospital, Thomas immediately walked ahead.
Maria noticed something strange.
People recognized him.
A nurse looked at him and stepped aside.
A security guard nodded.
He had been here before.
Many times.
Maria followed him through the hallway.
“Why have you been watching Ethan?””
Thomas stopped.
Maria nearly walked into him.
He turned around.
“Because I was hired to protect him.””
“From what?””
Thomas looked toward the hospital room.
“That depends on who you believe.””
Before Maria could answer, they reached Ethan’s room.
Claire was sitting beside the bed.
Her face was pale.
Her hair was messy.
She looked nothing like the woman who had accused Maria earlier.
She looked like a mother who had been terrified all day.
The moment Claire saw Maria, her expression changed.
“What are you doing here?””
Maria didn’t answer.
Her eyes moved immediately to Ethan.
The little boy was sleeping.
There were wires attached to him.
A monitor beside the bed beeped steadily.
Maria’s chest tightened.
She wanted to run to him.
But she stopped herself.
Claire noticed.
For a brief second, guilt crossed her face.
Then it disappeared.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Maria looked at her.
“You still think I hurt him?””
Claire looked down.
“I don’t know what to think.””
“That’s convenient.””
“Maria…”
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You don’t get to say my name like we’re friends.””
The room became silent.
Daniel wasn’t there.
That surprised Maria.
“Where is your husband?””
Claire looked away.
“He left.””
“Why?””
No answer.
Thomas walked toward the bed.
“Claire, we need to talk.””
She looked at him.
“You promised me this would never happen.””
Maria’s eyes narrowed.
“Promised what?””
Claire immediately looked uncomfortable.
Thomas stepped between them.
“Not here.””
Maria laughed quietly.
“Not here?””
She pointed toward Ethan.
“My entire life was destroyed today because everyone decided to have secrets.””
Her voice broke.
“And now you want privacy?””
Claire looked at Ethan.
Then whispered:
“I didn’t know he would get this sick.””
Maria froze.
“What did you say?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know.””
Linda moved closer.
“Claire.””
“No.””
Claire wiped her face.
“I need to explain.””
Maria crossed her arms.
“Then explain.””
Claire looked at Ethan.
“When Ethan was born, the doctors said he had a rare sensitivity. Nothing dangerous. Just something we needed to monitor.””
Maria listened.
“Then months ago, he started getting sick.””
Claire swallowed.
“Coughing. Rashes. Breathing problems.””
“His allergies,” Maria said.
Claire nodded.
“The doctors told us someone in the house might be exposing him to something.””
Maria felt her heart sink.
“And you suspected me.””
Claire didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“I saw you with him every day,” Claire whispered.
“You knew his routines. You knew everything about him.””
Maria stared.
“So you thought the person who loved him most was the person hurting him?””
Claire looked ashamed.
“I was scared.””
“No.””
Maria shook her head.
“You were afraid, and you chose me because I was the easiest person to blame.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
But Maria wasn’t ready to forgive.
Not yet.
“What was in the bottle?””
Claire looked confused.
“What bottle?””
Maria pulled out her phone and showed her the image.
Claire’s face changed.
“I’ve never seen that.””
“Then why was Daniel holding it?””
Claire looked toward the door.
And suddenly, Maria saw something.
Fear.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“Claire,” Maria said slowly.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Before Claire could answer, the hospital room door opened.
Daniel walked in.
Everyone turned.
He looked exhausted.
But his eyes immediately went to Maria.
Then Thomas.
Then the phone in Maria’s hand.
His expression hardened.
“What are you doing here?””
Maria stepped forward.
“Trying to find out why my name was destroyed while your family hid the truth.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Who told her?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel sighed.
“You shouldn’t have gotten involved.””
Maria stared.
“Gotten involved?””
She almost laughed.
“Your son is lying in that bed because someone hurt him.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
A warning.
But Daniel ignored him.
“This is exactly why we should have kept you away from this.””
Maria felt a chill.
“Kept me away?””
Daniel looked at her.
“You were never supposed to see those files.””
Silence.
Maria slowly turned toward Thomas.
“Files?””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
Daniel realized his mistake too late.
Maria stepped closer.
“What files?””
No one spoke.
Then Ethan suddenly moved.
Everyone turned.
The monitor changed.
A nurse rushed in.
“Everyone back!””
The room exploded into movement.
Claire grabbed Ethan’s hand.
Daniel stepped away.
Maria stood frozen near the door.
Then she noticed something.
A small object had fallen from Daniel’s coat pocket when he moved.
A bottle.
The same shape.
The same size.
Maria’s eyes locked onto it.
Daniel saw where she was looking.
And for the first time…
he looked afraid.
The nurse shouted for security.
Thomas moved quickly.
“Maria, don’t touch it.””
But Maria was no longer listening.
Because there was a label on the bottle.
A name.
Not Ethan’s.
Not Daniel’s.
Someone else’s.
She stepped closer.
And read it.
*DR. SAMUEL HAWTHORNE*
Maria’s blood ran cold.
Dr. Samuel Hawthorne.
Daniel’s father.
The legendary doctor whose name was engraved on the hospital wing downstairs.
The man everyone in the family had said died five years ago.
Maria looked at Daniel.
“Why does your dead father’s name appear on the bottle that almost killed your son?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel whispered something that made the entire room go silent.
“He isn’t dead.””
Maria stared at him.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“He’s been alive this whole time.””
May you like
And behind him…
the hospital room door slowly opened.
