Chapter 9: The Original Will and the Final Betrayal

The room seemed to shrink around them.

Victoria stared at the document in Chloe's hands.

“No,” she whispered.

Robert's face had turned pale.

Richard stepped forward.

“Let me see that.””

Chloe handed him the original will.

He examined the paper carefully, then compared the signature with the documents in his briefcase.

His expression changed.

“This appears to be authentic.””

Robert slammed his hand against the table.

“That's impossible.””

Richard looked up.

“Why?””

“Because Margaret destroyed that will.””

“Apparently, she didn't.””

Robert grabbed the document.

Richard pulled it away.

“Do not touch the evidence.””

Elena looked at Victoria.

“Why would Grandmother leave everything to you?””

Victoria shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Chloe laughed bitterly.

“Of course you don't. None of you know anything.””

She walked toward the fireplace and placed the black box on the mantel.

“My entire life has been a lie. Robert told me I was his biological daughter. Margaret told everyone I didn't exist. And now I'm supposed to believe that the woman standing in front of me is my mother?””

Victoria approached her carefully.

“Amelia, I have never stopped looking for you.””

Chloe's eyes flashed.

“My name is Chloe.””

Victoria stopped.

“I'm sorry.””

“You should be.””

Elena watched her sister.

There was something familiar in the way Chloe held her jaw when she was angry.

They had the same eyes.

The same sharp cheekbones.

And the same habit of pressing their lips together when they were trying not to cry.

Elena looked at Richard.

“What does the will actually say?””

He read the relevant section.

“Margaret Sinclair appointed Victoria Sinclair as the sole controlling beneficiary of the family trust. Elena and Amelia were named as equal inheritors of the remaining personal estate.””

Robert laughed.

“That's a forgery.””

Richard continued.

“The will was witnessed by two independent solicitors and registered with a private legal office.””

Robert's expression hardened.

“Those solicitors are dead.””

“Both?”” Elena asked.

“Yes.””

Richard examined the signatures.

“One of them died last year. The other is still alive.””

Robert froze.

Elena noticed.

“Who?””

Richard read the name.

“Jonathan Pierce.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I remember him.””

Robert suddenly reached for the document.

But Marcus blocked his path.

“Don't.””

Robert pushed him.

Marcus stumbled against the table.

The police officers who had accompanied them immediately moved in.

“Mr. Bennett, step away from the evidence.””

Robert raised his hands.

“This is a private family matter.””

“No,” Elena said.

“It stopped being private when you helped destroy my family.””

Robert turned toward her.

“You have no idea what your grandmother did.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked at Victoria.

“She was supposed to give me half of the estate. She promised that if I helped her secure Amelia's future, she would recognize my investment.””

Victoria stared.

“Margaret never promised you anything.””

“She did!””

“You used my daughter to negotiate with her.””

Robert's expression twisted.

“Because she was the only thing Margaret cared about!””

Chloe stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Robert looked at her.

“Amelia—”

“Stop calling me that!””

Chloe's voice broke.

“You told me my mother abandoned me. You told me Elena stole my inheritance. You made me hate people I had never met.””

Robert's face softened into a practiced expression of concern.

“I was protecting you.””

“No. You were using me.””

He stepped toward her.

“You wouldn't have had anything without me.””

Chloe shook her head.

“I had a mother. You took her away.””

Victoria began crying.

“I am so sorry.””

Chloe looked at her for a long moment.

Then she turned away.

Elena stepped beside her.

“Chloe.””

Chloe flinched.

“Don't.””

“I know you helped Harrison.””

“I know.””

“You knew he was married.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he was stealing from the trust.””

Chloe nodded.

“I thought the money was mine.””

Elena looked at her.

“And when he hit me?””

Chloe lowered her eyes.

“I should have stopped him.””

“You laughed.””

“I know.””

“You wore my clothes. You stood in my home and told me to leave.””

Chloe's face crumpled.

“I know.””

Elena felt the old anger rising again.

She wanted to scream.

She wanted to remind Chloe that she had spent months watching another woman sleep beside her husband.

But she also saw something else.

A woman who had been lied to for her entire life.

A woman who had become exactly the kind of person she hated because someone had convinced her that cruelty was the only way to survive.

Elena took a step back.

“I can't forgive you.””

Chloe nodded.

“I don't expect you to.””

Richard interrupted.

“There's another matter.””

He held up the will.

“The original document identifies Victoria as the controlling beneficiary, but it also includes a condition.””

Victoria looked at him.

“What condition?””

Richard turned to the final page.

“Victoria must personally confirm her identity and accept the inheritance before the estate can be transferred.””

Robert smiled.

“Then it's useless.””

Elena frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Victoria signed a document renouncing her inheritance twenty years ago.””

Richard looked at him.

“Do you have a copy?””

Robert reached into his jacket.

He produced a folded sheet of paper.

Victoria stared at it.

“I never signed that.””

Robert smiled.

“Your signature says otherwise.””

Richard examined the document.

The signature was convincing.

But Elena noticed the date.

It was dated three months after Victoria's supposed disappearance.

“Where was it signed?””

Robert shrugged.

“London.””

Victoria shook her head.

“I was in Paris.””

Robert's smile faded.

Elena turned toward Richard.

“Can we verify that?””

“Yes.””

Robert suddenly laughed.

“You can verify whatever you want. It won't matter.””

