Chapter 8: The Daughter Hidden in Plain Sight

The police station smelled of stale coffee and disinfectant.

Elena walked through the entrance with Richard beside her, while Victoria followed several steps behind.

Marcus had already contacted a criminal defense attorney.

But none of them had prepared Elena for the sight waiting behind the interrogation-room glass.

Daniel Whitmore sat at a metal table.

His hair was longer than in the photographs. His face looked thinner, and a scar ran from his left temple toward his cheek.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

He was alive.

Elena entered the room.

Daniel looked up.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then he stood.

“Elena?””

She approached him slowly.

“You're alive.””

Daniel nodded.

“I'm sorry.””

She stopped in front of him.

“Do you have any idea what I've been through?””

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I know you were told I died. I know Harrison lied to you. And I know Margaret left you with more questions than answers.””

Elena's voice trembled.

“Why didn't you contact me?””

Daniel pulled out a chair.

“Because the people who arranged my disappearance threatened to hurt you if I came back.””

“Who?””

He looked at Richard.

“Before I answer, I need to know whether you have the original trust documents.””

Richard nodded.

“They're at the estate.””

“Then you need to move them immediately.””

Elena sat down.

“Daniel, stop talking in riddles.””

He took a breath.

“Harrison wasn't working alone. Chloe's father, Robert Bennett, was the person financing the operation.””

Elena frowned.

“Why would he care about the Sinclair estate?””

“Because he believed his daughter was the rightful heir.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“She is.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Victoria.””

She nodded.

Daniel's expression softened.

“It's been a long time.””

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes, it has.””

Elena looked between them.

“Then explain everything.””

Daniel began.

“Three years ago, I discovered that Harrison was moving money through a network of companies. At first, I thought he was simply stealing from the estate. Then I found a document showing that he had been paying Robert Bennett.””

“For what?””

“To locate Victoria's daughter.””

Elena looked at Victoria.

“Amelia.””

Daniel nodded.

“Robert knew Amelia was the missing Sinclair heir. He had adopted her through an arrangement made by Margaret's lawyers. But he never knew the full story.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“He was my husband.””

Elena turned.

“Robert Bennett was your husband?””

“Yes.””

Daniel continued.

“Robert wanted control of the estate. He believed that if he could establish Amelia's identity, he could claim the inheritance on her behalf.””

“Why would Harrison help him?””

“Because Harrison was promised a share of the money.””

Elena shook her head.

“But Chloe was already working with Harrison.””

“Exactly. Harrison believed Chloe was simply Robert's daughter. He didn't know she was the missing heiress.””

Victoria interrupted.

“He knew she was connected to the family. He just didn't know how closely.””

Daniel nodded.

“Chloe was raised believing her biological mother had abandoned her. Robert told her that Margaret had stolen her inheritance and that Harrison could help her recover it.””

Elena stared at the table.

“So Chloe believed she was getting justice.””

“That's what she was told.””

“And the affair?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Harrison used it to keep Chloe close. He promised her marriage, money, and control of the estate. He needed her to cooperate with the forged documents.””

Elena laughed bitterly.

“Then she was both a victim and a participant.””

“Yes.””

Victoria placed her hands on the table.

“I want to see my daughter.””

Daniel looked at her sadly.

“She doesn't want to see you.””

Victoria's shoulders fell.

“Why?””

“Because Robert told her you abandoned her.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“He always said he would make her hate me.””

Elena felt a strange wave of sympathy for the woman.

But she was not ready to forgive anyone.

“Where is Chloe now?””

Daniel answered.

“She has been staying at the Bennett residence. But she knows the investigation is getting close.””

Richard's phone rang.

He stepped outside.

When he returned, his expression was grave.

“Chloe has disappeared.””

Elena stood.

“What?””

“Her apartment is empty. Her passport and several documents are missing.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Then we need to find Robert.””

Victoria looked toward the door.

“I know where he is.””

Everyone turned.

“He has a private property near Lakewood. He used to take Amelia there when she was a child.””

Richard immediately called Marcus.

Within an hour, they were driving toward the property.

The house stood behind a tall iron fence.

It was an elegant mansion surrounded by pine trees, with security cameras mounted at every entrance.

A man opened the door.

Robert Bennett.

He was in his late sixties, with silver hair and a broad smile that disappeared when he saw Victoria.

“You.””

Victoria walked inside without waiting for permission.

“Where is my daughter?””

Robert laughed.

“Your daughter?””

“You know exactly what I mean.””

He glanced at Elena.

“So this is the famous Elena Sinclair.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Where is Chloe?””

Robert poured himself a drink.

“She's safe.””

“Where?””

“Why should I tell you?””

Richard placed a legal notice on the table.

“Mr. Bennett, you are under investigation for conspiracy, financial fraud, and identity manipulation.””

Robert barely looked at it.

“You people always think paperwork makes you powerful.””

