Chapter 6: The Woman in the Impossible Photograph

Maria couldn’t breathe.

She stared at the image on her phone.

The nursery.

The crib.

The same blue dinosaur sitting on the floor.

And standing beside Ethan’s empty crib…

was her.

Or someone who looked exactly like her.

The same dark hair.

The same gray sweater.

The same necklace she wore every day.

The same way she held her hands when she was nervous.

But Maria knew one thing with absolute certainty.

It wasn’t possible.

She had left the Hawthorne mansion hours ago.

She had been at the hospital.

Everyone in the room had seen her arrive.

Everyone knew where she was.

So how could she be standing inside that nursery?

“Maria?””

Linda’s voice pulled her back.

Maria didn’t answer.

She simply handed her the phone.

Linda looked at the picture.

Her expression changed immediately.

“Oh my God.””

Claire stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Maria hesitated.

Then she showed everyone.

The reaction was instant.

Claire stepped backward.

Daniel’s face went pale.

Thomas took the phone from Linda.

He studied the image carefully.

“No.””

Maria looked at him.

“You know something.””

Thomas didn’t respond.

“You know something,” she repeated.

Thomas zoomed in on the photograph.

His fingers stopped.

“What?””

Maria looked at the screen.

Thomas pointed at the corner of the image.

“Look.””

She leaned closer.

At first, she saw nothing.

Then she noticed it.

A small detail.

The reflection in the nursery window.

A person standing outside.

Watching.

Maria felt a chill.

“Who is that?””

Thomas looked at Daniel.

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Who is that?”” Maria asked again.

Daniel closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he looked older.

More tired.

Like he had been carrying a secret for too long.

“My sister.””

Silence.

Maria frowned.

“Your sister?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Rebecca.””

Claire looked shocked.

“You told me she was gone.””

“She was.””

Maria stared.

“You just said she was your sister.””

Daniel looked toward the photograph.

“She disappeared twelve years ago.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Maria shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“That’s not possible.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because I know Rebecca.””

The room went completely still.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What did you say?””

Maria realized too late.

She had revealed something she had never told anyone.

She looked at the photo again.

“I know her.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“How?””

Maria swallowed.

“When I was a child.””

Her voice became quieter.

“My mother worked for a wealthy family. They had a daughter named Rebecca.””

Daniel stared.

“Where?””

Maria looked at him.

“The Hawthorne family.””

The silence that followed felt unbearable.

Claire whispered:

“No.””

Maria continued.

“She was kind. She used to bring me books when she visited my mother at work. She told me I should never let anyone decide what I was worth.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“Rebecca disappeared before you were born into this family.””

Maria frowned.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

Then back at her.

“Rebecca disappeared fifteen years ago.””

Maria felt confused.

“No. That can’t be right.””

She searched her memories.

A young woman with warm brown eyes.

A silver bracelet.

A voice that always made her feel safe.

“She was older,” Maria whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“How old were you?””

“Seven.””

“That’s impossible.””

Maria shook her head.

“No. I remember.””

Thomas suddenly spoke.

“Maria.””

She turned.

His expression had changed.

Not suspicion.

Recognition.

“What?””

Thomas reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a worn photograph.

Maria’s heart stopped.

Because the person in the picture was the same woman from her childhood.

Rebecca Hawthorne.

Standing beside a young Maria.

Maria slowly reached for it.

“Where did you get this?””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“From Samuel.””

Daniel took the photograph.

His hands trembled.

“Why would he have this?””

Maria looked at him.

“Because maybe she wasn’t gone.””

Samuel, who had been silent near the window, finally spoke.

“She wasn’t.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel’s face became angry.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she was alive?””

Samuel looked at him.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You let me believe my own sister was dead.””

Samuel’s expression hardened.

“You were better off believing that.””

Maria felt a growing sense of fear.

Because every answer created more questions.

“What happened to Rebecca?””

Nobody answered.

Finally, Samuel said:

“She discovered the truth.””

“The truth about what?””

Samuel looked at Ethan.

“The same truth that is threatening him now.””

Maria looked at Ethan’s bed.

A child who had no idea how many secrets surrounded him.

“What did she discover?””

Samuel’s eyes moved to Daniel.

“Your brother built a company on research that was never supposed to leave the laboratory.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Stop.””

“No.””

Samuel’s voice became colder.

“People deserve to know.””

Maria looked between them.

“Research?””

Samuel nodded.

“The compound found in Ethan’s blood.””

Everyone became silent.

“It was created years ago,” Samuel continued.

“Not as medicine.””

Maria’s stomach tightened.

“Then what was it?””

Samuel answered quietly.

“A test.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Daniel looked furious.

“You’re twisting everything.””

“Am I?””

Samuel looked at him.

“Then tell them why Rebecca disappeared.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Maria watched him.

And she knew.

Whatever happened, Daniel was hiding something.

The hospital room door suddenly opened.

A nurse rushed in.

“Excuse me.””

Everyone turned.

The nurse looked nervous.

“Mr. Hawthorne, there’s someone asking for you downstairs.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

The nurse looked at the paper in her hand.

“Rebecca Hawthorne.””

Nobody moved.

Claire whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Maria looked at Daniel.

But Daniel was already walking toward the door.

“No.””

Thomas grabbed his arm.

“Daniel.””

Daniel pulled away.

“If it’s really her…”

His voice broke.

For the first time, Maria saw something human in him.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Pain.

“If it’s really my sister, I need to see her.””

Thomas looked at Maria.

A silent warning.

But Maria followed anyway.

She needed answers.

They moved through the hospital corridors toward the lobby.

Every step felt heavier.

When they reached the entrance, Daniel stopped.

A woman stood near the front desk.

Older than the woman in Maria’s memories.

But unmistakable.

Same eyes.

Same presence.

Same silver bracelet around her wrist.

Maria stopped walking.

Rebecca turned.

Her eyes immediately found Maria.

And she froze.

“Maria?””

Maria’s heart pounded.

“You remember me?””

Rebecca’s face filled with emotion.

Then she whispered:

“I never forgot you.””

Daniel stepped forward.

His voice shook.

“Rebecca.””

The woman looked at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Rebecca said something that made everyone freeze.

“You have no idea what your father did to my life.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“Father is dead.””

Rebecca stared at him.

“No.””

She glanced toward Samuel standing behind them.

“He’s not.””

Everyone turned.

Samuel said nothing.

Rebecca looked directly at Maria.

Then she reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I came here because Ethan is in danger.””

Maria took a step closer.

“What’s inside?””

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“A confession.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Rebecca handed the envelope to Maria.

“Written by the person who started all of this.””

Maria looked down.

The handwriting on the front was familiar.

She had seen it before.

On old medical documents.

On family records.

On the bottle label.

The name written there made her blood run cold.

*Dr. Samuel Hawthorne.*

Maria looked up.

“But he’s standing right there.””

Rebecca nodded.

“That’s why you need to read it.””

She lowered her voice.

“Because the man standing in front of you is not the real Samuel Hawthorne.””

The entire hallway went silent.

Maria looked back.

The old man by the hospital door was still watching them.

Then Rebecca whispered the words that changed everything.

May you like

“The man you think is Ethan’s grandfather…”

“…is the reason Ethan was born in the first place.””