He leaned closer.

“Because the woman who signed that document is already dead.””

Victoria stared at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Robert looked directly at her.

“The woman who died in the hospital was not Margaret Sinclair.””

Silence.

Elena felt a cold wave move through her body.

“What?””

Robert continued.

“Margaret disappeared before the hospital admission. Someone else was placed in her room. The doctor issued a false death certificate, and the family accepted it because nobody was allowed to see the body.””

Victoria took a step backward.

“That's impossible.””

Robert smiled.

“Ask your precious doctor.””

Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed almost immediately.

“What?””

He listened.

Then he looked at Elena.

“Dr. Carter has confessed to falsifying the medical records.””

Elena's stomach tightened.

“Who died in that hospital?””

Richard ended the call.

“The investigation has identified the woman as an unidentified patient who had been admitted under a false name.””

Victoria covered her mouth.

“Then Margaret…”

Robert began laughing.

“She is alive.””

Elena stared at him.

“Where?””

Robert looked toward the window.

“Somewhere none of you can reach.””

Chloe suddenly moved toward the door.

Robert grabbed her wrist.

“Where do you think you're going?””

She pulled away.

“Let me go!””

He tightened his grip.

“You are not leaving.””

The officers stepped forward.

“Mr. Bennett, release her.””

Robert shoved Chloe toward the wall.

She cried out.

Victoria rushed forward.

“Don't touch my daughter!””

Robert turned and struck Victoria across the face.

Elena screamed.

Marcus tackled him before he could strike again.

The officers restrained Robert and forced him onto the floor.

As they handcuffed him, he continued shouting.

“You think you've won? Margaret is the only person who knows where the money really went!””

Richard looked at Elena.

“What money?””

Robert laughed through clenched teeth.

“The money that disappeared from the estate twenty years ago. The money Margaret used to buy her silence. The money that belongs to the person who actually controls the Sinclair fortune.””

Elena stared.

“Who?””

Robert looked at her.

“Your mother.””

Victoria's face went white.

Then Robert added:

“Not Victoria. The other one.””

Elena felt her heart stop.

The other mother?

Robert was escorted out.

The room fell silent.

Victoria sat down slowly, one hand pressed against her cheek.

Chloe stood beside the fireplace, trembling.

Elena looked at Richard.

“Who is my other mother?””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Thomas approached them.

“Miss Elena…”

She turned.

“Not another secret, Thomas. Please.””

He swallowed.

“Your grandmother told me something shortly before she died. She said that if Victoria ever returned, I should ask her one question.””

Victoria looked up.

“What question?””

Thomas's voice trembled.

“Where is the woman who gave birth to Elena?””

Victoria's eyes widened.

Then she began shaking her head.

“No.””

Elena stepped forward.

“What?””

Victoria looked at her.

“Your grandmother told me that Charles was your father. She never told me that another woman was involved.””

Richard took the original birth certificate from the table.

“Then why is the mother's name Victoria Sinclair?””

Victoria stared at the document.

“Because Margaret changed it.””

Elena felt sick.

“Why?””

Victoria's voice broke.

“Because I agreed to raise you. But I wasn't the woman who gave birth to you.””

Elena stumbled backward.

“Then who was?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Your biological mother was Margaret Sinclair's daughter.””

Elena stared at her.

“But Margaret was…”

“Your grandmother,” Victoria whispered.

“And your biological mother.””

The words seemed to echo through the room.

Elena looked at the woman who had raised her.

The woman whose photographs filled the mansion.

The woman whose voice she could still remember telling her bedtime stories.

Her grandmother had been her mother.

And Victoria had been the woman who raised her.

Richard looked through the documents.

“If Margaret gave birth to Elena, then Charles Whitmore was the biological father?””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

Elena closed her eyes.

Her family tree had become a maze of lies.

Victoria continued.

“Margaret was very young when she became pregnant. Charles was married, and his family refused to recognize the child. Margaret gave birth in secret. She asked me to raise you because she believed she could protect you better from the Whitmores.””

Elena opened her eyes.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she was ashamed. And because she believed the truth would destroy the family.””

Elena let out a broken laugh.

“She destroyed it herself.””

Victoria reached for her hand.

This time, Elena did not pull away.

But before either woman could speak, Richard's phone rang again.

He answered.

Listened.

Then slowly lowered it.

“Mrs. Whitmore…”

Elena turned.

“What now?””

“The hospital has received a call from someone claiming to be Margaret Sinclair.””

Elena froze.

Richard continued.

“She wants to see you.””

“Where?””

“At St. Catherine's.””

Elena stared at him.

“Is she really alive?””

Richard nodded.

“And she has requested that you come alone.””

Elena looked toward the window.

For the first time in her life, she was about to meet the woman she had called grandmother.

The woman who had given birth to her.

The woman who had lied to her.

And the woman who might finally explain why every person she loved had been forced to live inside a carefully constructed lie.

But as Elena reached for her coat, a final message appeared on her phone.

It came from Harrison.

Don't go to the hospital. Margaret isn't the person you think she is.

A second message followed.

I know who ordered your grandmother's murder.

Then the final message arrived.

And the person responsible is already waiting for you.

Elena looked at Richard.

“Get the car.””

She was done being afraid.

May you like

Whatever waited at the hospital, she would face it.

Even if the final truth destroyed the last piece of the family she had left.