Victoria slapped the glass from his hand.

It shattered against the fireplace.

“Where is Amelia?””

Robert's expression hardened.

“You lost the right to ask that question when you allowed Margaret to take her.””

“I never allowed it!””

“You disappeared. You left her with strangers.””

“I was threatened!””

Robert laughed.

“Excuses.””

Victoria's hands trembled.

“You promised me she would have a good life.””

“She did. I gave her everything.””

“You told her I was dead.””

Robert shrugged.

“It was easier than explaining why her mother abandoned her.””

Elena moved closer.

“Did you know Harrison was planning to steal the estate?””

Robert smiled.

“Of course.””

“Did you know he was using Daniel's identity?””

“Daniel was supposed to remain dead.””

The room went silent.

Robert seemed to realize what he had said.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You knew I was alive.””

Robert's expression changed.

“You should have stayed away.””

“You arranged my disappearance.””

“I arranged a necessary inconvenience.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“You let everyone believe I was dead.””

“And you let your grandmother destroy my family.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Robert, enough.””

He turned toward her.

“You want the truth? Margaret never intended to give you anything. She used your daughter as a bargaining chip. She knew I would spend the rest of my life trying to get her back.””

Elena frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Robert opened a drawer and removed a thick envelope.

Inside were copies of old court orders.

One document was particularly disturbing.

It was an agreement signed by Margaret, Charles Whitmore, and Robert Bennett.

The agreement stated that Elena and Amelia would inherit different portions of the Sinclair estate.

But a handwritten amendment had been added later.

It transferred the majority of the estate to Elena if Amelia could not be located before her twenty-fifth birthday.

Elena looked at the date.

The amendment had been signed six years earlier.

The same year she married Harrison.

Robert smiled.

“Your grandmother was afraid that Amelia would come back. So she married you off to a man who could keep you distracted.””

Elena felt sick.

“Margaret arranged my marriage?””

Robert nodded.

“She knew Harrison was desperate for money. She believed he would keep you close while preventing you from investigating your birth.””

Richard interrupted.

“That makes no sense. Margaret's trust was supposed to protect Elena.””

Robert laughed.

“Protect her? She used her as bait.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“You're lying.””

“Am I?””

Robert removed another document.

It was a letter bearing Margaret's signature.

Harrison,

Elena must never discover the full details of her birth. If she does, Amelia will return, and the arrangement will collapse.

Keep her occupied. Keep her comfortable. And make sure she never gains independent control of the trust.

Elena stared at the letter.

Her grandmother had not simply hidden the truth.

She had planned to keep Elena inside a marriage designed to prevent her from discovering it.

But something about the letter bothered her.

The paper looked old.

The ink looked different from Margaret's other documents.

And the signature was too perfect.

“Richard,” Elena whispered.

He examined it.

Then he turned toward Robert.

“Where did you get this?””

Robert smiled.

“From the woman who wrote it.””

Elena froze.

“Margaret?””

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

He reached for his phone.

Then he called someone.

A moment later, the door opened.

Chloe entered.

She looked exhausted, but her expression was cold.

She held a small black box.

Robert smiled.

“Come here, Amelia.””

Chloe stopped.

Victoria stood motionless.

“My daughter…”

Chloe looked at her.

“Don't call me that.””

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“Please.””

Chloe turned toward Robert.

“Is it true?””

He nodded.

“Everything I told you was true.””

Chloe opened the black box.

Inside was a collection of documents and a small photograph.

She pulled out the photograph.

It showed Margaret Sinclair holding a newborn baby.

On the back was a handwritten name.

*Amelia Sinclair.*

Chloe stared at it.

Then she looked at Elena.

“So you're my sister?””

Elena nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Chloe laughed.

A broken, bitter sound.

“All these years, I thought you had stolen my life.””

Elena stepped forward.

“I didn't know.””

Chloe's eyes filled.

“You had everything. The mansion. The money.

The family. And I had to beg a man like Harrison to give me a future.””

“You were helping him destroy my life.””

“I thought I was getting back what belonged to me!””

Victoria reached for her.

Chloe stepped away.

“Don't touch me.””

Robert watched the exchange with satisfaction.

But Elena noticed something.

Chloe's hands were trembling.

She was holding the black box so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

“Chloe,” Elena said quietly.

“What is in that box?””

Chloe looked down.

Then she whispered:

“The original will.””

Richard moved closer.

“Give it to me.””

Chloe shook her head.

“Not yet.””

She looked directly at Elena.

“Because this will proves something none of you know.””

“What?””

Chloe removed the final document.

It bore Margaret's signature.

But beneath it was another name.

A name that made Robert Bennett suddenly stop smiling.

*The true controlling beneficiary of the Sinclair estate was not Elena.*

May you like

It was Victoria.

And according to the original will, the entire family fortune was supposed to pass to her.
