Chapter 4: The Woman Who Came Back from the Dead

The woman approaching the Sinclair mansion looked as though she had stepped out of a photograph taken twenty years earlier.

Her black coat was perfectly tailored. Her dark hair fell neatly over her shoulders, and a pair of oversized sunglasses concealed most of her face.

But Elena recognized her eyes.

They were the same pale gray eyes staring back at her from the photograph.

Victoria Sinclair.

The woman her grandmother had supposedly never mentioned.

The woman who, according to everything Elena had been taught, should not have existed.

Richard Collins moved toward the entrance.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I suggest you remain inside.””

Elena ignored him.

“I want to hear what she has to say.””

Thomas Reed stepped between them.

“Miss Elena, please. Your grandmother was terrified of this woman.””

Elena turned sharply.

“You knew Victoria?””

Thomas hesitated.

“I knew of her.””

“That isn't an answer.””

Before he could explain, the front doorbell rang.

A housekeeper opened the door.

The woman removed her sunglasses.

“Good morning,” she said calmly.

“I'm here to see my niece.””

Elena felt her stomach tighten.

Victoria looked directly at her.

“Hello, Elena.””

There was no surprise in her voice.

No hesitation.

It was as though she had expected this meeting for years.

Elena remained at the top of the staircase.

“Who are you?””

Victoria smiled faintly.

“You know who I am.””

“I know what your name is. That's not the same thing.””

“Your grandmother taught you to ask difficult questions. I'm glad some things haven't changed.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Miss Sinclair, I believe you should explain your unexpected appearance.””

Victoria glanced at him.

“Still protecting the family, Richard? How exhausting.””

“I'm protecting Mrs. Whitmore.””

“Are you? Or are you protecting the trust that pays your fees?””

Richard's jaw tightened.

Elena descended the staircase.

“Stop talking around me. Why did my grandmother hide you?””

Victoria looked at her for several seconds.

Then she removed her gloves.

“Because Margaret was ashamed of me.””

“Why?””

“Because I married a man she despised.””

Elena frowned.

Victoria continued.

“Your grandmother believed that love made women foolish. She was right about many things, but she was wrong about one. I loved my husband, and I refused to abandon him simply because Margaret disapproved.””

“What happened to him?””

“He died.””

Victoria said it without emotion.

“Then Margaret blamed me for everything that followed. She removed my name from the family records, changed the trust documents, and told everyone I had left the country.””

Elena studied her face.

“Why are you here now?””

“Because Margaret is dead. Harrison is being investigated. And the family fortune is about to become the subject of a very unpleasant legal battle.””

Richard interrupted.

“The trust is not available for private negotiations.””

Victoria laughed.

“Still pretending this is about money?””

She turned toward Elena.

“Your grandmother left you a very incomplete picture of your inheritance.””

Elena folded her arms.

“Then complete it.””

Victoria reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.

It showed two young girls standing in a garden.

One was Elena.

The other was a little girl with dark hair and a pale ribbon in her hair.

Elena stared.

She had never seen the photograph before.

“Who is that?””

“My daughter.””

Victoria's voice softened.

“Her name was Amelia.””

Elena looked up.

“You had a daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't I know?””

“Because Margaret took her from me.””

Silence fell over the hallway.

Victoria continued.

“She was only six months old when your grandmother convinced a judge that I was unfit to raise her. Margaret had money, influence, and excellent lawyers. I had a husband who had just died and no one willing to defend me.””

Elena felt a cold sensation spread through her chest.

“Where is Amelia now?””

Victoria looked away.

“I don't know.””

Richard placed his briefcase on the table.

“That's a serious accusation. Do you have evidence?””

Victoria removed a folded document.

“I have the original guardianship order. And I have a letter from Margaret explaining why she wanted Amelia kept away from me.””

Elena reached for the paper.

But Victoria pulled it back.

“Not so quickly.””

Elena's expression hardened.

“You came here to tell me something. Now you're withholding it?””

“I'm asking you to listen before you decide whom to trust.””

Victoria looked toward Thomas.

“Especially him.””

Thomas stiffened.

“Don't.””

Elena turned.

“What is she talking about?””

Victoria smiled without warmth.

“Ask your grandmother's loyal driver why he was paid by two different accounts for twenty years.””

Thomas's face drained of color.

Richard immediately intervened.

“Miss Sinclair, this conversation is over.””

Victoria placed her sunglasses back on.

“Of course. You always did prefer conversations that ended before the truth emerged.””

She walked toward the door.

Elena stepped forward.

“Wait!””

Victoria stopped.

“Where can I find you?””

Victoria handed her a business card.

“Tomorrow afternoon. Four o'clock. The old Sinclair hotel.””

Then she leaned closer.

“One more thing, Elena. Do not let Harrison's arrest make you feel safe. He was never the person making the decisions.””

The door closed behind her.

Elena turned toward Thomas.

“What did she mean about the payments?””

Thomas looked down.

“Miss Elena, I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

He took a long breath.

“Your grandmother paid me from two accounts because I was performing two separate duties.””

“What duties?””

“One was driving her. The other was watching your husband.””

Elena stared.

“You were watching Harrison?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Since the year before your wedding.””

The answer struck her harder than she expected.

Her grandmother had suspected Harrison before Elena married him.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she believed you would reject the accusation. She wanted proof before destroying your marriage.””

Elena laughed bitterly.

“She let me marry him anyway.””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“She thought he might change.””

Elena looked at the photograph of the two little girls.

Nothing about the family story made sense anymore.

Her grandmother had hidden a daughter.

She had apparently protected Daniel.

She had watched Harrison for years.

And now a mysterious woman had appeared claiming that the entire inheritance had been built on lies.

Elena looked at Richard.

“I want to see Daniel.””

Richard nodded.

“He is waiting at the police station.””

“Then we're leaving.””

As Elena approached the front door, her phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke quietly.

“Mrs. Whitmore?””

“Who is this?””

“My name is Daniel.””

Elena stopped breathing.

“Daniel Whitmore?””

“Yes.””

“Where are you?””

“I need you to listen carefully. Don't go to the police station.””

“Why?””

“Because the person who arranged my disappearance is already there.””

The line crackled.

Then Daniel whispered something that made Elena's blood run cold.

“Harrison wasn't the only person who signed the papers that destroyed your grandmother.””

The call ended.

Elena stared at the phone.

Richard looked at her.

“What happened?””

She slowly raised her eyes.

“Daniel says someone at the police station is working with the people who tried to steal the estate.””

Before Richard could respond, a second message appeared.

It contained a photograph of Harrison sitting inside an interrogation room.

Beside him stood a man wearing a police uniform.

The man's face was clearly visible.

Richard recognized him immediately.

“That's Detective Miller.””

Elena looked at him.

“Do you know him?””

May you like

Richard's expression turned grim.

“He was the officer assigned to investigate your grandmother's death.””
